Magical displays in Sunyani, as traditional priests and warriors mourn late Sunyanimanhene

Sunyani, the Bono Regional capital was greeted with cultural displays and magical performances, as traditional priests joined mourners for the commencement of the pre-burial and final funeral rites (Dotoyie) of the late Sunyanimanhene Nana Bosoma Asor Nkrawiri II.

Born on May 31, 1946, and known in private life as Osei Kofi, Nana Nkrawiri II, a retired educationist was enstooled on March 17, 1980 and died somewhere in 2023 after a short illness.

The Sunyani Traditional Council has set April 1 to April 7, 2024 for the late Paramount Chief's interment and Dotoyie.

Clad in smock and other traditional regalia, with varieties of talismans around their necks, hands and legs, the more than 20 priests exhibited their traditional dancing prowess on the streets of the capital to entertain hundreds of mourners who had arrived in the town to pay their last respect to the late Paramount Chief.

Drawn from the various shrines dotted around the Municipality and elsewhere, the presence and traditional performances of the priests and other traditional warriors, however, scared some of the mourners.

As some of the priests, mostly in dreadlocks broke and swallowed uncooked eggs, amid chanting of traditional warring songs, the warriors also fired sporadic musketries to scare onlookers.

Some of them also wore cowries and held traditional staffs, machetes and fly-whisks as they demonstrated their supernatural powers.

The premises of the old Sunyani palace in the enclave of the Sunyani Victoria Park were filled with magical displays and performances as the traditional priests dash out lotto numbers and other gifts.

In an interview, Nana K**i Korang, an official of the Bono Regional Office of the Centre for National Culture, and a member of the funeral committee explained the performances of the priest were essential to preserve the nation's culture and tradition, which reflected the true identity of the people.

He described the performances of the traditional priests and warriors as an essential custom demand to give the late Paramount Chief a befitting burial.

"This is a true African religion and reflects our true identity as African people", Nana Manu, the Chief Abrafo (Executioner) of the Sunyani Traditional Area, stated and called for the promotion and preservation of the African culture.

Bono NRSA intensifies campaign against drunk-driving, speeding on crash prone-highways

The Bono Regional Secretariat of the National Road Safety Authority has cautioned commercial drivers against drunk driving and speeding, as the Easter festivities set in.

According to Miss Abigail Atinpoka, the Bono Regional Head of the NRSA, the authority had intensified spontaneous alcohol checks at bus terminals and accident-prone highways in the region, and warned that the culprit would be prosecuted.

The road enforcement exercises are being conducted on the Berekum-Sunyani, Sunyani-Techiman, Sunyani-Goaso and Sunyani-Abesim stretches.

In an interview with the media in Sunyani, Ms Atinpoka said the authority had procured breathalyzer machines (alcohol tester or detector machines) and had deployed personnel to check commercial drivers before journeying.

Additionally, she said the authority in collaboration with key partners including the Driver Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) and the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) had begun road enforcement on speeding and removal of unprescribed lamps on vehicles.

Ms Atinpoka said the authority in the region was determined to ensure that crashes and the attendant needless fatalities were brought under the barest minimum, worrying that despite intensified road safety campaigns, road crashes seemed increasing in the region.

So, the authority soon commenced the registration of fleets of buses of transport operators, and civil society organisations, as well as training of commercial drivers, she stated.

As an election year, Ms Atinpoka called on commercial drivers in particular, to endeavour to adhere to road traffic signs and regulations, avoid wrongful overtaking and overloading as well as speeding to save lives and properties.

She further entreated everybody, travelers, and passengers and all road users to check drivers against negligence and called on transport unions to ensure that vehicle owners do the periodic maintenance of their vehicles.

Ms Atinpoka said the devastating and economic impact of road crashes remained enormous, hence the need for shared and collective responsibility to bring sanity and control crashes on the highways.

Road crashes kill seven people within two months in Bono region-NRSA

Road crashes killed seven people in the Bono region between January and February this year, Miss Abigail Atinpoka, the Bono Regional Head of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has said.

They died through 25 recorded crashes which also injured 33 others, she told the media in an interview in Sunyani on Tuesday.

Comparatively, Ms Atinpoka said the crashes saw a sharp increase, 2023 recording six deaths, 25 injuries and 16 crashes, an increase of 56.25 percent in crashes, 32 percent in injuries and 16.67 percent in deaths.

