The sixth edition of the Malawi Sport Awards will for the first time be held at Sunbird Nkopola in Mangochi on February 28 2025.

The Malawi National Council of Sports board member and chairperson of the marketing and research committee Gladson Kuyeli said this during a press briefing at the Amaryllis Hotel in Blantyre.

Since inauguration in 2017, the annual awards were being conducted at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe.

"The changes signify diversity in the awards," says Kuyeli in company of fellow board member Hellene Mpinganjira-Tasosa and the Council's marketing, planning and infrastructure development director Limbani Matola.

Other significant changes in the awards include the addition of the best sports journalists of the year category and the involvement of the public in the awardees' selection process.

At least 14 categories will be awarded.

The Centre for Social Research has released findings of an Afrobarometer survey on Malawians’ perceptions of the judiciary and the office of the Vice-President which shows that two in five citizens (40 percent of the population) believe that judges and magistrates often decide cases based on the influence from political leaders.

Despite the concerns, 63 percent of respondents expressed trust in the courts.

The findings further show that three in ten respondents (representing 30 percent of Malawians) suspect that judges and magistrates are involved in corrupt practices.

On the office of the Vice-President, 67 percent of survey participants opposed giving power to the President to appoint or remove the veep while 77 percent respondents supported the abolition of the Vice-President’s office.
