KIBUYE MARKET
The management of Kisumu City has made the commendable decision to temporarily close the Kibuye Market; however, it has fallen short in providing traders with suitable alternative arrangements, particularly given the perishable nature of their goods and the insufficient notice provided.
The current crisis at Kibuye Market was instigated by the actions of Kisumu City management. The situation began to deteriorate following the reopening of the newly renovated market after an extended closure due to the coronavirus pandemic. Upon reopening, the newly constructed toilets which are now generating significant revenue, was entrusted to a single group. Traders have reported that two factions are vying for control over the toilets and determining the allocation of the most strategic stalls for conducting business. These competing factions have allegedly employed machetes wielding goons, reminiscent of the notorious Mungiki sect, who exhibit violent behavior without hesitation and would attack without a second thought. This atmosphere of fear has compelled traders to align with one faction over the other, despite concerns regarding their conduct.
To resolve this ongoing crisis, Kisumu City management must reclaim oversight of the market, as was the practice in the past. All traders should be able to conduct their business in a collaborative environment rather than competing for market control.
Furthermore, the toilets should remain free for use by all. The city can engage cleaners to maintain hygiene standards within the market and ensure the toilets are properly serviced, as was previously done. Alternatively, the city or county government might consider implementing a system to collect revenue from the toilets to enhance overall financial resources.
