Following a barrage of criticism unleashed on his government by concerned citizens on social media, Governor Dapo Abiodun has promised to fix 120 roads across 20 local government areas in Ogun State.
Over the years, Ogun residents have anguished as major roads across the state fell into disrepair. The development has seriously affected commuting for both commercial and private motorists.
Ogun shares multiple border communities with Lagos State, and while the latter can boast good connecting roads, the reverse is the case for the former.

*Ogun Bad Roads: Gbenga Daniel calls for state intervention*

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Navy and Senator representing Ogun East district, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, has called on state governments to assist the ongoing road infrastructure development of the Tinubu’s administration by intervening on numerous bad roads in their state, even if they are federal roads.

Daniel, who made this call at an interactive session with the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Abeokuta, charged governors to do more for the people as the power to develop each state is more concentrated on the state government than the federal government.

“I read the avalanche of comments on social media after the Ojude Oba festival and the criticism on the state of our roads not just in Ijebu but the entire state.

“To be fair to state governors, most of these roads are federal roads while some, like the inner town roads, are state roads. I want to speak on the federal roads for now.

“When I was governor, we created OGROMA to fix roads. Be it federal or state. The goal was to engage the professional but idle hands at the Ministry of Works. That is why we didn’t award any road contracts to foreign companies. The Sagamu-Abeokuta road is a federal road, but when we were to host the national sports festival, we decided to tar the road and not wait for the central government. That is how it should be.

“Governors are the custodians of their states, and we cannot continue to wait for the federal government alone while the people are suffering.”

Senator Daniel acknowledged that some states are not as financially buoyant as others, but the state government can make sacrifices for the love of the people they serve.

“I know our state governor is not a poor man. In fact, he is reported to be one of the richest Nigerians before he became governor. So with a 50 million naira donation from his pocket, most of these roads can be patched in the meantime using the equipment at the Ministry of Works.”

HID Tijani, Ojokoro LCDA Chairman, Embarks on Campaign to Eradicate Drug Abuse

The Executive Chairman of Ojokoro Local Council Development Area (LCDA) in Lagos,
Hon. Hammed Idowu D. Tijani (HID), has announced a sweeping initiative aimed at eradicating drug abuse within the constituency and its environs.

He said the campaign is a part of a broader effort to foster a healthier and more prosperous community by addressing the critical issue of drug abuse and the illicit use of drugs.

According to a statement issued by the council's Chief Press Secretary, Razaq Yekinni, "The campaign, spearheaded by the dynamic duo of Mrs. Funmilayo Olowoshoyo, Head of Department for Women and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA), and Hon. Tijani Modinat, Supervisor for WAPA, is designed to sensitize the populace about the dangers of drug abuse"

Yekini further stressed that, the campaign is aimed at informing residents about the risks associated with drug use and provide resources for those seeking help.

This, he further said, was achieved through series of educational programs, outreach activities, and community engagement efforts.

The CPS stated that the Oba of Ojokoro land,
HRM Oluwalambe Taiwo, was prominent in the initiative, adding that the royal father pledged his full support for the campaign, saying he is committed to collaborating with local law enforcement agencies, to ensure that "those who persist in drug abuse face the consequences of their actions".

"We will not stand by as our community is ravaged by the scourge of drug abuse," declared Oba Taiwo, adding that, "If individuals fail to heed the warnings and support provided by HID Tijani and his team, they will face arrest and prosecution".

A variety of activities have been outlined as part of campaign, designed to reach all segments of the community.

These include Community Workshops and Seminars; Informative sessions, to be led by health professionals and former addicts, to educate residents on the inherent dangers of drug abuse and the paths to recovery; Youth engagement programmes; and activities targeted at young people.

ALAKE PRESENTS GOLD BARS TO PRESIDENT TINUBU, SAYS SECTOR WILL BOOST NAIRA VALUE

Solid Minerals Development Minister, Dr. Dele Alake has commended President Bola Tinubu for supporting reforms in the solid minerals sector, assuring that the National Gold Purchase programme will increase the country’s reserve and boost the naira’s value.

Presenting the latest gold bar sourced from artisanal and small gold miners and refined by an agency of the Ministry, the Solid Minerals Development Fund (SMDF), to meet the London Bullion Market Association Good Delivery Standard recently, Alake said the refined gold would be sold to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to bolster foreign reserves.

