The Red Devils' forward scored a sizzling opener but was then wasteful and lost the ball in a crucial moment, leading to City sweeping United away

Marcus Rashford answered his critics with one swing of his right boot and then justified them for the rest of the derby as Manchester City overhauled his early strike to earn a crushing 3-1 win in Sunday's derby.Rashford scored a shock opener with a scorching strike which silenced the Etihad Stadium, as well as his many doubters, who he turned on last week in an article in the Player's Tribune. But United failed to build on the momentum and so did Rashford, who bungled two great chances to double their advantage.

United's ultra-defensive tactics got them through to half-time, but there was a huge sense of inevitability about City's victory once Phil Foden equalised. And that goal owed a lot to Rashford, who clumsily tried to win a foul against Kyle Walker but was instead dispossessed, and Foden showed no remorse.

City continued to dominate the game, but this time they had belief and United's early determination faded, with Foden scoring again before Erling Haaland made sure of the points. In truth, United never expected to win this game, but as the old adage goes, it's the hope that kills you, and there will be a big sense of frustration that they could not take advantage of their strong start.
Andre Onana (8/10):

Set up Rashford's goal with a laser punt forward and was excellent at shot-stopping, thwarting Rodri, Foden and Doku. Nothing he could do about Foden's first goal, but he could have got a stronger hand on his second strike.

Diogo Dalot (5/10):
Stuck mostly to defending due to United's tactics. Did a decent enough job, but had some sloppy passes too. Switched to left-back for final 20 minutes.

Jonny Evans (4/10):

Got a few good blocks in but when City kicked in to their usual gears he couldn't keep up. The first to be taken off.

Raphael Varane (6/10):

Stood tall and got himself in the way of plenty of shots and passes. Took a booking for fouling Haaland after he had escaped from Evans.

Victor Lindelof (5/10):
Struggled to cope with Foden and was pushed inside for the final 20 minutes.
Midfield
Kobbie Mainoo (6/10):

Did a good job of closing City's passing channels and recycling the ball to stave off the pressure.

Casemiro (5/10):

Helped contain City and crucially contained himself, avoiding a booking.

Scott McTominay (5/10):

Pulled out of a tackle in the first half which led to a clear City chance. Doesn't have the quality to make the difference in a game of this magnitude.
Attack
Alejandro Garnacho (5/10):

A big disappointment. Couldn't create any real danger.

Marcus Rashford (5/10):

Scored a rocket but then returned to his recent, disappointing version of himself. Bungled two good chances to score and crucially lost the ball before City equalised.

Bruno Fernandes (6/10):

Did well in the false nine role and his excellent hold-up play teed up Rashford. Worked hard and defended valiantly.

Kidnappers kill teenage girl abducted along with her mother and three siblings in Abuja after family failed to pay N60m ransom.

A secondary school student, Folorunsho Ariyo, who was kidnapped in the Dutse axis of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, has been killed by her abductors.

It was reported that gunmen invaded Sagwari Layout Estate in Dutse on Sunday, January 7, 2024, and kidnapped ten residents, including Miss Ariyo, her mother and three siblings.

It was gathered that Folorunsho and Nabeeeha Al-kadriyar’s remains were among four corpses of kidnapped victims dumped at Ida, near Ushafa in Bwari Area Council.

According to the Nigerian Tribune, the teenager was the daughter of Ekiti State-born Chief Legal Officer of the National University Commission (NUC).
Family sources told the publication that the kidnappers had demanded the sum of N60 million ransom to release members of the Ariyo family who could only raise about N5 million. “Talks were still ongoing and as of last Friday, we were optimistic of a positive outcome until we were contacted to pick up her body,” a family source said.

The teenage girl was buried on Sunday, January 14, 2024, in Dutse Cemetery, Abuja while the other members of the family remain with their abductors.

A HORROR drug made with human bones leaves people looking like “zombies” and kills dozens weekly.

The new drug, “Kush”, is sweeping the streets of Sierra Leone as dealers dig up graves to keep up with demand.Although illegal in the country, “Kush” is sold and smoked openly on the streets of the capital, Freetown.

The exact ingredients of the highly-addictive drug are a mystery, but opioids such as fentanyl are frequently found in joints.

The synthetic drug is also made from a mixture of herbs, toxic chemicals, disinfectant and disturbingly, human bones, the Daily Star reports.

The ground-up human bones contain traces of sulphur which enhance the drugs effect, according to one medical expert.

Dealers have turned into grave robbers, breaking into “thousands” of tombs to steal skeletons in order to keep up with the demand, locals say.

The joint, which costs 20p, is becoming increasingly popular among young people facing poverty at the lack of opportunities.

