Bettison's Folly or Bettison's Tower
Bettison's Folly is a tower in Hornsea, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. Also referred to as Bettisons Tower and the Forgotten Folly, it was built some time between 1829 and 1853 by William Bettison.

At the time, Bettison was a Hull based brewer who built the folly in what was then his garden. In those days communication was by sight, so his manservant would ascend the tower at the usual time his master returned from work, see him descending Southorpe hill and run down the tower to ensure "dinner was served" as the master walked into the house.

It incorporates a cranked up flagpole, initially installed to convey private messages. During the Second World War the tower was an air raid look-out point and siren (Hull was the most heavily bombed UK city after London).

The siren was still in use in the late 1950s when a new siren was erected on the new firestation on Southgate. The Folly is decorated with locally made "treacle" bricks, highly fired for durability and subject to misshaping.

Nowadays, Bettison's Folly is a Grade II listed building and stands in the middle of a new housing estate off Newbeggin, the main street. It is rarely open to the public.

In 2011, Huffington Post included the folly in their unordered list of the "Top 10 Pieces of Folly Architecture."

One for our local shops and business owners šŸ‘‡

Weā€™ve had several reports of a rather strange scam in the last couple of weeks which has been targeting local shops.

The offenders enter the shop and say they have lost their bank card but present a barcode on their phone for the cashier to scan in order to get money from their account.

In some cases the offenders have used a ā€˜Card Oneā€™ barcode in the scam and others have claimed it is a ā€˜Pay pointā€™ barcode but slightly different approaches have been used elsewhere.

The offenders in most reports have been quite insistent and aggressive, attempting to intimidate shop staff into giving them the money they are asking for.

This is not a tactic weā€™ve come across before but itā€™s an important one to be aware of, particularly as it seems to be targeting shops across the county.

If you or your business have been a victim of this scam, please ring 101 to report it to us.

Letā€™s spread the word and stop others falling victim! šŸ—£ļø

We are still receiving lots of reports from people buying off websites and not receiving what they have ordered. Fake selling sites are popping up all over. Heres what we recommend
(1) Check if the site has a UK address listed on its "contact page" if it doesn't we recommend NOT to buy off these sites.
(2) if it does have a UK address listed check the postcode with the business name on a google search to see if they are listed as a verified google business. If they aren't we recommend NOT to buy off these sites.
(3) A lot of these sites will advertise that they take paypal until you try and pay with paypal. We recommend NOT to buy off these sites.
(4) A landline tel number should be listed on the website. Search the tel number on Google to see if it is for the business site you got it from. If there is not one listed or google doesn't find it under the business website we recommend NOT to purchase from these websites.
If your are unsure send us a message with the website address and we will let you know if we would recommend them or not.
People of Scarborough please stay safe and don't get caught out..

Thanks

IT'S LIKELY TO BE CLOSED FOR 'SEVERAL HOURS'

Storm Eunice is set to bring winds of around 60mph to the area and Humber Bridge officials have said they can't put a time frame on the closure.
"Due to very high winds forecast today the Humber Bridge is to close to all traffic from 1.30pm.
"We canā€™t say when it will reopen but itā€™s likely to be closed for several hours.
