Obsession & Wild Pigeons

Chughtai writes of subversive women as they experience romantic and sexual desire, defy societal restrictions, struggle, scheme and sometimes court tragedy.

Obsession deals with one of Chughtai’s favourite themes, the ‘master-servant’ romance, while Wild Pigeons is based on the experiences of a famous Bollywood personality.

Bans & Bar Girls: Performing Caste In Mumbai’s Dance Bars

This book analyses the reasons for the ban on bar girls in Maharashtra. It introduces the radical concept of caste capital to examine the process that led to the ban, the opposition to it, and the legal arguments for and against it. It analyses the implications of all these on caste and gender dynamics, and on the power play that sought to reinforce the caste and social status quo, via legislation.

Schizophrenia is not a mental illness to me. It is not a brain disease. It is a word that can send shivers down anyone’s spine faster than the bogeyman. I intentionally use the word ‘schizophrenist’, not because I want to flaunt the label, but because I want people to know that they can come up with any label out there and throw it at me and I will still find a way to own it, use it and turn its entire meaning over. This to me is schizophrenia. As disturbing as the experience of it is, it is only that—an experience. Just another way to be and to exist.”

Meet the dynamic powerhouse, Reshma Valliappan, fondly known as Val Resh. She is an inspiration as is her art. Her laughter is infectious as is her passion. Diagnosed with schizophrenia at the age of 22, she has penned Fallen, Standing: My Life as a Schizoprenist, an extraordinary, first-of-its kind account about her own experience of living with therapies and medication, surviving su***de attempts and finding support groups.

Fallen, Standing shines a gripping and necessary spotlight on schizophrenia. This must-read book is a triumph of her [Valliappan’s] spirit in the face of years of stigma, judgement and isolation. —NDTV

Ecology, equity and efficiency meet in biodiversity, while they are in opposition with each other in monocultural and homogeneous systems. Neither ecological sustainability nor livelihood sustainability can be ensured without a just resolution of the issue of who controls biodiversity.

After centuries of the gene-rich South having contributed biological resources freely to the North, governments in the South are no longer willing to have biological wealth appropriated for free and sold back at exorbitant prices to them, as ‘improved’ seeds and packaged drugs.

To redress the North-South imbalance and to recognise the contributions of local communities to the development of biodiversity, it is imperative that regimes based on bio-imperialism be replaced by structures based on bio-democracy. Bio-democracy involves recognising the intrinsic value of all life forms and their inherent right to exist. To understand the links between biodiversity, bio-technology and climate chaos, read Terra Viva – My life in a Biodiversity of Movements by Vandana Shiva: https://womenunlimited.in/catalog/product/view/id/22741

Ship of Sorrows by Qurratulain Hyder and translated by Saleem Kidwai

Somewhat idealistic set of young people with deep bonds of family friendships linking generations. Groomed in the best traditions of the east and the west. These aspiring writers, dancers and artists bemoan the loss of the goodness of humanity, of the Ganga-Jamuni culture, and the death of the old order, which has caught them off guard.

Between Democracy and Nation: Gender and Militarisation in Kashmir

Drawing on women's subjective experience of militarisation, Seema Kazi, examines the relationship between state military processes at the 'national' level and social transformations at the local/societal level. By way of conclusion, she maintains that Kashmir's humanitarian tragedy - exemplified by its gender dimensions - underlines why militarisation has failed to either ensure 'security' for the state, or security and justice for Kashmiris.

OUT NOW!!!

Terra Viva: My Life in Biodiversity of Movements by Vandana Shiva

Trained as a physicist, Vandana Shiva says, “It was Chipko that made me realise, in intimate detail, how biodiversity is at the heart of sustainable economies.” Working with peasant women in her home state of Uttarakhand, she learnt her first lessons in ecology: transferring fertility from the forest to the field. Chipko became her “university” and, turning away from quantum physics, she made the preservation of biodiversity and sustainable societies her life’s work.

This powerful memoir looks back at the most memorable campaigns and movements that Shiva has been part of, while looking ahead to the challenges posed by the COVID crisis, the privatisation of biotechnology, and the commodification of our biological and natural resources. “The awareness that Vandana’s work and actions provoke is sublime,” says Gilles-Éric Séralini, “it will bring you light.”

Life under occupation is preventing “million[s] [of] Palestinians from living a normal life.” What the media should do ... is to cover the stories of “people who want to act, to make music”. Because the crux, as [Saud] Amiry puts it, is: “we don't want to be heroes. We want the right to live.”

A powerful Palestinian voice was recently silenced, but the struggle to be heard, to share their lived reality continues for hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, whether at home or in exile. Here’s a selection of heartfelt narratives that give “exceptional” insight into their world, their resistance, their hope.

GOLDA SLEPT HERE
Politics enters the lives of every family in Palestine. In this literary-historical tour de force, Suad Amiry traces the lives of individual members of some Palestinian families and through them, the histories of both Palestine and émigré Palestinian community in other countries of the Middle East.

Through poetry and prose, monologue and dialogue, we glimpse the lost Palestinian landscape, obscured by the silent battle between remembering and forgetting.

Social media produce numerous spaces and opportunities, globally, for people to link up, reach out, mobilise, assert their identity, build bridges... For those on the margins, this virtual alternative enables them to break down otherwise impenetrable social barriers and form close-knit digifams.

Is social media, then, a credible space for building social movements? Who is using it to register dissent, affect change? How successful have such movements been? Are the prejudices that exist offline, present online as well? What is the political fallout of multidirectional conversations on the Internet? What about the backlash from trolls and gatekeepers?

How does one partition the culture and ideals of an individual?”
“Who will come to your plays and our dances now? Don’t you know that new walls have been built around art, that blood is flowing in the valley and on the roads? Many have died and more will die.”

Qurratulain Hyder’s Ship of Sorrows combines autobiography, fiction, and the documentation of time and place. The author debuts in the novel as Anne Hyder and is part of a thinking, art-literature loving, and somewhat idealistic set of young people with deep bonds of family friendships linking generations.

Unlike Sa’adat Hasan Manto, Ismat Chughtai and other celebrated writers whose Partition stories were largely written from the perspective of average men and women who witnessed its horrors, Ship of Sorrows is a coming-of-age story, without a conventional storyline.
