CBN denies selling FX to BDCs at N1,001/$1

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has described as false, reports that it is selling foreign exchange (FX) to bureau de change (BDC) operators at the rate of N1,001/$1.

The apex bank in a post on X on Thursday, said a circular claiming the apex bank announced the sale of $10,000 to BDCs at the rate of N1,001/$1 was “fake”.

The circular said that the BDCs are required to sell to eligible end users with a margin of no more than 1.5 percent above the buying cost.

“We write to inform you of the sale of $10,000 by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to BDCs at the rate of N1001/$1,” the circular reads.

“The BDCs are in turn to sell to eligible end users at a spread of NOT MORE THAN 1.5 percent above the purchase price.

“ALL eligible BDCs are therefore directed to commence payment of the Naira deposit to the underlisted CBN Naira Deposit Account Numbers from today Monday, April 17, 2024, and submit confirmation of payment with other necessary documentation for disbursement at the appropriate CBN branches.”

Ex-Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello

By
Okiki Adeduyite

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has declared a former governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, wanted for offences relating to economic and financial crimes.

This was contained in a notice posted on the commission’s official page on Thursday.

The notice read, “The public is hereby notified that Yahaya Adoza Bello (former Governor of Kogi State), whose photograph appears above is wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in connection with alleged case of Money Laundering to the tune of N80,246,470,089.88

“Bello, a 48-year-old Ebira man, is a native of Okenne Local Government of Kogi State.

“His last known address is: 9, Benghazi Street, Wuse Zone 4, Abuja.”

The notice asked anybody with useful information about the former governor’s whereabouts to contact any of the commission’s offices across the country.

The anti-graft commission had earlier stated that it would, on Thursday (today), arraign the former governor before a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja.

This was after the EFCC was granted a warrant of arrest by the Federal High Court in Abuja to apprehend the former governor.

The agency’s team of lawyers, led by Kemi Pinheiro, SAN, during the proceedings on Thursday, said that EFCC operatives were prepared to carry out the arrest warrant for the former governor, even if it requires the use of force.

“We have to arraign him in court even if we have to use the military. Immunity is only attached to a person and not the building.

“The law allows to break down walls to arrest an evading defendant. Section 284 says all persons are to obey the service of charge,” Pinheiro stated.

At Bello’s Abuja residence, on Wednesday, a group of armed men, identified as “Special Forces,” along with officers from the Nigeria Police Force, intervened to prevent the EFCC operatives from apprehending him.

PUNCH Online reports that the current governor of Kogi State, Usman Ododo, intervened to prevent the arrest of the former governor of the state by EFCC operatives.

Ododo’s team escorted Bello out of the location in the governor’s vehicle.

Bello and three other suspects, Ali Bello, Dauda Suliman, and Abdulsalam Hudu, will be arraigned before Justice Emeka Nwite.

They face 19 counts related to money laundering to the tune of N80,246,470,088.88.

Betta Edu, the suspended Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, has issued a stern warning to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), threatening legal action for alleged defamation.

In a letter signed by her counsel, Chikaosolu Ojukwu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Edu demanded a whopping $50 million in compensation from the renowned media organization.

The letter, directed to both BBC’s Abuja and London offices, accuses the BBC of disseminating false information regarding an ongoing Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) investigation, alleging that N30 billion was recovered from the suspended minister.

According to the lawyer, the BBC’s publication has inflicted immeasurable reputational damage, psychological trauma, and anguish upon Edu.

The letter criticizes the BBC for its article, asserting that it implies guilt on Edu’s part without affording her the presumption of innocence.

Furthermore, the letter lambasts the BBC for breaching journalistic fairness and due process by failing to provide Edu with an opportunity to respond to the allegations before publishing the article.

“For the avoidance of doubt, our client has neither been indicted nor found culpable of any act of financial impropriety in relation to her stewardship of the Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation Ministry in Nigeria.