Many users will spend as much as £8 a day on the drug – which is a small fortune in a country with an average annual income of less than £400.

Kush has become a widespread problem, with whole neighbourhoods packed with drug users
The young people gather in their masses, sitting slumped with their heads lolling and sometimes sleeping standing up.

When high, “zombie” addicts have been known to walk into traffic or fall from high places.

Although there’s no official record on deaths related to the drug, health experts estimate that around a dozen users die weekly, with their bodies found in slums, the Telegraph reports.

Embraced by euphoria, the youngsters are turning to kush to “escape the harsh realities of life” in a West African nation ranked among the world’s poorest.

To make matters worse, Sierra Leone has one of the highest youth unemployment rates which stands at 60 per cent of the hospital’s admissions are “kush” related.

More and more people are referred daily, with many of them sedated upon arrival because of their violent tendencies.

“We have already recorded nearly 2,000 cases of kush addicts in 2023 at the hospital. Many are dying in homes and on the streets,” said Dr Mattia.

To help patients wean themselves off of their addiction, care consists of isolation treatment for three to six weeks, backed by anti-psychotic medications.

They can have psychotherapy and join socialising activities such as sport and sewing.

Michael Manna, 22, is a student whose life has been turned around after years of addiction.
He said: “I was the bad Michael, not the good Michael that I am now.

“I felt like I was in another world, different from this one.

“Abstain from kush’, it’s the best advice I have.”

But the facility’s resources are limited, and many patients relapse without a follow-up treatment.

In fact, the World Health Organisation estimates that there are just five psychiatrists in the entire nation, which is home to some 8.4 million people.

The hospital can only treat “the tip of an iceberg,” Dr Mattia said.

“It’s a very big and widespread problem.”

And this problem has spilled over to the neighbouring Liberia and Guinea, with an estimated more than one million people addicted across the entire region.

According to him, he was shocked to discover that his 26-year-old son had a will, when he in his 60s doesn’t.
Mohbad’s father has expressed shock after finding out that his son left a will at the age of 26.

According to him, even at his own age, he has no will.

He added that he suspects foul play because the will was thumb printed Instead of signed.

He made the revelation during an interview with TVC News.

He also ecounted how he found his son’s body already locally embalmed when he got to his place.

He wondered why he should use a thumb print when he has his signature.

Reactions have followed:

gyftfrancis said: “You get property, wey you won dey write will?”

pava_turk stated; “Jossy sabi talk sha!!! So he wants all that belongs to his son, then what happens to Liam?”

hameedahadayi commented: “This man is raising alot of valid issues, but emotions no allow us see front. His issues are valid. Why was Mohbad’s will thumbprinted and not signed. Why will a young boy write a will!!!”

being_mrs_babs said; “More concerned about properties than his son’s death”

taurus1725 alleged: “No One thing i know was that Moh was killed, his death wasn’t natural, every one that waswith him 48hrs to his death are all guilty,..why will he thumb print his will when he can sign?”

NIN: NIMC says Nigerians must now provide NPC certificate to modify date of birth
The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has said that Nigerians applying to change their date of birth on the National Identification Number (NIN) database will now be required to provide an electronic civil registration and vital statistics system (e-CRVS) certificate from the National Population Commission (NPC).

The Commission stated this in new guidelines for date of birth change it released on Sunday via its X handle. In addition to the certificate, NIMC said copies of other valid documents such as identification and application letter for modification will now be addressed to the DG/CEO, NIMC.

Before now, only an affidavit and the payment of N15,000 are required for the modification of age and other modifications on the NIN system.

According to the Commission, with the new guidelines, date of birth modification can only be done once in a lifetime and only at NIMC enrolment centres. It warned that its licensed agents are not allowed to do date of birth modification and other forms of modification.

Applicants express concerns
Meanwhile, some Nigerians seeking to modify their date of birth on the NIN database have expressed concern that the new guideline would further extend the delay in getting the modification done at NIMC.
There have also been allegations of extortions and intentional delays at the NIMC centres.

However, the new Director-General, Engineer Abisoye Coker-Odusote, said she was working to end all forms of unethical practices within the Commission. She also recently announced that the Commission has cleared over 2.5 million backlog of modifications to NIN.
The e-CRVS
President Bola Tinubu last month launched the e-CRVS of the NPC, a platform that digitalizes all civil documentation such as birth and stillbirth registration, birth attestation, adoption, marriage notification, divorce notification, migration, and death.

