El-Rufai Visits Buhari in Daura, Katsina State

In a significant political move, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has visited former President Muhammadu Buhari at his residence in Daura, Katsina State. This visit places El-Rufai among a cadre of high-profile northern politicians who have recently made the pilgrimage to Daura.

The visit occurred during the Eid-el-Kabir festival, a time when many Muslims come together to celebrate with family and friends. While the specific reasons for El-Rufai's visit remain undisclosed, the timing and nature of the visit have led many to speculate about its political implications.

El-Rufai joins the ranks of other influential figures who have made similar visits in recent times. Earlier, former Vice President and 2023 PDP Presidential candidate Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, along with former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal, were also in Daura to meet with Buhari. These visits have not gone unnoticed by political analysts and the public, stirring conversations about the strategic positioning for the 2027 Presidential elections.

Political commentators suggest that these meetings could be more than mere courtesy calls, potentially serving as groundwork for future political alliances and strategies. Buhari, who remains a central figure in Nigerian politics even after his presidency, is seen as a key influencer within the All Progressives Congress (APC) and beyond. Engaging with him could be crucial for anyone aiming to consolidate political support in the northern region and on the national stage.

El-Rufai's political acumen and influence are well-recognized, and his recent visit to Buhari could signal his intentions for future political endeavors. As the 2027 elections approach, such visits may become more frequent, reflecting the dynamic and often unpredictable nature of Nigerian politics.

The former governor's visit also highlights the ongoing significance of Daura as a political hub. Since stepping down from office, Buhari has continued to attract a steady stream of visitors from across the political spectrum, indicating his lasting influence and the respect he commands.

In summary, El-Rufai's visit to Buhari in Daura during the Eid-el-Kabir festival has added to the growing narrative of political maneuvers ahead of the 2027 elections. While the exact purpose of his visit remains unclear, the context and timing suggest a deeper strategic significance, marking another chapter in the intricate tapestry of Nigerian political life.

Arsenal won’t pay more than €75m for Osimhen.

Arsenal remain interested in signing Victor Osimhen, but they are unwilling to meet his €120m release clause set by Napoli.

Osimhen continues to be highly regarded as one of the top strikers in Europe, and Napoli set the release clause to protect his market value, anticipating high demand this summer.

The striker has agreed with Napoli that he can leave if a suitable offer arrives, and he is now waiting for potential clubs to make their move.
Arsenal is in search of a new striker, viewing Osimhen as a strong candidate after their failed attempt to sign Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig.

Stealing from the Dead: EFCC Arrests Two Former Union Bank Employees

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested two former employees of Union Bank in Makurdi for allegedly embezzling N4,199,500 from the account of a deceased customer. This was disclosed by EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, in a statement released on Saturday in Abuja.

The ex-bank employees, identified as Idah Ogoh and Agbo Okwute, were apprehended last Friday in Makurdi, Benue State. Their arrest followed a petition by the bank concerning fraudulent debits from the account of the late Emmanuel Azer Agenna.

According to Oyewale, the fraudulent activities came to light when the deceased customer's family approached the bank to ascertain the account balance for probate processing. The family disputed the balance provided by the bank and lodged a complaint about unauthorized debits.

The bank's internal investigation revealed that Ogoh had procured a bank card, which he handed over to another Sales and Service Associate, Okwute. Okwute then passed the card to an accomplice, who used it to make unauthorized transfers and withdrawals from the deceased’s account.

"Several withdrawals were allegedly made by the suspects through the accomplice," Oyewale stated. The EFCC has indicated that the suspects will be charged to court as soon as the investigation is concluded.

Atiku Abubakar Visits Former President Buhari

Atiku Abubakar, the People's Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, recently visited former President Muhammadu Buhari at his Daura residence in Katsina State. This high-profile meeting follows Atiku's earlier visits to prominent Nigerian leaders, including former Military President Ibrahim Babangida and ex-Head of State Abdulsalami Abubakar in Niger State.

The visits come amid a flurry of political activity and speculation about the future direction of the PDP and Atiku's political ambitions. Atiku, a seasoned politician and former Vice President, was accompanied on these visits by a delegation that included Senator Aminu Tambuwal, the immediate past governor of Sokoto State, and other key PDP stakeholders.

