Air India Express has cancelled more than 80 flights and scores of flights have been delayed as a section of cabin crew members have reported sick to protest against the alleged mismanagement at the Tata Group-owned airline, sources said on Wednesday.

The airline, which is in the process of merging AIX Connect (formerly AirAsia India) with itself, is to operate 360 daily flights during the summer schedule that started in the last week of March.

An Air India Express spokesperson said the airline is engaging with the cabin crew members to understand the reasons for reporting sick and also apologised for the flight disruptions.

Discontent has been brewing among a section of the cabin crew at the low-cost carrier for some time now, especially after the start of the merger process.

The sources on Wednesday told PTI that more than 200 cabin crew are believed to have reported sick to protest against the alleged mismanagement at the airline.

The cabin crew shortage has resulted in the cancellation of at least more than 80 flights since Tuesday night and scores of flights were delayed.

Another farmer died at a protest site on Shambhu Border on Tuesday.

He was identified as Jaswant Singh (70), a resident of Shahbazpur village in Tarn Taran.

Farmers at the protest site said that he had gone to sleep last night, but did not wake up in the morning. Samyukt Kisan Morcha leader Sarvan Singh Pandher said that the body of the farmer has been rushed the hospital in Rajpura for medical investigation.

Jaswant Singh is survived by his wife Balwinder Kaur and three children, including a son and two daughters.

The launch of Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft, scheduled to carry NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Barry Wilmore to the International Space Station (ISS) was on Monday (local time) postponed after a valve glitch in the upper stage of the rocket set to propel it to space.

Rocket company United Launch Alliance’s Tom Heter III the director overseeing the launch announced the decision to delay the launch about two hours before the expected lift off from the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida, United States.

NASA announced on social media platform X that the problem was identified with an oxygen valve on part of ULA’s Atlas 5 rocket and that the space agency, Boeing and ULA have “scrubbed the launch opportunity on May 6 for the agency’s Boeing Crew Flight Test to the International Space Station due to a faulty oxygen relief valve observation on the Atlas V rocket Centaur second stage. The crew and rocket remain safe and more information will be forthcoming.”

Star batter Virat Kohli was on Monday fined half of his match fees for showing dissent towards umpire’s decision during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL match against Kolkata Knight Riders.

Kohli was given out after the he was caught off a waist-height full-toss delivery Harsh*t Rana during RCB’s one-run loss to KKR at Eden Gardens on Sunday.

The Hawk-Eye system that measures no-balls for height came into play. The delivery, which seemed to be dipping on the batter, was just above the waist when he made contact with the ball.

“Kejriwal’s sugar level was continuously getting high and his sugar had gone up to 320,” claimed AAP sources.

At least 10 died after two navy helicopters collided in mid-air during a military rehearsal for a Royal Malaysian Navy parade, reports BBC.

The incident took place at the navy base in Lumut.

One of the helicopters is believed to have crashed onto a running track, while the other crashed into a swimming pool around.

WHY IS IMMIGRATION SUCH AN ISSUE IN BRITAIN?

Taking back control of Britain’s borders and ending the free movement of people into the country was a major factor that led to the 2016 vote for Britain to leave the European Union. Polls show it remains one of the most important issues for voters.

Official figures put 2022 annual net migration to the United Kingdom at a record of 745,000, and Sunak has set out a series of measures to cut legal migration by 300,000.

He has also promised to stop people making the dangerous journey of about 20 miles (32 km) across the Channel in small boats.

More than 29,000 people arrived this way last year, after a record 45,775 migrants arrived in 2022. So far this year (up to April 10), more than 5,500 people have been detected, a similar rate to 2022.

WHAT IS BRITAIN’S RWANDA PLAN?

The scheme, which was agreed in April 2022 by then Prime Minister Boris Johnson, sends anyone who arrived in Britain illegally after Jan. 1, 2022 to Rwanda, some 4,000 miles (6,400 km) away.

However, the first deportation flight in June 2022 was blocked by European judges. The UK Supreme Court then upheld a ruling that the scheme was unlawful because migrants were at risk of being sent back to their homelands or to other countries where they would be at risk of mistreatment.