According to the Chairman of the NPC, Nasir Kwarra the e-CRVS was part of Nigeria’s way of complying with the resolutions of the African Ministers Conference held in 2022 and scaling up the automated process in Nigeria.
He added that the system provides a digital certificate in all cases, an accessible verification platform to registered organizations, and has a central management system (dashboard) that depicts and analyses collated civil registrations into vital statistics for proper decision-making.”
The chairman said that the process marked a complete departure from traditional paper-based recording of vital events to a state-of-the-art digital solution that conforms to international best practices.
He added that the eCRVS system would revolutionize how vital events were recorded, tracked, and analyzed in the country.

Reason why you struggle to meet deadline and what to do about it
You are not alone if you find deadlines very daunting and are always struggling to meet the most-dreaded due dates. Every professional's reputation depends on a lot of things including how efficiently he meets his deadlines, the quality of his work, his team spirit etc. A person might be a very good team member and have a lot of skills but if he fails to deliver on time, or misses the deadline to complete a project, he would never be counted as a reliable employee, right?

What makes a person miss deadlines?
Doing a good job is as important as completing the job on time. Deadlines are not only critical for time management but are very important to help an employee meet his goals. Deadlines motivate teams to work hard and together while encouraging them to become more productive. Sadly, not everyone can manage their time as efficiently as they should, which makes meeting deadlines a daunting struggle for many. Besides poor management of time, there are other reasons that can hold a person back from completing a project or assigned task on time. Arbitrary deadlines, multiple projects, low workforce are some of the reasons that might make a professional miss a deadline. However, a client or a manager might not care for the reason for missing a deadline because all they are concerned about is the completion of work on due time. So, here are a few tips that would help you meet a deadline and complete your work on time.

Make a list of all that you need to do
One of the main culprits that make a person miss a deadline is lack of planning. Most employees or professionals handle multiple projects, which means they have multiple deadlines to chase; some might be long-term deadlines while others might be short-term ones. What is important for that person to know is what's there in his plate because when an employee is overworked and need to multitask, his chances of missing a deadline increases. There is one simple tip that that can be very helpful—start the day by writing down what needs to be completed that day. Similarly, another list should be maintained for deadlines that need to be met in due course of time but not daily. This helps a person to organise his workload and keep in mind about the pending due dates.

Estimate the time needed to complete different deadlines
After making careful lists of what needs to be done, the next thing one can do is to estimate the time required to complete deadlines of different projects or tasks. And accordingly, divide the time that should be invested to complete each project on time. This is a simple lesson on time management. There are many apps that can be used to make to-do lists and estimate the time required to complete the task. Setting regular reminders can be a big help to stick to the schedule.

Prioritize your to-do-list
After making a to-do-list and estimating the time needed to complete the projects on time, the next thing that should be addressed is what needs to be done when, which means prioritizing the work. Everyone has his way to prioritizing things, so find what works for you and act accordingly. Some like to tackle the difficult targets first, thereby keeping the easier ones for last. Others might first do what's easy and then move on to the difficult targets. It's important to find your strength and act accordingly.

Don't forget to reward yourself from time to time
To keep yourself motivated, you should learn how to reward yourself for doing a good job and sticking to the routine. But the big question that you might be tempted to ask at this point is when to reward yourself, right? This is where the concept of milestones come into play. For every project that you have on your plate, break it down into smaller milestones. For example, if you are given the responsibility to edit a 12-chapter book in four months, set a milestone for sets of three chapters in 25 days, the remaining 5 days can be used as a buffer period. When you complete one milestone, reward yourself for your achievement!

If the deadline is arbitrary or impossible, bring it other's notice
If the deadline looks impossible even after assigning the tasks and scheduling it according to time that can be possibly invested, you should bring it to the notice of your manager/boss or the client. If they agree that it really is very daunting and can be quite impossible to meet, then you can negotiate for time or more manpower to be included in completing the task. In case, the manager does not agree with what you proposed, then you can always ask for his advice and help. Discussing such matters at the beginning itself is very important than to raise the alarm at the eleventh hour.

24/12/2023

Manchester United’s travelling supporters filed out of the London Stadium in their hundreds with more than 10 minutes remaining and who could blame them? The bigger puzzle is why they keep turning up for the dross they are being served up.

Those United fans who stayed witnessed another miserable 90 minutes in which their team failed to score for the fourth successive game. Summer signing Rasmus Hojlund is yet to hit the back of the net or register an assist in the Premier League.

This was United’s 13th defeat of the season in all competitions, which is the most they have registered before Christmas day since 1930, and it is hard to find any positives for manager Erik ten Hag.

The most depressing thing for those who follow United is that it was all so predictable. West Ham United did not even have to play particularly well and once the home side scored there was only ever going to be one winner.

