The United States has returned 23 looted artefacts to Nigeria.

"These artefacts are intrinsic to the culture that produced them. A people ought not be denied the works of their forebears. It is in the light of this that we are delighted with today's repatriation."

The items are part of thousands of artworks known as the Benin Bronzes stolen from the Benin Kingdom in 1897. Nigeria is set to receive more such artefacts from The Netherlands, the UK and Germany.

. 9 # Ghana Education Ministry
The Education Ministry has denied media reports of food shortage in some Senior High Schools (SHS), particularly in the Volta Region.

The Ministry in a statement said such reports are untrue, explaining that “all Senior High Schools in the country have received adequate supply of food items”.

Heads of schools have warned of a possible closure of schools following the unavailability of food items to cater for the student population.

But the Ministry said its checks reveal adequate supplies have been made to the schools in question.

“The Ministry however takes cognizance of recent disruptions within the food supply chain, but assures parents and guardians that they have been addressed”, the release stressed.

In a separate interview, the Head of Public Relations at the Education Ministry, Kwasi Kwarteng mentioned that, the National Food Buffer Stock Company Limited has supplied enough food to schools across the country.

“The public is respectfully encouraged to disregard claims of food shortage in our SHSs. The Ministry can confirm that our agency–Buffer Stock– distributed food to all schools in the country. Every school is adequately resourced in terms of food to at least sustain them until the next supply is made. So those media reports of food shortage are unfounded.”

The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation has renewed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) which was signed in 2019 with the Gambia National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC-Gambia) to promote and intensify cooperation between the two countries in the oil and gas industry. The MOU is expected to run for three (3) more years until 2025.

Commenting on the MoU at the signing ceremony, Mr. O-A Danquah, Chief Executive Officer, noted that “GNPC-Ghana is excited to share knowledge from its operations offshore and on-shore to enable GNPC-Gambia to begin its offshore and onshore operations on a sound footing”.

Under the renewed agreement, GNPC–Ghana will support GNPC-Gambia by providing technical capacity building in petroleum research, exploration and production techniques, information systems, and data management.

The two parties will also share expertise, equipment, and personnel along the oil and gas value chain.

The Managing Director of GNPC–Gambia, Mr. Yaya F. Barrow expressed appreciation and gratitude to GNPC–Ghana for lending expertise to the GNPC-Gambia during the first phase of the MOU.

He also extended an invitation to GNPC-Ghana to advance the cooperation through joint ventures with the GNPC-Gambia in its frontier exploration efforts.

He was accompanied by a five (5) member delegation from GNPC-Gambia, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Ministry of Petroleum Energy.

The relationship between GNPC-Ghana and GNPC Gambia dates back to 2018 with GNPC-Ghana providing secondment opportunities to the technical staff of GNPC-Gambia and assisting with the development of the Human Resource capacity of GNPC-Gambia.

A total of nineteen (19) GNPC-Gambia staff are currently on rotation secondment in various departments at GNPC-Ghana.

Background
GNPC-Ghana was established as a State-owned entity to operate on a commercial basis.

The corporation was given legal backing through two main statutes, i.e., PNDC Laws 64 and 84.

The corporation’s vision is to become a leading global oil and gas company whose operations have a profound impact on the quality of life of the people of Ghana

GNPC-Gambia is the National Oil Corporation of the Gambia established under the GNPC Act 2014 of Gambia.

The corporation envisages playing a leading role in the intensification of exploration efforts in the highly prospective MSGBC basin that has registered recent massive finds in both oil and gas in the westernmost of West Africa.

GNPC–Gambia looks forward to becoming a leading operator in the eventuality of commercial discoveries.

The National Organiser of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye popularly known as Nana B has taken on the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) for stationing its officers at shops, restaurants, and other businesses to record sales of products for tax purposes.

He argued that the strategy would have been justified only if it was targeted at businesses that ample evidence shows have been evading or under-declaring their taxes

The NPP National Organiser in a statement said the “widespread approach of stationing revenue officers at businesses is counterproductive, oppressive, repressive, and suppressive.”

“We are not in normal times – businesses and individuals are bearing the brunt of the twin global crisis and their concomitant economic agony – and the least expected from GRA is to police traders whom no tax evasion findings have been made against.”

“In this day of technology, GRA should adopt welcoming and pleasant ways of revenue collection strategy that engenders revenue assurance. This strategy is weak and lame since Revenue Officers stationed at these shops and businesses can be compromised to aid owners to evade or under-declare their taxes. GRA should rather strive to reduce human contact in revenue collection and employ technological solutions to take taxes from businesses,” he added.

In his view, the Public Relations unit of GRA is dead.

“Paying taxes is not a pleasant thing and for that matter, a responsive PR approach must be adopted to educate the tax-paying population about their programmes and activities.”

The GRA on October 1, 2022, launched the Electronic VAT system to block leakages in revenue collection as well as ascertain the actual income of businesses.

But the Chinese retail company has failed to fix their tax electronic collection system to enable the GRA to access the data.

So far, three branches have been shut down by GRA officials – two on the Spintex Road and one at Tema, Citi News reports.

Managers of the shopping malls reportedly got wean of the information and closed their facilities.

Managers of the malls reportedly got a wind of the action and closed their facilities even before the Enforcement team arrived at the premises.

Notwithstanding, GRA used the Commissioner General’s tape to seal off the entrance of the shopping centre.

Joseph Annan, the Accra Area Enforcement Manager, told the media that the action has become necessary after many attempts to get the company to comply with the law failed.

He said the GRA will extend the exercise to all branches of China Mal in the country.