Describing the crashes and deaths as needless, unfortunate and unfortunate, Ms Atinpoka said that in an election year, there was the need for everybody to contribute towards bringing sanity to the road.

She reminded the public that the Easter festivity was always associated with crashes because of driver negligence and speeding, and entreated everybody to help check drivers against drunk driving, speeding and carelessness.

Ms Atinpoka said with an effective collaboration between the authority and the general public crashes and needless fatalities could be brought under control in the festive season, and urged passengers and road users to report negligent drivers to the police or the authority.

She said the authority in collaboration with key partners including the Driver Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) and the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) had begun road enforcement on speeding and removal of unprescribed lamps on vehicles.

Ms Atinpoka said the authority in the region was determined to ensure that crashes and the attendant needless fatalities were brought under the barest minimum, worrying that despite intensified road safety campaigns, road crashes seemed increasing in the region.

So, the authority soon commenced the registration of fleets of buses of transport operators, and civil society organisations, as well as training of commercial drivers too, she stated.

Teachers strike: Parents, guardians in Sunyani implore gov't to resolve labour issues

Some parents and guardians in the Sunyani Municipality has implored the government to resolve the impasse between the Ministry of Education and the teacher unions.

Three teacher unions: the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers, Ghana (CCT-GH) have laid their tools down pressing on the government to improve the condition of service of members.

The labour unions began the indefinite industrial action on March 21, 2024

“This cannot continue like this, Nana Addo should intervene because our children’s lives are at risk, “ Mr. Kaakyire K**i, a parent told Sky News in an interview in Sunyani.

“These frequent strikes are having a huge toll on our children and the government must act swiftly affect” Grace Ash*tey, another concerned mother indicated.

For Madam Abena Nyamekye “every day teachers are going on strike and that is unacceptable".

During a round visit to some of the basic schools in the Municipality, Sky News noticed academic work was not progressing, as some schools played in the schools.

As at 1030 hours, there were only five teachers idling at the SDA Primary and JHS.

At the St. Anselm Anglican JHS, there were only nine teachers with few students, but while the Boahene Kokor Presby 'A, and 'B' primary were closed.

The situation was not different from Sunyani M/A school. Only about seven teachers had reported at the time of the visit.

Skin NTDs patients appeal for government support

People suffering from Skin Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) in the Dormaa Municipality of the Bono Region have appealed for government support to enhance their socio-economic livelihoods.

They said they needed such assistance to go into viable economic activities to empower them to access medication and treatment, and also for the upkeep of themselves and families.

The patients are infected with Buruli Ulcer, yaws, lymphatic filariasis (elephantiasis) and leprosy, with others also suffering from psycho-social and mental health problems.

In an interview with the media at Maasu, near Dormaa-Ahenkro during a capacity building training, Madam Yaa Nyamekye, the spokesperson said the more than 21 affected people were neglected and highly stigmatized because of the wrong public perception about the NTDs.

The public believed the skin-NTDs are linked or traced to witchcraft and wizardry and family curse and thereby making life uncomfortable, she stated.

Madam Nyamekye said the affected people, mostly spread across Aboabo Number One, Aboabo Number Two, Aboabo Number Three, Ahyiraso, Maasu, Toforo, Kofiasu, Asekasu and Babianeha farming communities, needed more support fend for themselves and their families.

The MIHOSO International Foundation, and BasicNeed Ghana, NGOs organised the training as part of an NTDs project both organisations are implementing in the Dormaa Municipality aimed at enhancing the quality of life of vulnerable and affected people in the area, and being funded by the Anesvad Foundation.

Titled “Building civil society coalition to advocate an integrated approach to control skin-NTD’s and enhance the quality of life of vulnerable and affected people in Ghana”, the two-year project sought to contribute towards prevention, control and elimination of the NTDs infection, ameliorating the mental health and psychosocial impact of debilitating the disease and social stigma.

Madam Nyamekye said though the project implementation had supported some of the affected people to engage in economic activities, they needed more assistance from the government and other NGOs to make life better for them.

She commended MIHOSO and its partners for the support, and called for intensified public education on the NTDs to help address the wrong misconception society had about the NTDs and to control the attendant high stigma and discrimination.

