🚴‍♂️ Less than a week to go! Sheffield is gearing up to welcome top international cyclists, including Olympic and Tour de France champions, for the Lloyds Bank Tour of Britain men’s race passing through Sheffield on Thursday 5 September 🏆

The 166-kilometre (103-mile) stage will start from Arundel Gate in Sheffield city centre, marking the first time that the race has been to the city since 2006, with the uphill finish coming on County Way in Barnsley, the first time that the Lloyds Bank Tour of Britain Men has visited the town.

A new record label managed entirely by students - believed to be the first-of-its-kind in the UK - has been launched by students at The University of Sheffield 🎶

Octagon Records publishes new music from student artists who otherwise wouldn't have the opportunity to have their music heard.

First established last September, in less than a year the label has already forged a number of partnerships with leading music organisations, including Hudson Records, Tramlines festival and HMV.

The idea behind the initiative is to help aspiring student musicians break into the music industry. Tapping into the city of Sheffield’s rich musical heritage, which has provided some of the biggest names in world music, the label is working to provide mentoring opportunities and help student musicians develop hands-on skills in music promotion, distribution and event management.

Thanks to generous alumni donations, the label has been able to purchase high tech equipment for making music videos, live streaming, promotional campaigns and materials for online platforms.

Octagon Records is supported by Sheffield’s music department, but is open to all aspiring student musicians at the University, regardless of their degree, in what is believed to be a UK first. The label also receives support from Hudson Records, a professional music label releasing music worldwide with artists such as Seckou Keita and Bellowhead. This provides invaluable experience to the students who get to connect with industry professionals.

The Grade II listed site will undergo a full restoration to become an ambitious new venue for arts and culture in the city centre, contributing towards a growing cultural community across Fitzalan Square and Castlegate. Sheffield’s next landmark is almost here! 🌟

We’re thrilled to share a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the incredible new artwork being created for the Sheffield & Tinsley Canal. British artist Alex Chinneck, known as ‘Art’s Master Illusionist,’ is crafting a stunning 13m long, 6m high steel narrowboat sculpture with a dramatic loop-de-loop design. This piece celebrates Sheffield’s industrial heritage and the historic waterways of Tinsley, featuring traditional canal boat colours and signwriting.

Chinneck says, “It’s extremely exciting to share the progress of this project, which we’ve been working on for several years. Without question, this will be my most complex and challenging artwork to date.”

Co-funded by British Land and E.ON, this ambitious project will soon be installed near Meadowhall, offering a unique viewing experience from both the towpath and passing narrowboats. Get ready for this remarkable sculpture to take its place in Sheffield’s vibrant art scene this September!

The Sound of Sheffield: Fringe at Tramlines 2024 Line-Ups Revealed Across 30+ Venues 🎸 🎶

Supported by Sheffield BID, the Fringe at Tramlines is set to return from Thursday 25th July to Sunday 28th July, and promises a jam-packed celebration of music throughout Sheffield. This year’s lineup is staggering, with over 30 venues and hundreds of artists participating, contributing to the city's largest and most exciting music event. From free outdoor stages to intimate indoor performances, The Fringe at Tramlines will transform Sheffield into the ultimate musical playground.

With a wide variety of performances spanning multiple genres, there is something for everyone. This year’s highlights includes at Devonshire Green with Highway Child and Sheffield Beatles Project. Ripton Lindsay's 'Jamaican Carifolk Dance' and the Sparkle Sistaz DJ are guaranteed to lift the atmosphere in this large outdoor stage.

Other notable mentions include performances at Delicious Clam, featuring dream-pop band Faint Paint and the head-banging psychedelic rock sounds of Buzz Lightyear. At Yellow Arch Studios, the diverse lineup showcases acts like Tom Killner, bringing his soul-drenched Southern rock and Americana, and Santiago Kings, known for their guitar-driven heavy rock quintet. Meanwhile, Sidney and Matilda's "The Other Festival" promises an exciting array of talent, including the genre-swerving sounds of Seas Of Mirth and the Sheffield post-punk royalty of Femur. With these and many more, the Fringe at Tramlines is truly making Sheffield the epicentre of live music this summer.

Established Fringe at Tramlines venues like the Frog & Parrot, West St Live, Bungalows and Bears, The Green Room and Maida Vale have all dug deep to provide a full schedule of artists across the weekend whilst later on nightclubs like Hope Works and Plot 22 will provide blistering DJ sets into the early hours.

Another new edition is an outdoor stage on the Cathedral Forecourt which hosts the Chill Foo Front 30 Year Anniversary Street Party on Sat 27th July. Supported by the Sarah Nulty Power of Music Foundation, the event will feature BBQ food, pizzas, open mic sessions with selectors TDogg, Scarcha, Vybz, Chillout, General D, Juiceman and Vector, and performances by various dance crews.

'Freddie’; the Lyceum Theatre’s iconic statue returned yesterday 🎉
Sheffield Theatres announced the reinstallation of the Lyceum theatre’s famous statue. On Monday 22 July, the figure of the Roman messenger god Mercury – affectionately nicknamed by theatre staff as ‘Freddie’ – was reinstalled atop the dome of the Lyceum Theatre.

In 2023, a condition report on the statue was carried out by Sally Strachey Historic Conservation Ltd., concluding that further inspection and repairs were required. Having undergone his rehabilitation, ‘Freddie’ returns to his spot in Sheffield’s iconic skyline this summer.

John Bates, Operations Director of Sheffield Theatres, said:
“We are very fond of Freddie as he is a key visual of the building which we all know so well and love working in. Having undertaken the condition report, we’re glad that we are able to action the results in order to keep our buildings in the utmost condition, whilst also honouring an icon of our city’s famous skyline.”

Norma J Hird, Chairman of the Sheffield Lyceum Theatre Trust, added
“The Lyceum Theatre Trust is delighted to welcome the Mercury statue, lovingly known as ‘Freddie’, back to his rightful place on the top of the Lyceum Theatre building. He has undergone an extensive restoration and repair and we hope he will continue to look out over the city for many years to come.”

The statue of Mercury was crafted by Wendy Wall in 1990. The figure stands around 12-foot-tall and was made using fibreglass with a layer of paint on the outside containing copper flakes. The current statue is a replica of one which adorned the Lyceum during its early years as a theatre. It is unknown when the original statue was removed, or whether it still exists, although there is suggestion that it was detached sometime after the Theatre Royal (formerly opposite the Lyceum theatre on Tudor Square) suffered a fire in 1935 and was demolished officially in 1936.

Sheffield Craft Brew Festival arrives at Kelham Island’s Peddler Market this September.

Taking place on Friday 20 and Saturday 21 September, Sheffield Craft Brew Festival is your ultimate bottomless craft beer festival where you can expect to sample the best British craft beer from independent and micro brewers with five hours of unlimited craft beer included in the ticket price.

Breweries confirmed to be in attendance so far include Cloudwater Brew Co, Jimbrew Brewing Company, Kynn Nanobrew, Blackjack and Copper Beech Brewing Company. More will be announced in due course.

The festival will feature a diverse range of beers, from hoppy IPAs and rich stouts to sours, saisons and everything in between, all carefully selected to offer a unique and unforgettable tasting experience.

Brewers from each brewery will be pouring their own beers at the festival. This gives you the opportunity to talk to the brewers about their beverages and find out more about the brewery and how they make their delicious craft beers.

For non-beer drinkers there will be a good selection of cider and prosecco, all included in the ticket price.