Explaining to President Tinubu the significance of the event, Alake said it marked the first commercial transaction under the National Gold Purchase Program (NGPP), the centralised offtake scheme supported by a decentralised aggregation and production network of artisanal and small-scale miners and cooperatives.

21/06/2024

In 2017, Aaarti steel, a global steel maker from India, spent $20 million to $30 million to establish a 120,000-capacity cold-rolled mill in Ota, Ogun State, to serve Nigeria’s downstream players using the steel to produce home appliances, roofing sheets, metal furniture, filing cabinets, tables, and chairs, among others.

But the investment does not seem to matter much now as the steel company wants to exit Nigeria and has put its factory in Ota, Ogun State, for sale.

This will make it the sixth company to exit Nigeria in the first half of 2024 after Microsoft Nigeria, Total Energies Nigeria, PZ Cussons Nigeria PLC, Kimberly-Clark Nigeria, and Diageo PLC left the shores of Africa’s most populous nation.

The decision to exit the Nigerian space is based on issues ranging from a high rate of indebtedness, the challenging economy, Nigeria’s weakening currency, surging inflation at over 33 per cent and the mounting cost of energy.

The Ota, Ogun State-based steel maker, has already been put up for sale, and big players have submitted unconfirmed bids ranging between $50 million and $100 million.

African Industries and Bharti are bidding to buy the Indian-owned steel manufacturer for $50 million to $100 million.

The process is expected to be completed in a few months.

14/06/2024

Three suspected gangsters instrument to the proliferation of various fake Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) registration websites have been nabbed.

The all male suspects, Effa Leonard Mpama, Ibang Ernest Jerome and Eshiet Odotukana Benson, aged 34, 38 and 38 respectively, also
fakeed JAMB admission letters, perpetrated
forgery, system interference and schemes operating phishing websites to defraud unsuspecting JAMB candidates, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), through its spokesman, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, disclosed.

In a statement e-signed by Adejobi, he said the suspects intentionally and knowingly conspired and procured services that enabled them to illegally access JAMB restricted Central Admission Processing System (CAPS) and e-facility.

They, thereafter, altered and delete original JAMB's previous admission letters and inputted fake details, resulting in inauthentic admission letters, which were acted upon as genuine to secure admissions into tertiary institutions, as well as mobilization for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme.

All these, Adejobi said, "compromised
the entire JAMB admission process with its attendant consequences".

The suspects, whose arrests were effected by the NPF-NCCC, contravened sections 8, 13 and 27 of the Cybercrimes Act, 2015, as amended.

"Upon arrest the suspects revealed their various degrees of involvement in the conspiracy, corroborating the already available overwhelming evidences", the FPRO stated.

According to him, "The duo of Effa Leonard Mpama and Ibang Ernest Jerome, and others at large, collect personal details of prospective candidates and forward same to Mr. Eshiet Odotukana Benson, who gets CAPS links from Daniel and Chris. Messrs. Daniel and Chris, still at large, are working in the JAMB Computer Based Test (CBT) Centers, domiciled in FAN and UNICAL, respectively, in Calabar, Cross River State".

Continuing, the Force spokesman said, "In more developments, digital forensic analysis led to the recovery of four fake domains, website and two princ

BREAKING: World Bank approves Nigeria's $2.25 billion loan request

The World Bank has approved a total of $2.25 billion loan for Nigeria to help stabilise its economy following reforms and scale up support for the poor, it said in a statement on Thursday.

In April, Finance Minister Wale Edun said Nigeria was seeking up to $2.25 billion in World Bank loans and expects the bank's board to approve the request in June.

Nigeria President Bola Tinubu last year in May initiated the country's boldest reforms in decades, scrapping a popular but costly petrol subsidy and sharply devaluing the currency twice to try to kick-start growth.

But the moves stoked inflation and worsened a cost of living crisis.
With the devaluation, the International Monetary Fund forecast that fuel subsidies could cost up to 3% of GDP this year as the increases in pump prices have not kept up with their dollar cost.

Labour unions also have been pressuring Tinubu to roll back reforms.

The World Bank said it approved a $1.5 billion loan to back Nigeria's reforms and another $750 million to accelerate revenue mobilisation.

It added that Nigeria has embarked on critical reforms to address economic distortions and strengthen its fiscal outlook, saying that the country has taken "initial critical steps to restore macroeconomic stability, boost revenues, and create the conditions to reignite growth and poverty reduction have been taken."

The loan will support Nigeria's effort to raise non-oil revenues and promote fiscal sustainability, which will help the West African nation deliver quality public services, the World Bank said.