While the exact reasons for Atiku's visits remain undisclosed, political analysts suggest they could be part of a broader strategy to build alliances and gather support ahead of the 2027 presidential election. Atiku has long been a formidable figure in Nigerian politics, having contested for the presidency multiple times. His persistence in seeking the nation's highest office has been underscored by his recent vow to continue his pursuit as long as he remains healthy.

The meetings with former leaders are particularly noteworthy given their significant influence and standing within Nigeria. Former President Buhari, who recently concluded his tenure, remains a pivotal figure within the All Progressives Congress (APC). Engaging with him could signal Atiku's intent to bridge political divides or seek counsel on national matters. Similarly, Ibrahim Babangida and Abdulsalami Abubakar hold considerable sway and their perspectives on governance and political strategy are highly valued.

Atiku's actions suggest a calculated effort to position himself favorably within the complex landscape of Nigerian politics. By reaching out to these influential figures, he might be aiming to consolidate support across various factions and present himself as a unifying candidate for the future.

Observers will be keenly watching Atiku's next moves as the political climate in Nigeria evolves. His recent engagements indicate that he remains a key player with significant ambitions. Whether these visits will translate into tangible political gains or influence remains to be seen, but they undoubtedly highlight Atiku's strategic acumen and his commitment to remaining at the forefront of Nigerian politics.

I Don’t Care If I’m Removed Again But Kano Emirate Must Remain One – Emir Sanusi

In a candid and extensive interview with Sun Newspaper, Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), declared his willingness to face removal again if it ensures the preservation of the Kano Emirate as a unified entity. Sanusi attributed the current crisis within the Emirate to the immediate past administration in Kano State, led by former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

Sanusi, reinstated as the 16th Emir of Kano following a Federal High Court ruling, emphasized the historical and cultural significance of the Kano Emirate, which has existed for over a millennium. "For me, even now that I am here, only God knows how long I will be here. I can die tomorrow. Another governor can come tomorrow and say that he has removed me, it doesn’t matter. But I am happy if he does not touch the emirate," Sanusi stated.

He expressed his gratitude to the current government and the Kano State Assembly for restoring the emirate to its original state. "I am happy that I will not leave a history that it was during my time that these 1000 years of history was destroyed. So, I am grateful to this government, grateful to this Assembly that they have corrected that, that we have the emirate restored to what it was and Insha’Allah that when I die or when I leave, the person who inherits will inherit what we had," he explained.

Sanusi's comments followed a Federal High Court decision that invalidated the Kano State government's repeal of the Kano Emirates Council Law 2024. This law had led to the removal of Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero as the Emir of Kano and the creation of four new emirates—Bichi, Rano, Karaye, and Gaya—by Ganduje’s administration. The court's ruling directed all parties to maintain the status quo ante, effectively reinstating Sanusi as the Emir.

Human rights lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, criticized the court rulings, describing them as "highly erroneous" and lacking constitutional justification under Sections 251 and 254 (C). Despite these legal controversies, Sanusi remained focused on the larger picture, stressing the importance of the Kano Emirate's unity and historical continuity.

Sanusi recounted the long-standing unity within the Kano Emirate, contrasting it with other regions where new emirates were created due to ethnic and religious diversity. He argued that Kano, a largely homogeneous society, did not require such divisions. "Nobody asked for new emirates. So, what we are dealing with is a situation where somebody divided us," he remarked.

He elaborated on the damage inflicted by the previous administration's restructuring, comparing it to the arbitrary colonial borders drawn by Europeans. "You don’t create emirs for people. Somebody who, for one thousand years, has never been under you, somebody now decrees that this is your king. How?" Sanusi questioned, particularly criticizing the creation of the Bichi Emirate, which was historically governed by a village head.

Sanusi highlighted the complex history and the cohesive fabric of the Kano Emirate, criticizing the arbitrary creation of new emirates and kingmaker positions. "You’re dealing with Kano. You’re not dealing with me. It’s not about me as a person. It’s about our history, our culture," he stressed.

Providing a historical background, Sanusi explained that the Kano Emirate predated Nigeria and even the Sokoto Jihad. "The Kano Emirate was not created by the Nigerian Constitution. The Emirate existed before Nigeria. The Kano Emirate existed before the Sokoto Jihad. Even Uthman Danfodio did not create the Kano Emirate," he said.

