Demolitions In Kisumu
Today morning the business community in Kisumu CBD were shocked to have witnessed demolitions reportedly being undertaken by the County Government of Kisumu under the direction of the Acting City Manager Mr. Abala Wanga. Stalls that are situated within containers branded Kisumu County Colours were being rolled over by a tractor. It is said that some of the stalls were put yesterday in the evening.
Mr. Wanga allegedly said that they were put up without public participation and were placed on drainage systems and pathways. According to a live feed by Charles Olando the video showed Kisumu residents cheering the exercise as they wondered how all over sudden containers were being put and yet last year traders who were residents for years were left out. The demolotions were being undertaken next to Kenya Power behind Akamba just along the Kenya Railways boundary and also Adjacent to Telkom Kenya's side entrance.
However, Space Buster Limited director Babior Newton who put up the containers, said the containers were erected after their company won a tender to put up 112 containers in eight gazetted areas within the city to provide semi-permanent trading spaces for small and medium enterprises. These are: Maendeleo, Ojino Okewo street lower, Omino Crescent road, Uhuru Business Park and Nyamasaria bus park among others. He added that the acting City Manager is in breach of a contract that was signed by his predecessor Ms. Doris Ombara on behalf of Kisumu County Government. He threatened to go to court so as the contract can be upheld.