Mr Daniel Owusu-Amponsah, the Dormaa Municipal Disease Control Officer said the NTDs had been endemic in about 30 farming communities in the municipality since 2010, saying last year the municipality recorded eight confirmed cases of Buruli Ulcer.

The confirmed cases were out of the 17 suspected Buruli Ulcer cases where samples were picked for testing.

Mr Owusu-Amponsah said it was untrue that the NTD’s were linked to satanism, and advised affected people from visiting prayer camps and shrines to seek for cure, instead report to nearest health facilities for medical treatment.

Besides buruli ulcer, he said the municipality had also recorded three confirmed cases of leprosy with several cases of elephantiasis.

Mr Thomas Benarkuu, the Deputy Chief Executive Officer in-charge of Operations, MIHOSO, explained the project had already trained 10 community volunteers and 26 health workers who reached out and sensitized the communities.

The project implementation would contribute to progress towards the Universal Health Coverage and skin health for all as well as enhance health and wellbeing, eliminate discrimination and exclusion, deepen human rights, and improve participation and productivity.

World Kidney Day: Medical Officer urges public against mixing, drinking locally distilled liquor

People who mix and consume varieties of locally distilled alcoholic drinks exposes themselves to kidney diseases and renal failures, Dr Afram Aikins, the Medical Officer at the Abesim-based Rafchik Clinic, a health facility has warned.

He said although alcoholism in general, had serious health hazards in the body system, those who mixed and consumed varieties of hard liquor pressured and malfunctioned the kidney.

In an interview with the media at Abesim, near Sunyani to mark this year’s World Kidney Day (WKD), Dr Aikins, therefore advised people against unhealthy lifestyles such as excessive intake of alcohol, substance abuse and self-medication.

He spoke to the media on the sidelines of a kidney screening exercise the Clinic organised for some clients and residents of Abesim to mark the day.

WKD is a global healthcare event celebrated on the second Thursday in March, every year since 2006, intending to bring together patients suffering from kidney diseases and promote awareness of “amazing” kidneys by educating the people about their role in maintaining health.

The global theme for this year’s celebration which fell Thursday March 14, is “kidney health for all – advancing equitable access to care and optimal medication practice”,

It focuses on raising awareness of the inequalities in kidney disease treatment, and encourages collaborative efforts to improve access to appropriate treatment for everyone affected by the disease.

Dr Aikins said bad eating habits, especially late diet, lack of body exercises and the consumption of sugary and j***y diets were unhealthy practices, and advised everybody to stay away from that, saying those who failed to do so were at high risk of contracting kidney diseases.

According to Mr Daniel Yeboah, a Nurse in-charge at the Kidney Care and Dialysis Unit of the Clinic, kidney diseases could also be genetic, diabetic and hypertensive patients had the risk of contracting the disease.

He therefore advised everybody to have enough sleep and rest, reduce intake of food with high carbohydrate and sodium content, and do regular medical checkups and laboratory blood examinations.

He mentioned uncontrolled and sugar taste-urine, elevated blood pressure and less urine outputs as some of the immediate signs and symptoms of kidney diseases, and advised those who observed those signs in their body systems to visit nearest health facilities for medical examination and care.

Dr Louis Anto, the Chief Executive Officer of the Rafchick Clinic said the facility now had two dialysis machines, and advised patients to visit and access the machines.

He also advised the public against the bad practices of self-medication which often worsened the conditions of some patients.

Dr Maxwell Beyere Dery, another medical officer at the facility, said it was untrue that kidney diseases or renal failures were linked to family curse or wizardry, and advised patients who developed symptoms to stop visiting prayer camps and shrines for cure.

He also advised the public against excessive intake of energy drinks, and also control their appetite for herbal medicines too, saying all those practices exposed people to high risk of kidney and other related diseases in the body system.

Duayaw-Nkwanta Zongo residents laud MP’s efforts to control flooding

Residents at the Duayaw-Nkwanta Zongo in the Tano North Municipality of the Ahafo Region, have expressed joy about the construction of a steel bridge and storm drains in the area.

The old and dilapidated wooden bridge, according to the residents, was a death trap, and therefore, expressed their appreciation to the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Tano North constituency for her development initiatives.