“It is also pertinent to emphasize that neither N30 billion nor any amount whatsoever has been traced to or recovered from our client’s bank accounts nor has any proceeds of crime been traced or recovered from her to warrant the scurrilous article under reference.

“Suffice it to say that in the aftermath of the publication of this scandalous article (which the BBC caused to be disseminated to millions of persons across the globe), our client has been inundated by calls and messages from friends, associates expressing their shock and consternation.

“Our client has suffered immeasurable reputational damage, psychological trauma and anguish as a direct consequence of the publication and dissemination of the article,” parts of the letter read.

‘I’m a man,’ Bobrisky admits in court
12th April 2024

Kindly share this story:

Controversial crossdresser, Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, has admitted to being a male during his appearance at the Federal High Court in Lagos State, on Friday.

Justice Abimbola Awogboro sentenced him to six months imprisonment without the option of a fine for abusing the naira.

Before the sentence, the judge asked about his gender, and he quickly replied that he was a man.

When the judge asked, “Are you a man or a woman?” Bobrisky responded, “I am a man.”

Awogboro said the judgment would be a deterrent to others who are found abusing and mutilating the naira.

The judge ruled that the jail term commenced on March 24, 2024, the day of his arrest.

On April 5, the court had convicted Bobrisky after he pleaded guilty to the charge of abusing the naira filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

The judge therefore postponed the sentencing to Tuesday, April 9, 2024.

However, the day was declared a public holiday by the Federal Government for the Eid-el-Fitr celebration.

Bobrisky had last Friday, after his conviction, pleaded with the court to give him a lesser punishment as he was not aware of the law of abusing the naira.

In his allocutus, he begged the court that he was not aware of the law of abusing the naira.

He said that he is a social media influencer with over five million followers.

The judge then told him that ignorance of the law was not an excuse.

He said, “I know, My Lord. My Lord, I wish that you could give me a second chance to use my platform to inform and educate my followers about spraying money.

“I would do a video on my page, and I would educate people about spraying money.

” I will not repeat it, My Lord. I regret my actions, My Lord.”

“All these talks about Wizkid being proud will always be funny to me. 2014 I had my show in Lagos and I really needed Wizkid to perform and I was willing to pay him anything.

I contacted him and he told not to bother about paying him. He promised to come as a surprise guest & put up a show for free.

3 days to the event, Wizkid called me that he won’t be able to show up coz a very important family emergency had happened. I was really heartbroken but I just had to accept the reality. 35 minutes after that call, Wizkid asked me to contact any Nigerian artiste I will like to book for the event and get back to him with the bills. I quickly contacted Lil Kesh, Kcee, Yemi Alade and Phyno. The bill was about 40 Million Naira and Wizkid cleared it all. Mannn! I thought I was dreaming. Fuji Icon, K1 De Ultimate Set To Return To School At 67:

Wasiu Ayinde, often known as Kwam 1 or K1, a Fuji music icon, has voiced his wish to return to school despite dropping out years ago.

In a recent interview with journalists at his Mayegun Resort in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, the 67-year-old musician revealed his plans to enrol as an undergraduate at Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) in Ago-Iwoye, citing his love of learning as the driving force behind his decision.

Kwam 1 acknowledged that he had left school prematurely but said that he had already discussed his goals with the dean of the university’s music department.

Reflecting on his lifelong pursuit of knowledge, Kwam 1 remarked, “All my life I do research. Every opportunity that I have. Presently I am in school. As a matter of fact, I will soon be a fresher at Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU). I am just trying to do things in my own way to suit myself. You learn till you die.”

The music icon described a recent encounter at OOU, where he was extremely moved by a performance by the university’s music class in his honour.

Furthermore, Kwam 1 expressed his desire to use his influence and network in the music industry to bring together diverse talents and contribute to the progress of arts education.