He noted that the division of the Emirate disrupted centuries-old traditions and governance structures. "This is the right they claimed for themselves for their contribution to the Jihad. How does somebody now take Mr. A and say I’m creating a fifth kingmaker in Mr. A’s family? What right do you have to join those four? How? What did you do that gives you the right to be a kingmaker?" Sanusi asked.

Sanusi underscored the importance of understanding the historical and cultural context of the Kano Emirate, warning against arbitrary changes that could damage its legacy. "Now, just like the British partitioned Africa, you divided what had existed over a period of time. People need to understand what this government did, because people don’t understand what that law was and the kinds of damage it did to our history’s fabric," he said.

Despite the political and legal turmoil, Sanusi remains committed to preserving the unity and integrity of the Kano Emirate. "It's about the system, not about me or any individual," he affirmed, reflecting his dedication to the Emirate's continuity and historical significance.

Niger Delta Leaders Convene in Abuja for Landmark Summit

Niger Delta Oil and Gas Summit commenced a three-day pre-summit conference in Abuja from Monday, June 16th to Wednesday, June 19th, tagged "Abuja 2024: Niger Delta to the Seat of Power."

Showcasing Niger Delta to the world—and quarterly reviewing, transmitting the state of Niger Delta to the president. This summit is the largest convergence of Niger Delta leaders of various organizations in the region to talk about the state of Niger Delta as they showcase the region beyond oil and the various efforts and solutions of the current president, Bola Ahmad Tinubu's administration, and its performance in the oil-rich region.

Director of Political Affairs, Mr. Vin Yoba, and a chieftain of the Niger Delta Leaders Administrative Council and Ogoni Peace Movement, appreciated the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmad Tinubu and highlighted the unanimous decision of the summit to continue supporting the nation's growth. He commended the president on his recent move to grant local government autonomy, which is expected to restore grassroots development. He concluded by urging the Chief of Staff to the President, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, and the First Lady, Senator Remi Tinubu, to remember the contributions and risks taken by various Niger Delta organizations, calling for their inclusion in appointments to contribute to national growth and be more equipped towards 2027.

In a significant display of unity and purpose, various organizations in the Niger Delta region have come together under the banner of the Niger Delta Oil and Gas Summit to promote the region's development and growth. This summit provides a crucial platform for stakeholders to discuss pressing issues related to oil and gas, peace, and economic development, fostering a collaborative environment for strategic planning and intellectual discourse.

The summit, an alliance of prominent groups such as the Niger Delta Leaders Administrative Council, Niger Delta for Peace, Niger Delta Youth Movement, Elders Council, Ogoni Leaders Council for Peace, Ijaw Reformers Council, NDDC Leaders Council, Amalgamation of Niger Delta Leaders for Change, and Niger Delta Renewed Hope Crusaders, are committed to driving progress and positive change in the Niger Delta through concerted efforts and shared goals.

A notable highlight of the summit was its commendation of President Bola Tinubu for his insightful and strategic appointment of men and women from the oil-rich region to nation-building, especially in the empowerment of the people. This decision reflects a deep commitment to national growth and development, aligning perfectly with the summit's vision for the region.

Dr. King Raphael conveyed the organization's optimism about President Tinubu's leadership qualities and experience, anticipating rapid progress in the nation, in alignment with his "Renewed Hope Agenda."

Furthermore, the summit emphasized the importance of continued collaboration between the government and regional stakeholders. The leaders urged sustained dialogue and cooperation to address the unique challenges and opportunities in the Niger Delta. They believe that with strong leadership and strategic appointments given to men and women from the zone, the region can achieve significant advancements in economic stability and social peace.

The Director of Strategy and Communication, Hon. Uzoka Chukwuemeka, stated that the Niger Delta Oil and Gas Summit's appreciation of President Tinubu's decision in siting strategic projects in the oil-rich region is a testament to their faith in visionary leadership and strategic governance and peace in the oil fields. This acknowledgment underscores the collective hope that, with dedicated and capable individuals at the helm, Nigeria can navigate its developmental challenges and chart a course toward a prosperous future. He concluded by urging the president to look into the NNPC oil block bidding to ensure that best practices and competent companies that will adhere to their social responsibility to the environment and communities are selected.

