39th CompassSport Cup Final 2023

The 2023 CompassSport Cup Final took place on Sunday 19th November 2023, in the Forest of Dean organised by Bristol Orienteering Klub in very challenging wet and muddy conditions after heavy overnight rain and two very wet previous weeks, but excellent organisation and good technical courses which kept competitors off the paths for much of time made for a great day of orienteering for getting on 900 competitors.
It was really good to see clubs embracing the weekend for a club gathering, either travelling down by coach or making a weekend trip and taking in the nearby North Gloucestershire Orienteering Club event on the Saturday, notably Northern Navigators Orienteering Club and Pendle Forest Orienteers Page who report 40% of their club competed.
Eleven clubs competed in the Cup competition with South Yorkshire Orienteers retaining their crown. Forth Valley Orienteers were in second place and hosts Bristol OK third. Both South Yorkshire and Forth Valley had six and seven Juniors respectively in their scoring teams showing the great value of Junior development in those clubs.
Twelve clubs competed in the Trophy competition, which was won by Swansea Bay Orienteering Club by a margin of only one point from previous holders Interlopers Orienteering Club - Edinburgh. Wimborne-Orienteers were in third place.
The Golden Boot winners for the fastest split from the last control to the Finish were Louise Adams from Interlopers and Dylan Jenkinson from South Yorkshire.

Some readers are having issues reaching Prof. Kez Latham's survey on Vision in Orienteers over 40s. Try using this link here: https://aruspsych.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_1RnXlze2Czkg2qi
The more Orienteers who can complete it, the more useful the results will be :-)
I think it will be live till the end of the year.
Later in 2024 we will report on the findings of Kez Latham in CompassSport Magazine of course.

Orienteering is an unusual sport in that it requires clarity of distance vision to navigate the terrain, and of near vision to read the map. Presbyopia affects everyone over 45 years, requiring different vision corrections for distance and near vision. What vision correction(s) do presbyopic oriente...

Issue 5, Volume. 44 (aka OCT23) went to our printers Stephens & George Print Group in South Wales this morning. It should arrive on doormats in the UK in 7 days. The cover by Jiří Czech celebrates Ralph Street's World Cup Sprint Gold this summer at Orienteering World Cup Czechia Round 2. The last GBR World Cup win was 2015 by Cat Taylor in Arosa, SUI.
The issue includes coverage of the 32nd WMOC 2023 - Slovakia, 4th Lapland O Week, Euromeeting 2023 in Dunblane/Stirling hosted by Forth Valley Orienteers, a warm-up event for World Orienteering Championships 2024 Scotland.
We have the CompassSport Individual, Club and Regional Rankings, back after a Covid break - age and gender adjusted - and the winner might be a surprise for some - clue: its someone from a NWOA club but not the past winner who you think!
Informal Events column is a super exciting CluedO format, Know Your Class Leader contains a Edinburgh Southern Orienteering Club member and a Southern Navigators Orienteering Club member.
This year's Photo-O is included with your chance to win your entry to Croeso 2024 in South Wales!
And of course, there is much more with the other usual columns and features.
