Is Coke Zero really a healthier version of Coke?

While it may looks good on the nutrition panel (0g of sugar), it doesn't tell us the whole story.

Now if you look at the ingredients list, you will start to notice a lot of additives that are unfamiliar with you. That's normal for a Coke of course. But, what we really need to mindful about is the artificial sweeteners. In this case, Aspartame.

Even though Aspartame provides no calories to our body, it is hundred times sweetee than sugar. Most importantly, research has shown that frequent consumption of artifical sweetener would disrupt our gut microbiome. This would cause our body to be more prone to inflammation.

Finally Ive got the chance to try out Huel products. Huel is one of the well-known health supplements company in the UK. What intrigued me wasn't how tasty or nutritious the product is but how they did their marketing.

What food is considered processed food?

Is processed food really harmful to our bodies?

Why do we even want to process the food?

These lingering questions came to mind, especially after reading the book [The Ultra Processed People] by Chris Van Tulleken.

In short, not all processed food is harmful to our bodies because some of it serves the purpose of helping us to digest better and to make it more palatable for our tastebuds. Imagine if we just consumed everything raw. I don't think we can even extract the nutrients from it, especially fibres as they have a protective outer layer called cellulose.

To better understand the level of processing of our foods, a group of researchers from Brazil have come up with a framework to categorize and classify foods based on the extent and purpose of their processing.

Group 1 = natural foods

Group 2 = ingredients that are usually used in combination with group 1 foods to make freshly prepared meals

Group 3 = results from group 1 + group 2

Group 4 = ultra-processed foods

Foods that are made with ingredients that cannot be found in your kitchen. Like artificial sweeteners, thickeners, stabilizers etc.

There are NO benefits whatsoever in consuming foods from group 4.

To my fellow supporters who have never been to Europe, here is a little fun fact for you guys to know.

Did you know that everything shutdown during Christmas especially in Europe. This includes many small businesses, shops, public transports etc.

It was really a hassle for us as we explore around London city today. The only place that we could really find any food was in Chinatown.

Indeed London is a very big city. In fact it is about 6-7 times bigger than the size of Kuala Lumpur. It took us more than an hour of walking to reach the London Bridge starting from Chinatown. Overall, it was a great and tiring journey.

I just drank a ready-to-drink smoothie in a cafe and I am surprised to find that the ingredients listed on the back were quite clean.

As you can see that they didn't include other ingredients like sweetener, emulsifier, and other additives.

What do you guys think? According to the NOVA food system, a ready-to-drink beverages is considered a processed food.

Why do people consume alcohol when they are stressed?

Once you understand the mechanism of how the neurotransmitter in our brain works, I promise that you will find better alternatives to cope with stress.

First of all, we have to know that there is this thing called " ". It is known as the "feel good" hormone which gives you a sense of pleasure. And when you are feeling good, you have the motivation to do something. (Basically, it is a reward for doing something)

As humans, our brains are hard-wired to seek out behaviours that release dopamine in our reward system. When you’re doing something pleasurable, your brain releases a large amount of dopamine. You feel good and you seek more of that feeling.

This is why junk food, sugar, alcohol, smoking, and video games are all so addictive. They trigger the release of a large amount of dopamine into your brain, which gives you the feeling that you’re on top of the world and you want to repeat that experience.

However, our brain is very smart, you can't cheat on it. Our brain knows that when the reward is too easy to get, it won't release that much dopamine. This is why you can't stop drinking alcohol because the brain is already too accustomed to this reward system.

As a general rule of thumb, our brain will release more dopamine, when we have endured more sufferings and finally achieve something great.

Now you might be wondering, there are other things that can increase the dopamine level right? Yes for sure. Activities like going to the gym are a good way to increase your dopamine level. But why aren't more people opting for the gym but drinking alcohol instead?

One simple answer: They don't see working out in a gym as something that can give them pleasure. Because they need a lot of endurance and perseverance. Similar to having a successful career. Many people can't endure the lengthy process of suffering to achieve a successful career. Thus, a lot of them opt for alcohol consumption which can give them a sense of pleasure faster.