“Very recently I had the opportunity to go and attend a function at the OOU. We had a mass set of graduands. The bands on the stand tried their hands on some of my works to recognise my presence. I was so overjoyous that time. So, in the form of wanting to appreciate them more, I sought to speak to the leader of the band and there I was told it was a band from the music class of OOU and they just started that class. I showed so much interest. I called for further discussion and in the cause of doing that I told them I want to enroll. I want to be part of them to see how we can develop a lot out of that.

“part of what I also discussed with the dean of the school of music at OOU was that we can do better. To bring a whole lot of artistes. The state is blessed with many names like Haruna Ishola, Ayuba, Shina Peters, Wizkid, Olamide, and D’banj. I told the dean that people like me can be used to bring everybody together and develop. That is what prompted me to want to go back to school.
“I am a school dropout… I know the value of education… will I say I have self-education? Any sane person will never criticise the beauty of education,” he said.

'No award was given to Bob; it was a stunt' - Eniola Ajao cries out amid backlash

Actress Eniola Ajao has cried out to Nigerians following the backlash generated by an action following the premiere of her latest movie.

Recall that the actress's movie premiere title, 'Beast of Two Worlds, stirred the internet after crossdresser Bobrisky was given the best-dressed female celebrity award at the event, which did not go well with some citizens.

Eniola, reacting to the backlash in a viral video trending on her TikTok live, denied Bobrisky got an award.

She pleaded with Nigerians to support her by going to the cinema to watch her movie, stressing that she would go bankrupt if her movie was cancelled.

Eniola said, “Tell everybody to go out for me; don’t let me be in debt; I don’t have anything. All I had was what I put into this project. Please support me in the name of God; I don’t come out to do clout or stunt. It’s because of this film, I was thinking of how I would sell the film. I'm so sorry.

"I don’t want to dwell too much on that; I plead with Nigerians, in the name of God, to help me go out. This is a film that the whole industry came out to watch, and they gave good reviews. It’s a film that I can be boastful about and walk with my head up.

"Help me out. It's a film that I can walk with my head so high. Please note that no award was given to Bob. It was all just stunt and I'm so sorry."

I welcome the news of the release of the Kuriga school children in Kaduna State. This reemphasizes the importance of collaboration between the federal government and states for expected outcomes, especially on matters of security.

The National Security Adviser, the Security Agencies, and the Kaduna State Government must be commended for the dispatch and diligence with which they handled this situation. It is clear that incipient urgency, meticulous attention, and tireless dedication are critical to optimal outcomes in cases of mass abductions.

I also welcome the release of pupils of a Tsangaya school in Sokoto State, and commend all the parties to the feat for their valiant effort.

I once again assure Nigerians that my administration is deploying detailed strategies to ensure that our schools remain safe sanctuaries of learning, not lairs for wanton abductions.

Wizkid, also known as Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, is a 33-year-old Nigerian singer and composer who has won multiple awards. Wizkid was born in Lagos, Nigeria. He is fortunate to have four children, each from three separate moms.

Wizkid has been widely criticized online after he posted a post lately claiming that he is not an Afrobeats musician and that fans of the genre shouldn't even bother downloading the next album.

The celebrated artist recently shared another message urging people to avoid ignorance. Additionally, he stated that he creates a wide variety of music genres, which he refers to as "fine music," and that he dislikes the term "Afrobeats." He also stated that being African does not need one to create Afrobeats. In addition, he noted that Made in Lagos, one of his most recent albums, is not an Afrobeat record and that Fela was the originator of Afrobeats; yet, he referred to the record as a synthesis of several sounds and labeled it genuine music.

“I’m Living Fine, I Will Never Beg Online For Anything, I’m Satisfied With What I Have”– Veteran Actor Ebenezer Odunsi Debunk Trending Video

Veteran actor Pa Olatunbosun Ebenezer Odunsi, fondly known as Baba Amoye, has addressed the recent viral video allegedly depicting him pleading for financial aid from fans.

Expressing sadness and disbelief, Baba Amoye clarified during a phone call that he was shocked by the video circulating online.

He claimed that journalists had selectively edited the footage to create a false narrative aimed at extorting money from his fans and friends.