The summit aims to ensure that the Niger Delta region continues to play a pivotal role in the nation's economic and social advancement. By fostering a spirit of cooperation and mutual respect and envisioning a future where peace and prosperity are shared by all, driven by thoughtful leadership and a commitment to collective progress.

Dr. Preye Jones stated that the Niger Delta is the world's most polluted environment with fossil gas exploitation, with high numbers of biodiversity loss due to oil and gas extraction. There is widespread consensus that there is rampant poverty in the Niger Delta amidst plenty, and therefore an urgent need for transformative change in the region, focusing on accountability in the face of environmental degradation and social dislocations requiring environmental cleanup, equitable compensation, and sustainable practices. Despite its heavy burden as the region responsible for over 80% of the country’s exports, the Federal Government and its intervention agencies have done little or nothing to “tackle ecological and environmental problems that arise from the exploration of oil minerals in the Niger Delta area," requiring urgent action by the Federal Government and the member states on the prevention and control of oil spillages, gas flaring, and environmental pollution. A paradigm shift towards renewable energy sources and sustainable practices to address the interconnected crises of climate change, environmental degradation, and social injustice is paramount.

Empirical evidence presents a gloomy picture that crude oil will not be the driver of economic growth in the future, hence, the need to focus on emerging areas with new opportunities and potentials like agriculture, renewable energy, information technology, and the knowledge-driven economy where MSMEs can thrive and provide enabling platforms for prosperity and sustainable development in the Niger Delta. The Niger Delta Summit is closely intertwined with the broader economic, social, and political development of the region. Economically, the summit will focus on investment opportunities and policy reforms aimed at diversifying the region's revenue base beyond its traditional reliance on oil and gas. Socially, the summit will emphasize SMEs and financial inclusion to empower local entrepreneurs and stimulate job creation, thereby improving the standard of living for the populace. Politically, the summit will represent a strategic effort by the governments in the region, institutions, and agencies, and relevant stakeholders to enhance the governance framework, promote transparency, and foster a conducive business environment that can attract and retain investors.

Diverse investment opportunities will be highlighted across sectors such as oil and gas, agriculture, manufacturing, hospitality, tourism, education, ICT, healthcare, infrastructure development, glass products, garment production, and power generation and transmission. With over 40% of fertile cultivable landmass, the region is positioned to significantly contribute to national food security through commercial investments in mechanized agriculture and the agro-processing industrial value chain.

The summit aims to enhance a multi-stakeholder dialogue to facilitate broad-based conversations to reimagine the Niger Delta and explore new avenues for transformative regional development. It seeks to cultivate collaboration aimed at strengthening partnerships among various stakeholders to advance the developmental agenda of the Niger Delta region. By integrating principles of accountability into public projects, the summit addresses the developmental needs of the Niger Delta and promotes inclusive, sustainable growth. It also promotes building a culture of entrepreneurship and competitiveness beyond oil in the Niger Delta region, advocates for transparency and accountability for economic and social development, and presses for the historical responsibility of IOCs in petroleum extraction in the Niger Delta. Additionally, it explores dynamic economic trends, fosters insightful dialogues, and builds strategic partnerships, setting the stage for a prosperous future for the oil-rich Niger Delta region. The summit further advances legislative action to create a secure business environment through laws that ensure economic prosperity.

The three-day summit ended with awards to the First Lady, Senator Remi Tinubu, as the "Passionate Mother of the Nation," Chief of Staff Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila as the "Friend of the Niger Delta," and Senator Goodwill Akpabio as the "Supreme Leader of the Niger Delta." In a letter to the president, the summit also highlighted the efforts of the new board of the NDDC under MD Samuel Ogbaku and Hon. Chinedu Ebie, along with the exemplary Renewed Hope leadership of three NDDC commissioners: Hon. Kyrian Uchegbu from Imo, Orok Otu Duke from Cross River, and Abasi Nkono from Akwa Ibom. The summit concluded with a resolution to convey the state of the Niger Delta to the president and the senate on a quarterly basis.
