The United Nations Development Program ( UNDP), is to partner the state Ministry of Youth Development to empower thousands of young people from Anambra State through the UNDP sponsored SME start-up/expansion project.

Speaking on the programme, the UNDP Team Lead, Mrs. Joycee Oburu stated that the ultimate goal of the project is to enhance the youths with Business Startup/expansion plans not just to compete in the state but in the country and globally.

According to her, the business financing programme will involve disbursement of a grant of ₦100,000 to 10,000 SMEs and will also incorporate mentorship and coaching of the SMEs for higher productivity.

She also stated that apart from undergoing training and mentorship to ensure that they maximize the grants for business growth, they will also be exposed to the international market.

Mrs.Oburu who noted that they decided to identify with the Ministry of Youth Development because 65% of the SMEs are associated with the youths, requested for the support of the ministry for the success of the project.

Responding, the Commissioner for Youth Development, Mr Patrick Agha Mba welcomed the UNDP Team and also thanked Governor Chukwuma Soludo for creating the right environment that is conducive for reputable agencies like UNDP to work in Anambra State through his integrity and credibility in management of resources.

He said that the target of Mr. Governor as captured in his manifesto is raising 1000 youth millionaires and creating 130 private sector jobs annually in Anambra State, stressing that the governor is very intentional in attracting investors in the state by building of massive roads infrastructure and creating enabling environment to ensure that the private sector thrives in the state.

He further stated that this is the first time in the history of the state, a youth was appointed to lead the Ministry of Youth Development, which is an indication that Governor Chukwuma Soludo is determined to change the narratives and move youth development to the next level.

The commissioner also explained that since assumption of office, the Ministry of Youth Development has set the motion for strategic partnership with relevant agencies like UNICEF, NASME, SMEDAN and ITF in order to ensure that policy formulation and implementation for youth development is properly articulated and executed.

He enumerated the key programmes of the ministry as 1 Youth 2 Skills Solution, Solution Job-KikstartInitiative and the soon to commence skill training programme for those at the primary and secondary school levels, describing the 1 Youth 2 Skills Solution as a total deviation from the usual youth empowerment programmes of the government to more impactful and sustainable programmes.

Mr Agha Mba emphasised that the 1 Youth 2 Skills Solution is purely a community base programme designed to incorporate five very important stages-- Apprenticeship/Vocational Skills Training Scheme, Entrepreneurship Scheme, Cooperative Formation, Business Financing Scheme and One Year Mentorship Scheme.

He also explained that in the second phase of 1 Youth 2 Skills Solution, 10,000 youths will be empowered, which is an improvement on the 5000 youths who were empowered in the Pilot Phase with vocational and entrepreneurship skills in addition to a sum of N2 billion spent in business financing scheme for start-up/expansion.

The commissioner maintained that 75% of the businesses funded under the Pilot Phase of the programmes are already showing signs of success based on impact assessment conducted by the ministry and other programme evaluation agencies.

He also stated that 1 Youth 2 Skills had been adopted the federal government as a result of the successes recorded and that preliminary discussions had been held between the state and the federal government for possible partnership.

The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr. Martin Agbili, while appreciating the UNDP team for coming, stated that the major programme of Mr. Governor in the Ministry of Youth Development is to see how the ministry can develop the youths and enhance their potentials.

Anambra State Government Dissociates Self From HOSCON Activities

By Ebele Eze

Anambra State Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources has disassociated self from the activities of one illegal group called, Host Communities of Nigeria, HOSCON.

The group whose illegal activities went viral after their office was recently bursted and arrests made by the Ministry of Women and Social Welfare for duping Anambra women of over N800, 00o has one Joy Nneka Igboka, as their leader.

Condemning in its entirety, the illegal existence of HOSCON during a press briefing in his office at the Jerome Udoji State Secretariat Awka, the Commissioner for Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Barrister Anthony Ifeanya recalled a public service announcement his ministry sponsored in August 2022 where inhabitants of the state were strongly warned against extortion or embezzlement from any group.

According to Barrister Ifeanya, the announcement became pertinent when his attention was drawn to the activities of some group of persons operating under the name of Host Communities of Anambra State, who embarked on statewide campaign, registering communities and council areas in the state into committees and sub- committees for the purposes of collection and or payment of three percent of money from oil companies or as 13% derivation fund to the state.

