As cited in bernama.com (2016), Malaysian National News Agency or Pertubuhan Berita Nasional Malaysia (BERNAMA) is a news agency of the government of Malaysia. It is an autonomous body placed under the Ministry of Communication and Multimedia. Set up by an Act of Parliament in 1967, BERNAMA began operations in May 1968.
BERNAMA operates from its headquarters at Wisma Bernama, Off Jalan Tun Razak near the National Library, Kuala Lumpur. It has its bureaus in every state in Malaysia. It also has correspondents in Jakarta, Singapore, New Delhi and Bangkok, and stringers in Washington D.C., Sydney, London and Khartoum. Most of the news media in Malaysia and Singapore and international news agencies are subscribed to Bernama.
Bernama began reporting using the audio-visual medium with the opening of its audio-visual division in September 1998. It also has its own radio, named Bernama Radio, which operates 24-hour news and talk radio station broadcasting in Klang Valley, Johor Bharu, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching. Recently, Bernama TV rebranded itself as ‘Bernama News Channel’, which functions as a news and information channel.