Despite no deportations taking place, Britain has already paid Rwanda more than 200 million pounds ($304 million), and to resettle some 300 refugees could cost more than 600 million pounds. It also remains unclear how many people Rwanda can take.

A cab driver was shot dead following an alleged road rage incident here, officials said on Monday.

Police said that the incident took place around 12 am, when the cab driver crossed the traffic light signal of Anguri Bagh and his vehicle brush passed an e-rickshaw.

“Initially, we got to know that a verbal spat ensued between the cab driver and an e-rickshaw rider. Meanwhile, two youths reached there on a scooter, and one of them shot the cab driver. He was rushed to the LNJP Hospital, where he was declared dead. Teams have been formed to investigate the matter and nab the accused,” a senior police officer said.

Addressing the emergency meeting of the UN Security Council, which was convened after Iranian drone and missile launches into Israel, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Sunday said the ‘Middle East’ was on the brink, adding that neither the region nor the world can afford more war.

“We have a shared responsibility to work for peace. Regional—and indeed global—peace and security are being undermined by the hour. Neither the region nor the world can afford more war,” Guterres said in his statement.

“The Middle East is on the brink. The people of the region are confronting a real danger of a devastating full-scale conflict. Now is the time to defuse and de-escalate. Now is the time for maximum restraint,” he added.

He also condemned the Iranian air raids into Israel to avenge the attack on its embassy in Syria, which left three of its top military generals dead, while calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities.

Various digital initiatives have been undertaken by the Election Commission of India for the convenience of voters. The most significant among these is e-EPIC, which allows voters to obtain their Electoral Photo Identity Cards digitally. Now, voters can download their voter cards from the comfort of their homes.

Sharing more details, an official spokesperson said that if a voter has misplaced his/her voter ID or wishes to save a digital copy of the voter card, it can be easily download from the Voter Helpline app or the Election Commission’s website https://www.eci.gov.in/.

The Mumbai Police have reportedly arrested Vaibhav Pandya, the stepbrother of cricketers Hardik Pandya and Krunal Pandya, for allegedly duping them of Rs 4.3 crore by diverting funds in a business partnership.

According to a report by The Times of India, 37-year-old Vaibhav is accused of diverting money from a partnership firm based in Mumbai, leading to financial loss for Hardik and Krunal Pandya.

The report states that the Economic Offences Wing of the Mumbai police has charged Vaibhav Pandya with cheating and forgery in connection with these actions.

The CBI arrested Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader K Kavitha today in connection with a corruption case linked to the alleged Delhi excise policy scam, sources said.

The agency took her custody in Tihar Jail, where she is currently under judicial custody till April 23 in the same case after being arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) last month. CBI officials are learnt to have questioned her inside Tihar Jail after being permitted by a special court. She was reportedly grilled over the WhatsApp chats recovered from co-accused Buchi Babu’s phone and documents related to a land deal, after which an amount of Rs 100 crore was allegedly paid to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in kickbacks to swing the excise policy for the national capital in favour of a liquor lobby.

Later, Kavitha’s lawyer told mediapersons that they got information about her CBI arrest even though no notice was served on her or her counsel.

Spyware can control mobile phones merely by giving a missed call on WhatsApp.

Alert comes at a time when around 60 nations, including India, are going to the polls.

Apple has told notified users to protect their device by enabling lockdown mode.

Though deployed against a small number of individuals and often involving exceptional costs, mercenary spyware attacks are “ongoing and global”, according to an Apple threat notification. Issued on April 10, the notification indicated that such attacks had historically been associated with state actors, as per past research and reports.

A day after the Delhi High Court dismissed CM Arvind Kejriwal’s petition challenging his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a money laundering case linked to the alleged excise policy scam, the AAP convener on Wednesday moved the Supreme Court.

A Bench led by CJI DY Chandrachud agreed to consider Kejriwal’s request for urgent hearing of his petition after senior counsel AM Singhvi mentioned it for immediate listing.

The ED was in possession of “enough material” that led to his arrest, the court said, rejecting his allegations of political vendetta.