Quoting the Petroleum Industrial Act, Commissioner Ifeanya made it clear in the announcement that host communities are those towns in whose soil or land oil companies are operating their business and not Anambra State as a whole, hence the ministry was not aware of the said collection of money and registration of names across the state.

Recalling his encounter with the suspect, Joy Igboka, during her visit to his office in company of some of their stakeholders and alleged Executive national chairman, Barrister Ifeanya, who expressed profound joy that nemesis has caught up with them while defrauding Anambra Women in the name of getting them employed as cooks in the school feeding programme, noted that he sternly warned them to retrace their steps from fraudulent and illegal acts.

Commissioner Ifeanyi while calling for investigation and the full weight of the law to be meted out on them, strongly affirmed that his ministry has nothing to do with them as they are a faceless group, which has been warned severally to retrace their steps.

ARTMA REPORT

Wednesday, 8th May 2024

Officers of ARTMA & OCHA BRIGADE were dispatched in numbers on a joint enforcement to sensitize road users/public transporters to be of good conduct, obey traffic rules/signs, refrain from trading on the road & carelessly littering the environment.

The joint enforcement was led by the two(2) Managing Directors, Engr Okonkwo Emeka-Konti and Hon Celestine Anere.

We visited the toll gate to tarzan section of the Awka- Onitsha expressway where truck drivers have turned the roads to mechanic workshops despite the NO PARKING signs installed.

The team moved to Onitsha Bridge head to impound the stubborn commercial drivers who, despite all our appeals, still load by the bridge head instead of allocated parks.

Finally, we visited OCHANJA to ensure nobody trades on the street, and no commercial vehicle operates within 50 meters of the roundabout. Despite all our previous sensitization, some non challant traders had their good confiscated and vehicles impounded.

We must, in our own way, contribute to the rebuilding of our beloved state by doing the right thing always

WHISPERS AND WHISTLES.

Ụmụnnem, in line with Mr Governor's Manifesto on Environment and our local government's commitment to a clean, green, and healthy Anambra East, which is contained in our Solution Integrated Community Development Plan, (SOLUTION - ICDP) we've intestified efforts in our ongoing desilting project across our communities. Many of these drainage systems haven't been touched in over the years... that's a long time for leaves, debris, and who-knows-what-else to build up! This project will ensure rainwater flows freely, preventing flooding and keeping our streets safer.

I recently took a firsthand look at the progress myself. Seeing the work happening and knowing the positive impact it will have on our everyday lives fills me with pride. But here's the thing... a clean Anambra East takes all of us! ️

While we're desilting the drains, let's all commit to keeping them clear. Avoid throwing litter in the streets, and if you see something that could block the flow, let the council know. Together, we can make a real difference.

This project is just one step towards a cleaner, greener Anambra East. We have got big plans for the future, and with your support, we can make them a reality.

A big Thank you to Mr Governor, for his continued support! We won't let him down.

It is morning yet and we will do the most in the discharge of our responsibilities.

Anambra Environment Delegation Attends Nigeria Plastic Solution Activity Project Inception Launch in Lagos

---As USAID, Coca-Cola Foundation and Technoserve Sets to Advance Anambra Plastic Recycling Sector to Attain Zero Plastic Waste Phase

By Clara Omuluzua Madubike

Anambra State Environment delegation which comprises of Mr Commissioner for Environment Engr Dr. Felix Odimegwu and M.D ASWAMA Hon. Mike Ozoemena attended the Nigeria plastic solution Activity project launch held Yesterday Monday 6th May 2024 at Landmark conference center VI, Lagos State.

The programme led by technoserve Nigeria in collaboration with CBF is a 24-months initiative which will be funded by USAID and Cocacola foundation with the goal of reducing plastic waste in Anambra and Lagos state

In her opening speech, Melissa Jones, Mission Director, U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), Nigeria says the newly launched Nigeria Plastic Solutions Initiative will create 10,000 jobs and generate $4.8 million in income. This initiative seeks to tackle the critical challenge of plastic waste management in Nigeria through innovative recycling solutions.