Dr Freda Prempeh, the MP for the Tano North constituency is funding the construction of the two storm drains which had 34 metres and 36 metres each and the bridge in the neighbourhood.

The residents told the media during a visit the projects had brought a great relief to them because the poor drainage systems and uncontrolled flooding in the neighbourhood exposed children to dangers and risked their lives.

They said they were extremely overjoyed about the progress of work, and expressed the hope the projects would be completed as soon as possible, as the rains set in.

Dr Prempeh, the MP visited the site, inspected the project, and pledged to complete it by April this year.

“It is my hope and vision to try as much as possible to complete as many as possible the projects I have initiated in the constituency. I just handed over about 20 boreholes”, she stated.

The MP also promised to ensure that the majority of development projects she was putting up in the constituency were completed and handed-over before her exit as an MP in January 2025.

Ameyaw-Cheremeh calls for a formidable front to 'break the eight'

Mr. Kwasi Ameyaw-Cheremeh, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Sunyani East has called for a formidable front among the rank and file of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Constituency to enable the party to win the Election 2024.

He said unity remained paramount of the party desired to break the eight in the next general election, and urged the party supporters to bury their differences and forge ahead in unity.

"We must unite as one constituency for the 2024 election to break the eight. It is more than achievable and with unity, we will break the eight and maintain the Parliamentary seat to", the MP stated in a victory message.

The NPP delegates maintained the MP as the Election 2024 parliamentary candidate in the constituency primary held at the Pastoral Center in Sunyani.

Due to certain internal challenges, the Sunyani East constituency could not participate in the NPP’s parliamentary primaries held on Saturday, January 27, but the national leadership of the Party resolved those challenges and re-scheduled the primary for March 9.

But, in a keenly contested party primary, conducted and supervised by the Electoral Commission (EC) at the Catholic Pastoral Center in Sunyani, Mr Ameyaw-Cheremeh secured 460 out of the 799 valid votes cast to beat his only contender, Ambassador George Kumi, a former envoy who had 339 votes.

Mr Ameyaw-Cheremeh commended the delegates for the confidence they had reposed in him again to lead the party in the Constituency in the Election 2024.

On his part, Ambassador Kumi also urged his followers and party members to support the MP to maintain the seat in the next general election.

Sunyani East NPP delegates maintain Ameyaw-Cheremeh

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) delegates in the Sunyani East constituency at the weekend, maintained Mr Kwasi Ameyaw-Cheremeh, the incumbent Member of Parliament as the Election 2024 parliamentary candidate.

If the MP wins the 2024 parliamentary elections, then that would be the fifth time Mr Ameyaw-Cheremeh, also the Board Chairman of the Bui Power Authority, managers of the Bui Generating Station would represent the constituents in Parliament.

Due to certain internal challenges, the Sunyani East constituency could not participate in the NPP’s parliamentary primaries held on Saturday, January 27, but the national leadership of the Party resolved those challenges and re-scheduled the primary.

As at the time of filing this report, the atmosphere in Sunyani was greeted with joy and ecstasy, as hundreds of the overly-excited NPP party delegates, and supporters took to the principal street of the capital to jubilate.

Clad in party paraphernalia, some of the delegates told Sky News they believed the incumbent MP had done a lot and therefore, deserved their endorsement to lead the NPP to maintain the constituency parliamentary seat in the Election 2024.

Mr Abubakar Yakubu, the Sunyani East Communications Officer of the NPP commended the delegates for the high level of political maturity and civility they exhibited and expressed appreciation to the EC for free and fair elections.

He also expressed appreciation to the police for the sense of professionalism they demonstrated in maintaining law and order.

06/03/2024

Madam Justina Owusu-Banahene, the Bono Regional Minister on Wednesday re-echoed the need for Ghanaians to strengthen the prevailing peace, unity and social cohesion to consolidate the gains of the nation’s fledgling democracy.

As an election year, the regional minister said the nation could not compromise her prevailing peace, hence the need for everybody to uphold the values of tolerance and political pluralism.

“Under no circumstances should we allow political interests and the ethnic and religious chauvinism to polarize our front as people with common destiny to deny us of the very professional knowledge, skills and experience needed to build a formidable economic, self-reliance and worthy nation”, she stated.

