CBS is the video and audio broadcasting body of IIT Guwahati. The industry-grade system is entirely designed and run by students.
We are students from different disciplines of IIT Guwahati interested in video making, audio-mixing, broadcasting and live streaming. We record and live stream events in the campus.
The core aspect of broadcasting is the live content. In live shows it breaks into two broad areas namely:
Audio
Video
Audio mixing deals with getting audio from various sources into a pleasant audio stereo track so that it can be broadcasted alone or with the video. From a monologue to a multi-band music concert, the difficulty and complexity increase exponentially. We have a 48-channel digital audio mixer, professional-grade microphones and other audio and recording equipment.
Video mixing deals with getting the live video feed from different cameras, colour-correcting them and mixing them on the fly so that the process of post-production is drastically reduced. We have one-of-its-kind equipment available in CBS like Black Magic Studio Cameras, Nikon D-750 DSLRs, Black Magic video mixing hub, camera control unit for controlling the studio cameras remotely to make changes like zooming, focus, colour-correction etc.
Technical Aspects of Live Streaming
Apart from audio and video mixing we also take pride in hosting live streams on our own servers. Live streaming on YouTube or Facebook is a rather easy task because they handle all the load from the traffic. The real challenge comes when we have to do that ourselves because each Full HD (1080p) stream takes up to 4.5 Mbps bandwidth and serving to a large audience at the same time becomes a real challenge. In CBS, a lot of research is being done on various aspects of live video streaming like multi-bitrate adaptive streaming, less buffering of videos on the client side, serving content to larger audiences with limited resources - all this while working on cutting-edge live streaming technologies like HLS and MPEG-DASH.
You can read more about this on our technical write-up. Here we discuss how we live streamed the 19th Convocation of IIT Guwahati on our servers configured by the CBS team.
Campus Radio
CBS also manages a 24x7 campus radio which plays the latest tracks of all genres and languages over intranet. In between the songs, we run jingles of some campus announcements. We also host weekly radio shows encompassing various topics ranging from casual chit-chat and weekly campus news to interviews with professors. The Campus Radio also hosts timely podcasts discussing a wide range of topics the IITG community is working on.
Various events organized/covered by CBS
CBS organizes Open Jams once a semester where people from several disciplines all over the campus join in and play instruments of their choice to showcase their talent.
We cover major events organized in the auditoriums like the IITG tech fest Techniche and events of eminent orators and academicians.
CBS also records and live streams musical events which happen on campus as a part of Spicmacay where Padma Shree and Padma Bhushan awardees perform.
The live streaming and recording of the IIT Guwahati convocation and other events like the electoral debates are handled single-handedly by CBS.