"Anambra and Lagos states represent a country the size of Cameroon. Both states together represent the force of Nigeria. Anambra state is the Lagos of the South East"

According to her, Nigeria is the ninth highest contributor to plastic pollution, with about 2.5 million tonnes of plastic waste annually, over 88 percent of which is not recycled. She said that the goal of the activity was to recycle 49,000 metric tons of plastic waste produced in Lagos and Anambra states over the next two years. She added that by recycling plastics, the environment will be safeguarded and become pathways to economic empowerment for underemployed Nigerians

Jones added that asides improving the environment, plastic collection, sorting, aggregating, processing and manufacturing offers employment opportunities. Small, medium scale enterprises, entry-level and semi-skilled workers particularly stand to benefit from this new value chain.

She noted that USAID would provide an enabling environment to improve the competitiveness, sustainability, and profitability of numerous collectors, aggregators and recyclers.

General Manager, Coca-Cola Nigeria Ltd, Mariam Khan said her company remained committed to creating shared opportunities and making a difference in communities. She noted that the initiative was not just about cleaning up but also about positively impacting lives and creating jobs.

Furthermore, Adesuwa Akinboro Country Director, Nigeria, TechnoServe said the activity aims to reduce plastic waste in Lagos and Anambra states by at least 49,000 metric tons, through inclusive, market-driven interventions along the value chain.

According to her, a fundamental aspect of the approach is the emphasis on developing market systems to drive the circular economy. We recognise the complexities within the plastic waste recycling value chain and are committed to addressing these challenges through innovative solutions that will enable sustainable practices and create inclusive job opportunities" she noted

Continuing, Anambra Environment Commissioner Dr Odimegwu stated that the initiative is a welcome development that will not only reduce plastics waste but will create jobs, generate income, improve air, water and soil quality

Odimegwu opined that it takes plastics bottles (PET) over 400 years to decompose, these plastic waste goes into our landfills, clogs our waterways, mars our landscapes, threatens public health, kills thousands of marine animals, and releases toxins into the environment, thereby leading to plastic pollution/crisis"

He stated that Prof Charles Chukwuma Soludo led administration prioritizes the Environment and health of the citizen, and through the Ministry of Environment in conjunction with ASWRA has held many programmes to help curb plastic waste e.g Plastic sustainability summit and All Anambra Plastic Pick up challenge which ran for 3 months with10,000 tonnes of plastic waste mopped from waterways, streets, markets, homes, malls, public and private places from179 communities in the state

This initiative will set Anambra plastic recycling sector to a paradigm shift which will help us attain the zero plastic waste phase. Just like the theme of the launch which reads“Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Building a Sustainable Future". We will surely harness this initiative to our advantage to create a clean, green, liveable, healthy and sustainable Environment not only for Ndi Anambra residents but for the world at large

Lagos State Commissioner for Environment Mr Tokunbo Phillip Wahab, US Consulate Kenise Hill, President, SWEEP Foundation Amb Philip Obuesi among others where also present at the launch

ARTMA REPORT

Saturday, 4th May 2024

We received reports from tricycle riders along Obodo ukwu road, Ogbaru, about their misunderstandings with our field officers and we immediately arranged for an interactive session.

The tricycle riders took turn to explain their experience, and it was handled one after the other.

We understand the unruly attitude of these riders and MUST checkmate it to ensure Anambra roads are traffic free, but while doing this, we would also make sure they operate with ease in the state.

The team visited Ochanja, where Mr Governor, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo CFR has completely asphalted all the link roads with a state of the art fountain as roundabout. Unfortunately, traders have taken over the roads and commercial vehicles load indiscriminately on the roads.

As it is with ARTMA, we have appealed to all those involved, we asked traders to leave the road and gave commercial drivers designated loading/ offloading positions. We made them understand that our next visit would be for strict enforcement as we all have the obligation of supporting and sustaining the good works of Mr Governor across the state.

The tarred Loius Mbanefo road off Ochanja, which should serve as a bypass for those who wish to connect portharcourt road has been converted to a market, cars no longer drive through but we managed to access the road and again appealed to them to immediately vacate the roads.

ARTMA also wants to use this medium to call the attention of all the street traders to please stop this action immediately as the agency would completely confiscate any item seen across the drainage from Monday, 6th May 2024. This trading doesn't only cause traffic on our roads but deface the beautiful road constructions going on in the state.
