Members of the Nigerian national football team, Super Eagles, have mourned Nigerians who died during their semi-finals against South Africa on Wednesday at the ongoing African Cup of Nations.
In a video shared on the team's official Instagram page on Friday, the captain of the Super Eagles, Ahmed Musa, was seen leading the team to observe a minute silence in honour of those who died during the game while noting that the Super Eagles will lift the trophy for the deceased Nigerians on Sunday.
No less than five persons had died while watching the match between Super Eagles and Bafana Bafana of South Africa on Wednesday.
The team prayed that the souls of the departed “find eternal peace, forever remembered for their love of football and the togetherness it brings. Rest in peace.”
It could be recalled that a former member of the House of Representatives who represented the Ika Federal Constituency of Delta State, Dr Cairo Ojougboh, reportedly died while watching the AFCON semi-finals.
Also, a sales representative, Mikail Osundiji, said to be working with Nestle Plc reportedly slumped and died while watching the match in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
An Anambra State-born businessman, Chief Osondu Nwoye, from Amanuke, in Awka North Local Government Area, but a resident in Abidjan was also reported dead.
Others who reportedly died while watching the match include: Deputy Bursar of Kwara State University, Malete, Alhaji Ayuba Abdullahi; and a Nigerian graduate and corps member named Samuel.
They had all slumped and died following a heavy shock after the referee nullified Nigeria’s second goal against South Africa, put in the net by striker Victor Osimhen and awarded a penalty kick in favour of South Africa.

BREAKING: Fire Outbreak In Ibadan Community
There was a commotion on Monday afternoon at Ire Akari Estate Area of Soka, Ibadan, Oyo State as a furniture shop was gutted by fire.
The fire outbreak reportedly started around 3 pm.
Findings by our correspondent revealed that the fire emanated from a furniture shop. Efforts are ongoing by members of the community to prevent the spread of the fire. As of press time, the cause of the fire is still unknown.
Also, an X user, @rosheethat, posted a video of the fire while calling for help.
She posted, “Ire Akari Soka right now. Anybody that can help us.”

OIL THEFT: CHIEF OF DEFENCE STAFF INSPECTS ARRESTED MT. KALI, WARNS PERPETRATORS (VIDEO)
Chief of Defence Staff, Major General Christopher Musa, warned perpetrators of oil theft in Nigeria.
He made the warning on Monday, 15th of January, 2024, while speaking with newsmen in Oporoza river, as he inspects the vessel, MT. Kali, apprehended by Tantita Security Services.
However, Gen. Musa added that the arrested vessel will be destroyed in line with standard practice to serve as deterrent to others.

A video has surfaced online showing the aftermath of the United Nigeria aircraft that skidded off the runway on Friday night.
PEBNEWS can report that the aircraft overshot runway at about 7:35pm at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos.
'Look at what Jesus did for me, we escaped a plane crash," one of the passengers recounted.
"Na inside bush we dey. Emergency came for evacuation.
"The plane was stumbling in the air, but the pilot managed to calm down."
