Governor Nyong’o said he took the opportunity to seek medical services at the Referral hospital as a way of expressing confidence in local medical facilities.

Nyong’o says he has had a recurring severe pain in his spine.

He noted that the Referral hospital annually hosts a team of international neurosurgeons who perform different surgeries at the facility.

“Last week on Friday, I checked at this hospital after I was told a team of doctors from abroad plus our own doctors would be performing certain surgeries,” he said.

Nyong’o says his family had preferred to have him operated on in hospitals in Nairobi but he chooses to have it carried out in Kisumu.

Addressing the media at the hospital on Monday, five days after he was discharged from the surgical ward, Governor Nyong’o was full of praise for the JOOTRH, staff and a team of visiting surgeons for performing what he termed a historic surgery at the facility.

“I am so happy. I am feeling very okay. I can now walk and sit with ease,” he said.

“Many people could not imagine such a surgery can be done in a public hospital,” said Prof Nyong’o who was accompanied by his wife Dorothy and a team of doctors who performed the surgery.

Nyong’o noted that the visiting neurosurgery team led by Dr Bethwel Raore from Atlanta, together with the JOOTRH team have proven that with adequate skill development, complex surgeries can be performed successfully right here in Kisumu.

The Governor said the neurosurgery team have been visiting JOOTRH regularly, annually for the past eight years.

“The ICU nurses were very caring and professional, especially Nurse Vincent Odingo. The ICU doctor, Dr. Babu was on hand to receive me and advice on my care,” said Nyong’o.

The Governor was discharged the next day on Saturday noting that the surgery has given him tremendous relief on his nerves, which were being compressed by tissue stenosis in a condition known as Cauda Equina Syndrome.

He called on the department of health in the county to continue enhancing health services in the county at all levels so that locals can get the best health care possible at affordable rates.

Kisumu County's Mowlem market grounds on Saturday witnessed a charged atmosphere as the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition party Members of Parliament said the planned protests for next week will go on as long as issues of the high cost of living remain unaddressed.

Leaders present at the rally included National Assembly Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi, Nyando MP Jared Okello, Kisumu Deputy Governor Dr Mathew Owili and Siaya Senator Dr Oburu Oginga among others.

Wandayi called on leaders to support the people, stating that they will pursue justice for those killed during anti-government protests in the recent past.

"You have got no power under the Constitution to determine whether we have demonstrations or not, by Kenyans demonstrating they are simply exercising their constitutional rights, and this they will do," he said.

The leaders emphasized their rights to peaceful demonstrations, directing their concerns to President William Ruto and his deputy Rigathi Gachagua accusing the administration of corruption.

"The power that Ruto and Gachagua are exercising belongs to the people of Kenya, ukisoma katiba hiyo katiba inatuonyesha ya kwamba wanachi wanaeza withdraw hiyo power kutoka kwao and to exercise it on their own, that is the reason why we are collecting 15 million signatures," Dr Owili said.

MP Okello added: "We are demonstrating because of escalating prices of essential items. Ruto must bring down the cost of living in this country and we are going to demonstrate on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and we shall demonstrate forever and we don’t have to ask anybody permission anywhere.”

The Azimio leaders also called for national unity and urged Kisumu residents to stand in solidarity with opposition chief Raila Odinga

ODM has organised a major political rally in Kisumu on the same day President William Ruto is expected in Homa Bay county.

The president is expected at Oriwo Boys High School this Saturday to preside over a thanksgiving ceremony of the interior PS Dr Raymond Omollo.

The head of State is also expected to launch a number of development projects after the highly publicised event that is likely to attract top dignitaries in government.
To ensure everything goes according to plan, the Homa Bay county security team, led by County Commissioner Moses Lilan and the Police Commander Samson Kinne were at the venue to assess ground preparation ahead of the president's visit.

Political leaders from the region, including those from the opposition have been invited to attend the function according to Hezbon Omollo who is the PS's family spokesman.

But while addressing Azimio supporters at Nyamasari, during the Azimio protests on Wednesday, market Milimani ward MCA Seth Kanga put on notice any ODM elected leader who will skip the ODM rally on Saturday.