These are dark days indeed for the Manchester club, whose former manager David Moyes saw his team bounce back from the League Cup thrashing by Liverpool – albeit with some help from the visitors.

Goalkeeper André Onana allowed Jarrod Bowen a second bite at the cherry for his goal, while teenager Kobbie Mainoo’s mistake was taken advantage of by Mohammed Kudus.

Mainoo was one of three teenagers named in United’s patched up starting line-up, which included debutant defender Will Kambwala, and it was hard on the 18-year-old to find himself at fault for the Kudus goal.

Bowen has now scored 11 league goals for West Ham this season and what United would give for a striker in his form. Their £72 million signing Hojlund got nowhere near breaking his domestic duck and his replacement, Marcus Rashford, was not much better.

United have not scored a goal for more than six hours and have netted only 18 goals in their 19 league games so far this season. Their goal difference of minus five is embarrassing, so no wonder the home crowd taunted Ten Hag with chants of ‘you’re getting sacked in the morning’.

If only it were that easy for the Old Trafford club, who are still waiting to confirm Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s investment and whose problems stretch much further than the man in the dug-out.

United captain Bruno Fernandes returned from suspension and earned a yellow card for dissent, which was his most telling impact during an uninspired performance from the Portuguese who spends most games blaming everybody but himself.

Ten Hag would have been relatively happy with the sleepy first half in which United were the slightly better team and saw Alejandro Garnacho miss a decent opportunity after being given a sight of goal by Antony.

But Hojlund was again a long way off the pace and did not threaten the West Ham goal. Part of that was down to a lack of service, but when one cross was fizzed low across the six-yard box, the Dane was too slow to react.

By the time West Ham took the lead, Hojlund had been replaced by Rashford, who was sporting a new copper hair colour but did not get close to adding to his two league goals this season.

Bowen, on the other hand, cannot stop scoring for West Ham and it was thanks to a smart tactical tweak from Moyes that he managed to break the deadlock.
United had dealt comfortably with West Ham’s attack during the first half, but Moyes decided to move Lucas Paqueta into the middle as a false nine and send Bowen out to the flanks after the break.

It was from a Paqueta ball over the top of the United defence that Bowen opened the scoring in the 72nd minute. Onana was given one opportunity to stop the forward but gave him a second chance from close range to net his third goal in three games.

“The best part of our performance was probably later on when we put Paqueta up front,” said Moyes. “We put Jarrod out wide and he got his goal from there. I want the boys to be flexible. Mo [Kudus] can play up front as well and they’re beginning to understand that we can interchange them and move them around.

“When Paqueta went centre forward, he held the ball up brilliantly well, brought people into the game and got Jarrod in. I think Jarrod wants to score now, he always wants to get in to score. The ball was an incredible ball from Paqueta, the first shot was half saved and he still finds a way of getting it into the net. Really good.”

One goal would have no doubt been enough for West Ham to beat this toothless United, but the home team put the result beyond doubt six minutes later. Mainoo failed to control a pass out of defence from Jonny Evans and Kudus took the ball before rifling a shot past Onana.

That was the cue for United’s supporters to start heading for the exits and there was barely anybody left in the away end when United’s players sheepishly went over to clap their fans following yet another defeat

The Central Bank of Nigeria has issued a new directive to all banks, other financial institutions, and non-bank financial institutions, suspending the processing charges previously imposed on large cash deposits.

This change, referenced under the “Guide to Charges by Banks, Other Financial Institutions, and Non-Bank Financial Institutions” dated December 20, 2019 (FPR/DIR/GEN/CIR/07/042), affects deposits over N500,000 for individual accounts and N3,000,000 for corporate accounts.

Previously, these deposits attracted processing fees of 2% and 3%, respectively.

Effective immediately, the CBN has put a hold on these charges.

This suspension is a significant shift in policy and will remain in effect until the end of April 2024. The move is seen as a response to the evolving financial landscape and the needs of depositors across Nigeria.
The directive mandates all financial institutions regulated by the CBN to comply by not imposing any charges on cash deposits that meet or exceed these thresholds.
This development is expected to encourage more significant cash deposits, enhance liquidity, and possibly impact various sectors positively, including small and large businesses.

Recall in 2019 the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) announced that it would begin to charge bank customers making cash deposits and withdrawals from today, September 19, 2019. In a circular made available to the public, the apex bank disclosed that the new policy of transaction fees was designed reduce cash in use.

The charges, according to the Central Bank, would attract3% processing fees for withdrawals and 2% processing fees for lodgments of amounts above N500,000 for individual accounts.

