BHAKTI YOGA: Hanuman and Rama
The Hanuman-Rama relationship is a quintessential example of Bhakti Yoga. Hanuman’s unwavering devotion to Rama demonstrates the surrender of the self to the divine, highlighting the essence of this devotional path.
Hanuman ji’s complete surrender to Lord Rama reflects the concept of surrendering the ego to the divine. His humility in recognizing the divinity of Rama demonstrates the the surrender of the self to the higher power.
In essence, Lord Hanuman’s life and teachings embody the essence of Bhakti Yoga, offering a profound example of how pure, selfless love and devotion can lead to spiritual awakening and union with the divine.
The Hanuman-Rama relationship, therefore, goes beyond being a mere narrative; it becomes a yogic allegory, illustrating the principles and practices inherent in various paths of yoga. This symbolism encourages seekers to incorporate these yogic teachings into their own spiritual journeys.

The conflict between Shiva and Daksha reflects the tension between spiritual consciousness (Shiva) and worldly attachments (Daksha). Shiva’s act of destroying Daksha’s arrogance by severing his head signifies the transcendence of ego and the importance of spiritual awakening.
The beheading also symbolizes the detachment from materialistic pursuits, as Shiva is beyond the realm of conventional human emotions. Sati, Shiva’s wife and Daksha’s daughter, immolates herself due to her father’s disrespect, emphasizing the consequences of blindly adhering to societal norms without spiritual understanding.
The story serves as a lesson in the balance between spiritual awareness and worldly responsibilities, urging individuals to cultivate inner wisdom and humility, and to recognize the transient nature of material pursuits.

One of the most renowned episodes featuring Shiva and Vasuki Naag is the churning of the ocean, known as Samudra Manthan. In this mythological event, Devas (celestial beings) and Asuras (demons) join forces to churn the cosmic ocean using Mount Mandara as the churning rod and Vasuki Naag as the rope. As the churning progresses, various divine treasures and elixir of immortality (amrita) emerge, signifying the rewards of cosmic cooperation.
During this intense endeavor, Vasuki Naag willingly offers himself as the rope, demonstrating devotion and sacrifice. Shiva, ever the benevolent deity, agrees to bear the weight of the serpent around his neck, showcasing the delicate balance of power and humility in divine relationships.
The narrative of Shiva and Vasuki Naag serves as a reminder of the interconnectedness of all elements in the universe and the collaborative efforts required for cosmic harmony. It encourages seekers to embrace the challenges of life with equanimity.

The greatness of Hindu scriptures lies in its vast and wide representation. I can’t think of any idea/topic/theory that vedanta or santana dharma hasn’t touched.
Look at this magnificent image of goddess Dhumavati (The widow goddess). She represents the “void” that existed before creation and after dissolution.
She depicts everything considered inauspicious in hinduism, to a level that it might be difficult to even look at her. She embraces void, poverty and even her widowhood just like a sadhak must. For a sadhak, comprehending and embracing these aspects is crucial for spiritual evolution.
These broad and diverse divine manifestations, prompt seekers to acknowledge and transcend dualities.
Let Mata Dhumavati’s representation act as a guide, navigating you through the intricacies and challenges of existence on the journey to realising the ultimate truth.

Vivarta Vāda, Ādi Śaṅkara’s famous explanation of the relation between the Absolute (Brahman-Eternal truth) and the finite world, is expressed in the story of ‘The snake and the rope.’
In the darkness, a rope is mistaken for a snake. When light arrives, the illusion of the snake created by the lack of illumination is removed, and once again, the rope appears in its true reality. Likewise, this material world is also just an illusion created by our own mind due to lack of light.
Owing to Māyā (veiling ignorance), we believe in the existence of the finite world, like the snake in darkness.
When the knowledge of the eternal truth and onenesses dawns, the world disappears, and once again, only the Absolute exists.

This early Bengal painting depicts Mata Anna Poorna feeding Lord Shiva.
Notice how Lord Shiva is bowing down to his wife, who is sitting, on what feels like a throne. Shiva’s arching back reflects gratitude, respect, and nullifies the ego and the sense of authority which most men carry with them.
There is no role reversal, rubbing feminism in your face, but just a benevolent image teaching us the art of coexisting.
If in a relationship, your partner “feeds” you (with love, respect), your reflex should be bowing down and giving them a pedestal, not presuming that you’re entitled and not letting societal standards of power dynamics make you pompous and arrogant.
