History of Owerri

"This history of Owerri is base on our own investigation,so it may differ from yours"

Owerri was founded about the 14th century by a man regarded as founding father and his name is Ekwem Oha.
His mother's name was Arugo.
He fled from Umuori Village, Uratta in Owerri North Local Government Area of Imo State when his life was threatened by his younger brother Ndum. The threat to his life arose from the dispute over the sharing of the Funeral Cow slaughtered when their father Oha the aristocrat and embodiment of royalty died. The first son (Opara in Igbo) Ekwem was to provide the funeral cow as demanded by custom. He did not have the means to do so. He appealed to his younger brother Ndum popularly known as Ndumoha to buy the cow, which he did. Ndum asked for the head, heart and other parts of the cow that go to the first son in keeping with custom. His reason being that he Ndum, bought the funeral cow. Ekwem turned down his request and a quarrel ensued. The elders (Oha Uratta) were invited to settle the dispute. They did so by allowing tradition to prevail. Ekwem was'entitled to the aforementioned parts of the cow being the first son. Ndum did not take kindly to this and so planned to kill Ekwem in order to have his way. The plot leaked and Ekwem fled with his family at the dead of the night to Egbu a neighboring town (Community) taking with them some stores and domestic assistants.

History has it that his sister was married at Egbu. His sister fearing that Ndum may look for him asked him to continue his journey to an unknown and uninhabited land for safety and settle there permanently. They set out during the night with the aid of owa (native torch) and arrived at a hill top now known as Ugwu Ekwema and settled there. They heaved a sigh of relief saying OWERELA IHE MARAYA AKA meaning HE HAS TAKEN WHAT IS HIS RIGHT or what rightly belonged to him. He sounded the drum (as he was told by his sister) to indicate his location. His sister was happy to locate him and his family the following morning. She returned to Egbu thereafter.
The morning broke and they took their first meal roast old yam together in a typical communion fashion (not served) with thanks to Almighty and merciful Father our Lord God for their safety, the thick forest in the area being infested with dangerous animals such as lions, tigers and snakes like pythons, vipers and cobras.

THE NAME OWERRI (OWERE)

The advent of the British saw the anglicizing of Owere to Owerri but pronounced as though it was spelt Owere. All the neighboring towns (communities) of Owerri were founded and existed centuries or decades before Owerri came into existence.
British Colonial Government first made Owerri Divisional Headquarters later Provincial
Headquarters.

Court Document Shows Peter Obi Had No Hand In El-rufai's Arrest - Prnigeria - Politics - Nairaland
Nairaland Forum / Nairaland / General / Politics / Court Document Shows Peter Obi Had No Hand In El-rufai's Arrest -

A judgment of the Federal High Court, Awka division in Anambra State delivered on September 29, 2014 has revealed that former Anambra State Governor and currently Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi has no hand in the detention of Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai in 2013.

PRNigeria, in its traditional fact-check on trending issues, recently proves that the claim by Elrufai that Peter Obi as the Governor of Anambra State in 2013 ordered his detention is MISLEADING.

Contrary to the claim of the Kaduna State Governor, the Court’s judgment exclusively obtained by PRNigeria in a suit filed by El-Rufai on December 19, 2013, to challenge the breach of his fundamental rights as occasioned by his restriction to hotel premises, made no reference either directly or indirectly to Peter Obi in the 48 hours detention at Finotel hotel premises.

In fact, El-Rufai, throughout his claims in the court papers, was that operatives of the State Security Service (SSS) were solely responsible for the unlawful restrictions he suffered from November 15 to 16 while in Awka to observe a Gubernatorial election of 2013 on behalf of his party, the All Progressives Congress, (APC).

The judgment delivered by Hon Justice Bature Isah Gafai, showed clearly that El-Rufai directed his allegations against the SSS alone, hence, he did not join either Peter Obi or Anambra State Government as defendants in the suit marked FHC/AWK/CS/310/13.

In clear terms, the only two defendants in the suit are the SSS and the Attorney General of the Federation AGF as 1st and 2nd defendants respectfully, while AGF was made a defendant on account of being the Chief Law Officer of the Federation as well as for vicarious liabilities reasons.

PRNigeria noted clearly that Justice Bature Isah Gafai (now of the Appeal Court), in the 29-page judgment, never made even a veil reference or issued an order whatsoever, against Peter Obi and Anambra State since El-Rufai in all his depositions in the suit pointed no wrongdoings against Peter Obi in the detention saga.

Rather, Justice Gafai, now in the Court of Appeal, found SSS liable for the unlawful detention of the Kaduna State Governor and accordingly, imposed a fine of N2M on the security agency to be paid as damages to El-Rufai for the breach of his fundamental rights to personal liberty, freedom of movement, speech, and association.

The Judge also ordered the SSS only to tender an apology to El-Rufai in two national dailies, to wit; the Sun and Daily Trust newspapers, having been found liable for the act complained of by El-Rufai.

It is instructive that for the period of almost one year hearing in the case lasted and throughout the depositions of El-Rufai on oath, no mention or reference was made to Peter Obi or Anambra State Government as culprits in the unlawful restrictions at the Finotel hotel premises.

The SSS and AGF in their joint counter affidavit to El-Rufai’s claims of unlawful arrest and detention had asserted in defense, that the Kaduna State Governor who was classified as a “VIP” was accorded protective restrictions when he refused the request of its operatives to give him protective company.

Though Justice Gafai rejected the SSS assertions, the security agency had claimed to have an “intelligence report” that El-Rufai would be harmed and that it would be blamed for the failure to act to give him protection, hence, the deployment of its operatives to the hotel.

The security agency, specifically, claimed that it had no choice but to confine El-Rufai to the hotel premises because of his blunt refusal to allow its operatives to accompany him during the election monitoring.

PRNigeria‘s fact findings, as corroborated by the Federal High Court judgment further prove that El-Rufai’s allegations of unlawful detention against Mr Peter Obi, coming almost nine years a court held that the detention was done by SSS based on El-Rufai’s own evidence, is misleading.

Three Justices That Sat On Appeal Court Panel Transferred by valentineuwakwe(m): 9:05pm On Oct 23
The three justices of the Appeal Court that sat on the panel that dismissed the 15-count terrorism charge the Federal Government instituted against Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, have been moved from their various divisions.

Recall that the Appeal Court recently held that Kanu’s extradition from Kenya to Nigeria did not follow due process and was a flagrant violation of Nigeria’s extradition treaty and a breach of his fundamental human rights.

This was disclosed in a memo dated October 17, which was signed by the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem.

The memo emphasized that the new posting for the justices was with immediate effect and that they were expected to report to their new stations by October 21.

According to the memo, the presiding justice, Jummai Hanatu Sankey, who previously was in the Gombe Division of the court, has been transferred to Awka Division, whereas Justice Oludotun Adetope-Okojie who delivered the lead judgement, was moved to Owerri, while Justice Ebiowei Tobi, the third member of the court panel was transferred to Gombe.