Without mincing his words, Kanga who is popularly known as Adui said the rally is a must-attend for all the ODM elected leaders.

Adui who is also the ODM branch chairman for Kisumu Central Constituency warned that any elected leader from the party who will miss the rally will be deemed to be working with their opponents.

" We want to tell all our supporters to be on the lookout. On Saturday we expect all the leaders to converge at Nyamasaria and not to go to Homa Bay where the president will be," he said.

"You are either with us or with our opponents and we will identify those who are not with us that day," he added.

Both the Kisumu deputy governor Dr Matthews Owili and the national assembly's minority leader Opiyo Wandayi who is also ODM's director of political affairs confirmed the Saturday rally.

"We are going to have a big rally on Saturday at Nyamasaria in Kisumu East Constituency which we expect will be presided over by our party leader Raila Odinga," Dr Owili said.

Wandayi who spoke to the us on the phone said the rally is part of the ongoing rallies organised to reinvigorate ODM.

Seven people have been admitted within different facilities in Sondu, Kisumu county, with gunshot and arrow wounds, Kisumu Deputy Govenor Mathew Owili has said.

Addressing the press on Wednesday, Owili said four people are admitted at the Sondu sub-county hospital while three others are at Nyabondo Mission Hospital with bullet wounds.

"I have called the Regional commissioner, County commander and sub-county police commander from Nyakach who is on the ground to try and salvage the situation and ensure people's lives are protected."

Owili asked security officers in Kisumu not to take sides when quelling confrontations in the county.

The DG noted that the area MCA is also on the ground to assess the situation.

Area MCA Lumumba Owada said those admitted had gunshot wounds and arrow wounds.

"This is something that is planned and something should be done about it."

Owada claimed they have six spent cartridges, a bow and an arrow that they recovered from the area.

He questioned why the police were using live bullets on the people who were protesting peacefully.

At the same time, he raised concerns about the identity of the people who were using arrows

"We know that the police don't use arrows and when our people have sustained arrows wounds we are left wondering and having lots of questions."

One of the victims admitted to the hospital had an arrow stuck in his mouth.

He called upon the police to come to the defence of the people and ensure law and order prevail.

Some streets in Kisumu were on Wednesday empty while some had opposition supporters who turned up for anti-government protests.

The protesters lit tyres as they adhered to Azimio leader Raila Odinga's call for demonstrations.

Business remained closed with minimal activities witnessed.

Transport was paralysed with no vehicles seen moving around as people kept away from the city.

At the Kisumu bus terminus, a born fire along the streets was already lit with a section of locals already on standby beside the roads.

Others were seen enjoying a football play as they pass the ball among themselves along the streets with others watching from a distance.

At the Agah Khan roundabout, already people were converging as they sang while producing different sounds, others hitting sufurias while those on motorcycles racing and loud horns.

"What we are doing now is warm up before we can start the protest," one of the protestors said.

Police officers were also on standby within Lakeside city as others were seen patrolling and moving around in their vehicles along the CBD.

Two water canons were also seen patrolling and moving along the streets

The locals will all converge on Kondle grounds where they will be led by various County leaders in the protest.

In the last demonstration, the protestors in Kisumu were led by the Kisumu Deputy Governor Mathews Owili, Nyakach Mp Aduma Owuor among the local leaders within the lakeside city.

Three male protesters in Kisumu showed up for the Azimio anti-government demos putting on pink towels only.

The men who were bare-chested were carrying the Kenyan flag and placards that had different messages against the high cost of living.

One placard reads "The Kenya Finance Bill 2023 is an unfair and regressive legislation that favours the wealthy and corporations at the expense of working-class and poor majority."

One of the protesters Victor alias 'towel man' said they are tired of the high cost of living and that something needs to be done to address the matter.

At the main bus terminus, some of the youths were busy playing football as the police watched closely.

The act, is among the many other stunts pulled by Azimio supporters during past demos.

Last week a female protester showed up for Saba Saba protests donning white underwear.

This stunned many with some protesters surrounding her to get a glimpse of what was written on the underwear.

