FROM TITO ALMASI

Some few years ago, fortune came knocking in TTC.

It was in the shape of a soft-spoken investor who wanted to put up a multi-billion processing plant somewhere in Voi. In our typical way, some greedy oafs demanded for a kickback to allow the plant to take off.

The guy said I never bribe! Eff off!

Kwale County was waiting on the wings. They seduced the guy with irresistible offer. A prime land at Samburu with access to Nairobi-Mombasa Highway, near SGR for bulk haulage, near High-Voltage power lines and waiver of paying rates to the county. In return, the guy would pump billions into the project and provided locals with jobs.

The guy said Why not.

Years later, Samburu in Kwale is one of the fastest growing centers in Kenya. With over 3k locals earning a living, every young man has a hustle. The plant that TTC rejected is roaring away.

Life went on.

TTC remained stuck with her Iron ore resource; hunger went on ravaging her citizens; joblessness was us; elephants kept invading farms and leaders kept feeding us hopes of better days. Meanwhile, infants became babies who became todlers. The young became old and the old died.

Cycle of left went on. Neither seasons nor time stopped because TTC made impossible demands for investor who has nothing to lose by not investing in her lands.

In 2024, by a rare convergence of fate and luck, the investor came back again. This time, he says he wants to put a plant worth sh 11 billion for processing iron-ore

And because he does not want to mine and process, he wants the local to do the mining themselves. He said he would provide them with equipment for free so they can boost their production to meet the daily demand for the plant.

And because he does not trust politicians' words and to safeguard his multi-billion investment, he was very uneasy about leasing. He wanted certainty that comes with owning his own land. When Wakujaa goes home in 2027, a crazy governor will take over and demand a shares in the plant revoke or else he will revoke the lease and chase the investor off.

The title deed is the surest guarantee his investment is secure.

For TTC, it was a Hobson’s choice. TTC either sell him land and he changes live for thousands or we stick with our barren land and continue being miserable.

The Ngolia Community met. Elders and the wise. They weighed the options. They looked at the miserable past they had endured; they looked at the promised beautiful future that came with the plant. Most will not be alive to see their future; but their children will.

Land was the pathway to that which was promised. And so they looked deep in the eyes of the investor. And spoke.

‘We are land and the land is us. When you give you this land, we give you a part of us. We are old; our lives are over. We cannot be anything else than what we are. But our children can. They can dare dream and become what we could never be. If this thing you promise is what is going to give them a future we never could, this land of ours is an altar where we sacrifice all for our children to fly.’

The investor said.

‘This is a holy pact. I will not let you down.’

Days later, am told an antiquated mummified MCA who thinks he owns the minds of people has started inciting some local idiots to oppose the deal. This MCA, who has been there like forever, has kept winning because he gives handouts to the poorest of the poorest. Poverty is his fodder. Economically empowered voter is his worst nightmare.

Then there are whispers of a former MP who wants to seek political relevance by inciting the locals to reject the deal.

Do they want a cut?

Indeed TTC never learns.

KISHENYI-KISHUSHE WATER PROJECT ON COURSE

There is a significant progress in implementation of Kishenyi Kishushe Water Project as the contractor now embarks on concrete works of the tanks and Treatment Works expected to produce 20m3 of treated water per hour.

Earlier today the Technical Manager, Mr. Jason Mwasicho, led a site inspection visit to ascertain the physical progress and compliance of quality standards on the ongoing works.

Despite the delays caused by the formation of access road to the site, the contractor has committed to give extra effort to ensure that the lost time is recovered.

Once completed, the project is expected to supply treated water from Kishenyi Dam to the residents of Saghasa, Sangenyi, Kishushe and Mlilo areas.

Additionally, the residents living around the dam will benefit through the rehabilitation of Saghasa-Vighombonyi Water Supply system which will also draw clean water from the treatment works.

Good News!!!

Members of Mbulia community land and the larger Mbololo community have unanimously agreed to set aside a portion of land to pave way for the set up of an Iron smelting plant.

Speaking during a special meeting that brought together residents from Tausa, Ndome, Ghazi, Wongonyi and Mbulia the residents underscored the importance of the investment saying it will not only spur growth in the area but generally improve the county's economy.

This follows after Narendra Raval Guru, MGH, EBS, the founder and chairman of the Devki Group of Companies, visited Governor Andrew Mwadime - Wakujaa at his office at Mwatate early last week.
