The first edition of The Star rolled off the press at 3.20am on October 10, 1979.
Since its independent start The Star has gone from strength to strength.
Owner Michael Wansey put The Star on the streets due to the community wanting a newspaper to meet its needs.
Since then ownership has transferred four times - to the NBN Television group, Rural Press and Fairfax Media and in 2019 Nine, the current owners.
The Star has moved several times since its humble start in Merewether Street, Newcastle.
The original office was between the Civic railway gates and the harbour.
Then it moved to Mosbri Crescent, The Hill; the next address was Ridley Street, Charlestown; followed by Brunker Road Broadmeadow.
In December 2008, The Star relocated into Fairfax's Newcastle Newspapers building at 28 Bolton Street, Newcastle. The Star moved to Honeysuckle with the Newcastle Herald in 2015.
The Star expanded its advertising base into the real estate market in 1993, with the purchase of The Newcastle Times - now known as Domain.