The unknown woman said that Kenyans are tired of everything that was happening in the country, including the high cost of living and the introduction of new taxes.

The white underwear was inscribed both in front and behind.

At the front part, the message read 'Fungua server' while the backside read 'Ruto and Gachagua tokeni State House.

Eight patients were on Saturday rescued after the Senate Adhoc Committee investigating the proliferation of rogue religious organizations raided a church in Kisumu.

The patients were being held at the Holy Ghost Coptic Church and were allegedly being prayed for by the church.

The developments come as the government tightens the noose on churches believed to be promoting controversial practices.

Led by the committee's vice chairperson Shakila Mohamed, the Committee pitched a tent at the church to investigate claims that patients were being held against their will at the facility.

A contingent of heavily armed security officials found eight patients confined in some of the rooms in the church compound and rescued them.

Senator Mohammed said they decided to raid Fr Pesa's church after getting information that a number of sick people are detained within the church premises.

Kisumu Day High School and Nyakach Girls High School are the 2023 Kisumu County Secondary School football under-19 champions.

Kisumu Day saw off Onjiko High School 1-0 in a tense final played at Kisumu Boys grounds that attracted thousands of fans on Friday afternoon.

Before the match started, Onjiko and Kisumu Day fans clashed at the touchline where a few blows and kicks were exchanges before matters calmed down with the presence of police.

With matters calmed, Kisumu Day got off to a perfect start after taking a 1-0 lead inside the opening five minutes when Shadrack Mbaraka shot the ball inside an empty net after the Onjiko goalkeeper Ogaro Valdez failed to hold on to a loose ball.

The game however changed from that moment as Onjiko tried to get an equalizer the entire first half with no breakthrough as the Kisumu Day defense stood tall despite being outplayed by the Nyando Sub-County representatives.

Police in Kisumu are investigating the assault of the university academic staff union (UASU) Maseno chapter Secretary General Dr Stephen Onyango.

County police commander Alphonse Wambua confirmed the incident saying it was being probed.

Onyango was allegedly assaulted by university security guards and sustained injuries on Monday.

“We will take necessary action once the investigations are concluded,” Wambua told the Star on the phone.

He was treated at Chulaimbo sub county hospital and discharged.

The secretary-general reported the matter at Maseno police station after seeking treatment from the hospital.

Onyango had to seek police protection in order to retrieve his car from the university grounds where he had parked it before the assault.

He said he was assaulted at the Siriba campus when he was attending a disciplinary committee meeting of two staff who are members of the union.

“I was pushed, assaulted and bundled into the probox car belonging to the security firm. They drove me away to an unknown destination and later brought me back to the Maseno shopping centre,” Dr Onyango said.

“I had shown up to attend a disciplinary committee he was officially invited to, for two staff members who are members of the Union and who under the rules of natural justice, the labour laws and university policy documents including the human resource manual, must be represented by the union.”

Onyango said that university vice-chancellor Prof Julius Nyabundi demanded that he leave the meeting and ordered him to be thrown out of the institution.

When contacted, Prof Nyabundi and the university’s director of communications Owen Onyango did not pick up calls or respond to text messages over the claims despite several attempts.

Onyango questioned the reasons behind his attack despite having been invited by the university management to attend the meeting according to the letter dated May 15, 2023.

The invitation letter was written to Dr Onyango by the senior assistant registrar, human resource Millicent Madara and copied to VC.

The county government of Kisumu has disbursed Sh102.5 million bursaries and scholarships to support needy students in the area.

The disbursement which is the last tranche for the financial year 2022/2023 is set to benefit 30,515 students.

Deputy Governor Dr. Mathews Owili said this brings to a total of Sh205 million disbursed this financial year with over 30, 000 students benefiting from the program.

Owili, who presided over the disbursement on behalf of Governor Anyang Nyong’o said the beneficiaries were selected out of a total of 52, 984 applications an indicator that thousands of needy students are forced to discontinue their studies due to lack of school fees.