The conduct of free and fair elections, she added, remained paramount, as it not only reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to democracy, but also solidified “our democratic credentials within the African Sub-region”.

“This democratic exercise is not just a routine event, it is a profound expression of our collective will and a demonstration of the maturity of our democratic institutions

She, therefore, called on Ghanaians to approach the electoral process with a sense of responsibility, ensuring that the voice of every citizen was heard and respected.

By upholding the principles of transparency, inclusivity, and fairness, we strengthen the foundation upon which our democracy thrives, setting a shining example for our neighbours in the pursuit of a better future.

Mad Owusu-Banahene made the statement when she addressed a parade of school children, teachers, artisanal workers, fan clubs and other organisations to mark Ghana’s 67th Independence Day celebration at the Jubilee Park in Sunyani.

On the theme “our democracy, our pride”, the event was also attended by representatives of the various political parties, Heads of Departments and Agencies, traditional authorities and civil society groups and actors.

“Our pride lies not only in the existence of our democratic institutions but also in our collective commitment to uphold the values that we represent. We must protect the freedoms that define us, ensuring justice, equality, and inclusivity for all citizens”, the Regional Minister stated.

“The need for a united front to build a healthy state notwithstanding the socio-political pluralism cannot be compromised whatsoever”, she added, stressing “with abundant natural resources and the human resources capacities available to us, we cannot disappoint our future generations”.

There is therefore the need to create the enabling environment to produce what is needed and the required worth for the economic transformation of the country.

“We have every reason to be proud because Ghana chose a democratic path of governance and there is ample testimony of the positive dividends we have reaped over the past three decades since we ushered in the 4th Republic.

“Our practice of the tenet of democratic governance and the continuous overhauling of democracy have christened Ghana as a beacon of democracy in Africa”, Mad Owusu-Banahene stated, and therefore, urged Ghanaians to jealously guide and sustain and preserve the unity, strength and purpose to build a prosperous nation.

Mad Owusu-Banahene highlighted the devastating effects of illegal mining and logging, and perennial bushfires, and called on everybody to contribute towards a successful fight of the social canker.

She admonished the students to avoid all forms of social vices and embrace them and inspired them to remain obedient, hardworking and disciplined.

Coalition bemoans unlawful sales of government vested lands in Sunyani

The Coalition for Good Governance and Accountability (CGGA), a Sunyani-based social movement, has bemoaned what it described as ‘unlawful sale of government vested lands’ in Sunyani, the Bono Regional capital, to private developers.

According to the movement, the sales of the government vested lands were a breach of the Article 257(2) of the 1992 Constitution, and asked the relevant state institutions to check, investigate and bring the situation under control.

“It is utmost sadness and disheartening that a government/state land situated adjacent to the SDA Hospital along the Fiapre road near the Sunyani residency, walled and painted has been sold to a private developer and a known businessman in Sunyani and about six trips of gravels have been deposited on the land waiting actual construction”, the Movement stated.

Addressing a news conference in Sunyani, Mr Atta K**i, the Convener of the CGGA said the check revealed, “the said land was earmarked for future development to be embarked on by the Social Security National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) years back”.

“It is however sad that a state land that has been carefully kept for future development in the interest of the nation will be dealt with in this manner” he stated.

Flanked by other executives of the Movement, Mr K**i said further checks showed “the price value of the said land was devalued and sold to the private developer in a very cheap and bizarre circumstance”.

He, therefore, called on the private developer, to as a matter of urgency abrogate whatever agreement “has ensued between the buyer and the other state agency or person”, saying “we are reliably informed that some state officials were allegedly corrupted to induce the sale of the said land”.

Mr K**i said the Movement would be taking further actions, including but not limited to legal actions, demonstrations, and petitions to stop the unlawful sale and development of state or government-vested lands in the capital.

“Our social movement remains resilient and focused on our objective in championing a good course for the development of our dear region and country by extension”, Mr Vincent Antwi Agyei, the Communications Director of the CGGA stated.

He therefore called on the media and the general public to collaborate with the movement to help stop the unlawful sale of state lands in the supreme interest of the region.

“We have over the years been exposing some government appointees and state officials including public servants who pursued their personal and parochial interest against the public good”. Mr Agyei stated, saying “we will never relent in highlighting the ills in our society and expose wrongs in our communities and Ghana as a whole”.