Oreofewilliamsawojesu who called the veteran actor shared the video on his page.

Oreofewilliamsawojesu wrote: PLEASE DISREGARD BABA TUNBOSUN ODUNSI ‘S VIRAL VIDEO

Immediately after seeing the video, I knew that would never be him! So, I placed a call and the number was unavailable.
Then, I put a call to Otunba Ayobami Olabiyi, the General Secretary of TAMPAN, telling him that video MUST have been a clip from a main interview.

I was correct! As soon as I was able to access Baba, he lamented and was so unhappy. He said a so called journalist had come to interview him and asked him how he commands his tears on set. Then, Baba was asked to ‘act’. He did and the mischievous ‘journalist’ removed that part to deceive the good people of Nigeria.

I have known Baba Odunsi since 2007 when he took a lead role in my films ILEKUN GOMORRAH, AWO JESU etc. He has always been a blessed, comfortable and contented man. All his children are successful and some are abroad. At over 80, he is as strong as a fiddle and by privilege of Grace, he is a Preacher of the Word!

Yul Edochie denies marriage to Judy, says they are skitmakers

Controversial actor, Yul Edochie, has stated that he is not married to his ‘second wife’, Judy Austin.

He made this statement in response to a lawsuit filed against him by his ex-wife, May Edochie.

May Edochie accused her husband of adultery and filed for divorce.

Yul told the court that his connection with Judy Austin was all about skitmaking.

He stated that there is no legally recognized union between them.

In a report by Premium Times, May’s legal team, led by Emeka Ugwuonye of Due Process Advocates, said in a statement that the ongoing case at the FCT High Court in Abuja, scheduled for a hearing on March 5, suffered an unexpected setback when the court session did not proceed, which Yul and Judy claimed credit for.

Ugwuonye said Yul wrote in his petition, “That since the news of the birth of Star in June 2021, Gistlover, as a negative blog that thrives in fake and manipulated information for financial gains, has been negatively exploiting every movie or skit featuring me and Judy and generating social media traffic for financial gains.”

He added that May’s petition mentioned a supposed traditional marriage ceremony between Yul and Judy on April 24, 2022, in Anambra State.

However, Yul refuted the claim, accusing a blogsite of spreading fake information for financial gain.

*The abandoned 17-storey building – House of terror?

By Donald Arji & ADA ONWUNALI

RECENTLY, a security man, Moshood Afolabi, was found dead in a 17- storey building after he was declared missing by the family. Earlier, the family had reported his mysterious disappearance to a local vigilante group where he works at Oto-Awori local government development council after four days of waiting for him to return from his usual night watch.

The remains of Afolabi was found in the uncompleted and abandoned building in Oto-Awori after four days’ fruitless efforts by members of his family to locate his whereabouts. Crime Alert learnt that the leader of the vigilante group where he works had alerted both the police and other security agencies after which they started combing the area.

Their efforts paid off later when information got to the group that the body of Mr Moshood was found in an uncompleted building and they went to confirm the shocking discovery. His remains was taken to an undisclosed mortuary for further investigation.

Return from duty post

When Crime Alert visited the wife of the deceased, Raimot Afolabi, the mother of four narrated how she informed the vigilante group when her late husband didn’t return from his duty post. She lamented: “I went to report to Baba Saka who is the leader of the group my husband worked with that he had not returned home for two days after he went to his normal duty post. He was surprised but raised an alarm and ordered his boys to carry out a thorough search. His body was found in that 17-storey buidling. That monstrous house killed my husband.”

*The abandoned 17-storey building – House of terror?

When cornered, Saka, the leader of the vigilante group, told Crime Alert: “When the wife reported that her husband had not returned for two days, I commanded a search within the neighbourhood and on the second day, we received a call from an undisclosed person who told us that a body was found in the building. We quickly rushed to see if the body was that of a familiar person. When we got there, we recognized the body to be that of late Moshood. We then deposited his remains in a mortuary for further investigation.”