“This, Ladies and Gentlemen, is a crisis, because every year, a big number of needy students fail to get financial support to continue with their studies,” he said and called on the private sector and other stakeholders to partner with the government to ensure more needy students in the area are supported.

The county government, he added, has scaled up bursary allocations per ward from Sh2 million in 2018 to Sh4.1 million and urged other private sector players supporting education in the area to scale up their programmes to support more students.

Owili said the bursary and scholarship programme was a lifeline to many needy students in the county adding that the county government will ensure that the kitty does not dry up.

“This programme has produced many young people who are now taking their various courses in universities,” he added.

Besides the bursary programme, the county government, he added, has made great strides in improving Early Childhood Education Centers and Vocational Training Centers (VTCs).

The number of VTCs, he added, has been increased from 20 in 2018 to 26 in 2023 with three more under construction.

“We are striving to establish at least one VTC per ward to bring the training closer to residents,” he said.

He urged the youth to enroll for training at the centers adding that the county government will continue to give Sh15, 000 as capitation for learners at the institutions. “We have so far spent Sh206 million in capitation grants and we commit to increasing the allocation

A man from Kisumu county hopes to meet Pastor Ezekiel Odero as he believes they could be related. Jeremiah Otieno Odhiambo said he had been watching the man of God and believes they have some resemblance.

"I have been seeing him online, and one day, I looked keenly and noticed we have similar body size and physical appearance. We share some aspects, including tribe and spiritual beliefs," he told

Odhiambo said that once he attended Odero's function in Kasarani, many noticed him as Odero's lookalike.

Donned in a fitting suit, Odhiambo said many believers in the meeting inquired if he was related to the man of God.

"Some were asking me to go and get the holy water because they thought I was part of Odero's entourage. They believed we were somehow related despite my efforts to try and not make a big deal out of it," he added .

He said even at his workplace, his colleagues believe he is attached to pastor Odero, especially after sharing a message on WhatsApp. "I sent my picture and told them they could contact me if they needed any assistance. Wanasema niko na nyota yao. Since then, they are always asking me when I will speak into their lives, including my boss," he joked.

Odiambo is looking forward to meeting the New Life Prayer Centre and Church head pastor to chat with him and seek answers to his questions. "My father was a polygamous man, and maybe there could be a chance he had another family outside. I want to meet him and talk to him. Of course, it would be incredible if I found out we are somehow related. I can't rightfully say he is my brother or cousin. I do not have any expectations for now because people look alike, but if there is a link between us, it would be great," he added.

08/06/2023

KISUMU, Kenya, Jun 6 – A mobile App (M-Taka), has been developed in Kisumu to help the local residents to manage their plastic waste, which has been blamed for polluting Lake Victoria.

The plastic waste management app has become inevitable for the rising level of plastic presence, which has continued to litter the lakeside city.

Benson Abila, the managing director of Taka says the app is the first of its kind in Western Kenya.

Abila says the app will give locals an opportunity to sign up and receive local waste management services.

“The goal of the app is to ensure that we bridge the gap in access to recycling,” he said.

He says they will station their agents in every corner of the city to be able to reach out to clients who will be willing to give out their plastic waste for recycling.

Speaking in Kisumu on Monday as they joined the world in celebrating World Environment Day, Abila announced that the country only recycles 8 percent of its plastic waste.

Abila noted that their initiative will push the low recycling percentage to greater heights.

“We are ready to push it to 100 percent and we are here to sensitize the residents on the need to wipe out plastics amidst us,” he said.

He noted that mind change will ensure that recycling culture is cultivated in the society.

Stela Kamwasir, the Nyanza regional director National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) officer says the initiative is the surest way to stop plastic bottles from entering the lake.

“We want to thank M-Taka for the innovation that they have taken, but it is a connectivity to the producers of waste up to the once that are recycling,” she said.

Kamwasir says through sensitization, locals must be encouraged not to adopt the use and dump of plastic materials, but use and prevent it from returning to the environment in a bad way.

In recent studies, fish samples in the Winam Gulf were found to have contained micro-plastics.

In 2017, the country introduced the gradual ban of plastics, with an extension of the ban to outlaw usage of single-use plastics in protected areas.
