Galway’s firefighters are by their nature a hardy crew – so when Storm Ernesto threatened to derail their plans for a charity row from Inis Oirr to Galway, they simply moved from sea to river and rowed up and down the Corrib instead. Not just that – they did it in a currach they built […]

In two weeks time Fire Ireland along with Firefighters from the Retained Fire Service of Ireland, FDNY and Friends of Firefighters in NYC will cycle to Kinsale to remember all the firefighters lost on 9/11 and in Bray, County Wicklow in 2007

We'll also be remembering all the Firefighters lost post 9/11 due to illness and those sick from 9/11 illness.

This week the FDNY lost two more

FDNY FF EDWARD THOMPSON of Ladder Co 80 and FDNY BATTALION CHIEF KEVIN BLAINE of the Safety Battalion

Tomorrow Friday August 23rd, Galway City Fire Station's full-time and retained firefighters will embark on a very special charity project.

The Firefighters will row a traditional Irish currach that they have spent the last six months building from scratch. This project is entirely voluntary with firefighters dedicating their own time to make this happen.

Beginning at approximately 9 a.m. from the slipway at the University of Galway Playing Fields in Dangan, three firefighters (from each of the station’s six crews) will take turns rowing the currach along a 3 km stretch of the River Corrib.

After each 6km return leg, the crews will rotate aiming to cover a total of 46 km—the equivalent distance from Inis Oírr to the Claddagh! The row will take approximately 6-8 hours, depending on conditions.

The currach was designed and built by firefighters with deep roots in fishing and carpentry. Since its completion, the crews have been training hard for this challenging row. The Oliver family, with a long seafaring tradition in the Claddagh, will provide safety and support throughout the event. Two of the Olivers are also full-time firefighters.

The charity partner for this event is Cancer Care West, a cause close to the hearts of the firefighters. Cancer has touched many in the service, including the loss of a colleague nine years ago and the wife of a firefighter two years ago. This row, wholeheartedly, is to raise awareness and much-needed funds for the vital services Cancer Care West provide.

Earlier this week some of the firefighters taking part spoke with John Morley on Galway Talks (Galway Bay FM). Last weekend, they showcased the currach and held a bucket collection on Shop Street.

So far, they've raised approximately €14,500 through an iDonate page and street collections. As this event approaches tomorrow, they’re hoping for even more support.

Personnel from Galway Fire and Rescue Service will be present throughout the event.

Everyone is welcome to come along, show their support, and learn more about this great project from the firefighters themselves.

Dublin to Kinsale Charity Cycle

This September 9th Fire-Ireland will be joining just under 100 cyclists (50 Firefighters from Ireland and 40 FDNY FFs from New York) and we'll be cycling 312kms over 3 days from Dublin to the Ringfinnan 9/11 Garden in Kinsale, County Cork

As someone who has been involved in organising this event since last December it's been a mammoth task to get to where we are highlighted by the fact the US Ambassador to Ireland will be launching the event from her Residence in the Phoenix Park.

The Charity the US team are cycling for is Friends of Firefighters in NYC

The Irish team are cycling for Aoibhainns Pink Tie who are the National Kids Cancer Charity and do amazing work for families with kids dealing with cancer. I've met with the joint founder Jimmy Norman who set up the charity after his 8yr old daughter lost her life to cancer and the work he and the charity do is second to none

So if you'd like to support Fire-Ireland and the team please drop me a DM and we can arrange sponsorship or scan via Revolut QR code pictured below

Thanks All

In just sixteen days, Friends of Firefighters will be ✈️ to Dublin🇮🇪 with our amazing team of FDNY 👨‍🚒 cyclists🚴‍♂️☘️

We could not be more proud of our team! Over the past few weeks, they have completed numerous practice rides and worked incredible hard to raise money and awareness for our organization.

Every single one of us cannot wait for this trip. We are beyond excited to meet the members of the who will be riding with us 🚲. They have worked tirelessly, plotting our route from Dublin to Kinsale, while also helping set up events with the US embassy and the 9/11 Remembrance Garden in Kinsale.

We are more than 75% 📈 of the way to our $150,000 fundraising goal 💪! But don’t worry! There is still time for you to get involved and to support our riders. If you would like to donate to their efforts in supporting our work in offering free confidential mental health services to the FDNY community, please visit the linktree in our bio!