Investigations by Crime Alert revealed that the abandoned building has been a notorious hideout for criminals in the area. Residents of the area who pleaded not to be named for fear of their lives hinted that criminals normally share their loot inside the uncompleted building.

Some of them said that a lot of criminal activities had been happening in that building with boys of different shades and characters seen coming in and going out of the place. One of them said: “We have also been hearing gun shots from the place. It is amazing that security agents have not cared to raid the place and clean it up. It is a haven for armed robbers and ritualists.”

A community leader in the area, Alhaji Daura also told Crime Alert that the building has a very bad record in terms of crime. He said: “I remember when I came into Lagos for the first time, that was when members of Odu’a Peoples Congress, OPC, arrested people they suspected to be criminals.

An officer that was attached to the community police was found dead in that same building and also, just last week, a girl was thrown down naked after being r***d by some heartless men of the underworld. That place has been an hideout for criminals who steal and terrorize our community. They go in there to share the loot stolen from us.”

After smoking Indian H**p spirit told me to kill, murder suspect says
Incidentally, as a result of the notoriety of the building, the death of Afolabi there, elicited little or no sympathy as people in the neighbourhood went about their businesses as if nothing happened. Only the distraught wife was left to mourn the demise of the bread winner of their family. She said that she would be saddled with the onerous responsibility of catering for her growing children all alone.

Crime Alert gathered that both Oto-Aowri local government Council and good Samaritans who live in the community have been helping her to overcome her burden. Some members of the community used the opportunity to appeal to Police authorities in Lagos State to help them put a stop to the crime that has be giving them sleepless nights by creating more police stations because the only station there, Hausa Ilemba division, was not enough for a whole community like Awori.

Nigerians are seeing results of Tinubu’s FX policy, subsidy removal - Reno Omokri
NURUDEEN SHOTAYO
March 9, 2024 11:20 AM

Omokri noted that petrol importation has dropped by 50% since the removal of the subsidy.

Contrary to popular opinion, a former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, said President Bola Tinubu's decision to remove the petrol subsidy and reform the foreign exchange market has started yielding positive results.

Local Stop blaming Buhari, Tinubu for Nigeria's challenges - APC chieftain
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain commended Tinubu for ending the subsidy regime, which he said former President Muhammadu Buhari should have done instead of borrowing to pay over ₦400bn monthly for the scheme.

He made these known while speaking on Inside Sources with Laolu Akande, aired on Channels Television on Friday, March 8, 2024.

During his inauguration on May 29, 2023, the President announced that "subsidy is gone", and the pronouncement immediately triggered an astronomical increase in the fuel pump price from about ₦180 to over ₦600.

And coupled with the subsequent floating of the naira as part of the reforms in the financial sector, Nigerians are experiencing the worst food and hunger crises in over three decades.

As a result, protests have erupted in some parts of the country as citizens find living conditions increasingly unbearable.

However, Omokri said the current situation was inevitable due to rot inherited by the Tinubu government.

He also noted that all three major candidates in the 2023 presidential poll, including PDP's Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) — promised to remove the petrol subsidy.

“So, it amounts to intellectual dishonesty for anybody to begin to say Nigeria is collapsing. We are getting some wins right now.

“The naira has to be floated. We can’t afford multiple exchange rates.

“Fuel importation has reduced by more than 50%. That means the removal of fuel subsidy has worked. Local refining has also increased by 8%. So, we are actually seeing results,” he said.

Earlier, human rights activist and Labour Party sympathiser Dele Farotimi had claimed that the rule of law had collapsed in Nigeria.

Responding, Omokri said Nigeria remains a lawful country, adding that the Labour Party should accept its fate that it lost the 2023 presidential election.

“After the election, we have to come together and support Nigeria. Nigeria is moving forward right now, and we have to support Nigeria.

“That you did not win an election does not mean you should drag your country down.”

“There is rule of law in Nigeria,” said the Atiku campaigner.