CBN also made known that for corporate accounts, the Deposits Money Banks (DMBs) would charge 5% processing fees for withdrawals and 3% processing fees for lodgments of amounts above N3,000,000.

Also, just over a year ago, the CBN announced a new policy that mandates deposit money banks and other financial institutions to ensure that over-the-counter cash withdrawals by individuals and corporate entities do not exceed N100,000 and N500,000, respectively, per week.

The revised cash withdrawal limits, contained in a circular issued today by the apex bank and seen by Nairametrics, will take effect nationwide on January 9, 2023.
After the policy takes effect, all cash withdrawals above the stated limits will attract processing fees of 5% and 10%, respectively.
The new policy came barely weeks after President Muhammadu Buhari launched the newly redesigned N200, N500, and N1000 banknotes. The naira redesign policy has now been cancelled and banks are now expected to accept both the old and new notes.

Happy New month
Society teaches us to value the welfare of others over our own. And this is often the reason why we feel conflicted when faced with a choice between helping others and helping ourselves. In the end, we usually choose other people. We enjoy the feeling of being magnanimous and charitable when we help others. It provides us with a sense of fulfillment. Giving to others makes us feel that life is meaningful.

But sometimes we go too far. Even when we have nothing left to give, we still do. We forget ourselves. We exchange our priorities, our plans and our ambitions for those of others. We fail to set limits and sacrifice too much for other people. As a result, whatever time, money or energy that is meant for ourselves we give to those around us.

Do we really become fulfilled when we do this? Or are we just avoiding the feeling of guilt that arises when we don’t give? Is this so-called meaningfulness that we experience merely an excuse, a rationalization? When we give beyond what we should, is this really helping? Or are we in fact encouraging dependence on us?

When faced with a choice between ourselves and others, sometimes we should choose ourselves also. It’s not selfishness to do this. Because when we sacrifice too much, we are prioritizing others at our own expense.

We should find time do what we enjoy. We ought to develop our potentials and be all that we can be. And we need to stay healthy in every aspect of life. The only real way we can be of any good to the people around us is by taking care of ourselves first. Only when we are complete, whole and happy can we be of greater help to those who truly need us.

To choose yourself means living life at your own pace. When someone tells you, you’re too young, too old, or you two are at different stages of life, don’t disagree with them. Don’t defend yourself. Let them have their judgment. Maybe, really, you’re too young or too old or will never seem right for them. It’s okay because everyone has their own perspective. Accept their perspective and understand that it doesn’t change anything about you inherently as a person. You’re still a whole entity, not too little, not too much, just what it is, right where you’re supposed to be right now. Choose yourself means respecting the stage you’re at in life and making decisions based on your own perspective of what’s good or bad, who’s young or old FOR YOU, not forcing yourself to fit with others.

To choose yourself means focusing on your own happiness and navigating towards what adds positivity to your life without hesitance. Ask yourself what your needs and wants are, and commit to fulfilling them. Make it a priority to keep yourself happy and clear your headspace of anything that doesn’t. When you know what will serve your benefits in the long-term even though doing it will be hard at first, just do it. Push yourself through it anyway. Train yourself to do the harder yet better things and let go of anyone or anything that constantly brings you more sorrow than happiness. It doesn’t matter if that anyone or anything is your bestfriend, your 10-year relationship, your dream, or even your family. Your life starts with you and it can’t continue without you — you must take care of yourself.

To choose yourself means drawing your own boundaries and sticking to them at all times. It means standing up for yourself and refusing to negotiate what’s important to you and for your happiness. It means overcoming the fear of confrontation to call out disrespectful behaviours while honouring your unique way of being. Don’t let others dictate what’s okay and normal for you but speak up and step back decidedly when your values are compromised. Acknowledge your thoughts and feelings. Give them the care and respect they deserve and express them to others with confidence and self-compassion. Sometimes this might lead to conflict or disapproval or rejection, but don’t you be afraid. Once you choose yourself and do what’s right for you, the universe will learn how to what’s right for you too and those who don’t will easily be filtered.

To choose yourself means building a life that works best for you. It means believing in your ability when no one else does and embracing every fiber of who you are — even the bits that are ever called too much or not enough. Feel whole no matter how undone you might be in anyone’s eyes. Claim your space. Know you’re enough, more than enough. Even when the whole world says no to you, you keep saying yes to yourself and marching forward. To choose yourself is to break through the limits others put on you and decide for yourself when is enough. Your life is lived by your rules. And your rules are meant to work for you, not against you. Create a world in which you feel true to your core, you feel loved, you feel important, you feel worthy, you feel comfortable, and you feel safe. Choose yourself and keep choosing yourself, the rest will sort itself out.
Happy New month.
