New Review! Garbage + Lucia & The Best Boys at Bridlington Spa.

Garbage manifest on stage like the oncoming storm, crashing through a number of songs before stopping for breath: it’s a strong and confronting opener with #1 Crush, Godhead and Paranoid in quick succession.

When Shirley Manson finally pauses to speak to the crowd, she enthuses about the beauty of the coastline and surroundings here at Brid-ling-ton-Spa – and relishes rolling those syllables around with some degree of glee.

Appearing like an ethereal warrior princess flanked by a trio of casually dressed, beer-bottle drinking chaps, Lucia and the Best Boys were a worthy opener for Garbage in the stunning setting of Bridlington Spa – a venue whose beauty was acknowledged by both of the night’s bands. Hot on the heels of our fantastic first gig featuring the Zak Parlby Quartet we are proud to promote our second gig:

Bonneville!

Raised on the cobbled streets of York, UK, Bonneville is proudly a Yorkshire feminist artist, versatile in multiple genres. She captivates audiences with her bold, expressive vocals and forthright lyrics. Her music—a blend of soul and indie—has not only featured on BBC Introducing and BBC6 but also earned the accolade of Tom Robinson’s Fresh On The Net 'track of the week.’

A familiar face on Yorkshire’s live music scene, Bonneville has performed at notable venues like The Polar Bear and The Brudenell, as well as various festivals across the North.

Her latest album, "New Lady," weaves powerful themes of friendship and freedom into catchy melodies, drawing comparisons to artists such as Self-Esteem and Amy Winehouse. Fans of Duffy, Rebecca Ferguson, and Cat Burns will find her music especially appealing.

Connect with Bonneville on Instagram or explore her tracks on Spotify and Apple Music. 🌟

Saddened to hear that this year's Headland Festival is called off.

Hosting and running events is tough right now. Like, really tough. Whilst we haven't ran any under YCG, most of us here have been involved in the event industry as a profession at some stage and we completely understand the territory every venue/organiser/promotor is under right now.

Big love to Jim and the team. We look forward to learning more about future plans and how they plan to move forward.

New Review! Richard Hawley at Scarborough Spa, with support from James Bagshaw of Temples.

Richard Hawley completed his final show of his tour right here in Scarborough, marking the close of his 13-date stomp around the UK and Ireland.

The only Yorkshire date for a Yorkshire born music hero, Hawley is no stranger to the sea-side town having played the venue in previous years - perhaps more famously, the artwork for his fourth studio album ‘Coles Corner’ featured the renowned Stephen Joseph Theatre.

Following the crowd, I set off on my journey to Scarborough Spa’s Grand Hall. The walk down is always magical. There aren't many places you could walk barefoot on the sand pre- and post-gig. A real grounding and placing myself in that feel good place. Gig ready and zoned in.

There was a real mellow feel. A real seriousness about what was about to unfold. Each gig goer 110% committed to watching Hawley doing his thing – nothing else.

To get to him, they had to get past the one and only support act of the evening – James Bagshaw. Armed with a beautiful Gretsch White Falcon, he warmed the crowd with tracks including The Palms, Caramel Eyes and my key favourite, Resurrection of a Souvenir. The gentle fingerpicking and that ‘indie-folk' feel throughout his set led him to his closing number, Bring Back The Weekend.

If the name sounds familiar, then it should. Bagshaw has led great success fronting the psychedelic band Temples since 2012 first being spotted by Jeff Barrett (Heavenly Recordings).

With the crowd well and truly warmed it was time for the man himself. Hawley walked on to an incredible reception, opening straight in to She Brings The Sunlight, with Two for His Heels and Prism in Jeans to follow.

Looking around the crowd, and coming back to my previous comment – there was absolute dedication in the room. Hawley had engaged them from the off. His banter and witty anecdotes were punchy, just like his music – but what else would you expect from this Sheffield born singer-songwriter?

Whether because they were now 13 dates deep in the tour, or just down to the pure experience Hawley brings to live performance, this set was well oiled and a great journey through some of the nine studio albums he’s released. Of course, the bulk of the set from his most recent album, In This City They Call You Love.

Finishing with Heart of Oak, Hawley and his band made us work hard for the encore. Not that I’m complaining, oh no. It made the closing three tracks feel more worth it. Opening the encore with People, following to I’m Looking for Someone to Find Me and finally, most fittingly, The Ocean to close the show.

Hawley fans won’t have to wait long to see him live again. He’s playing a number of festivals this summer including Beautiful Days and End of The Road, as well as a huge hometown show at Don Valley Bowl, Sheffield, on 29 August 2024.

European fans won’t have to wait too long either, as the European tour kicks off in September of this year.

From the second I first set foot in the premises, the general buzz and hubbub was indication that these sessions at Beckview Studios have become a definite local calendar event (scratch that - there was something of an energy in the garden area before I even entered the building).

Firstly we had acoustic duo Ruth Scott & Tom Small. They'd travelled up from Hull to caress our eardrums with a stripped back sound which was equal parts tender and soaring.
Voice and guitar strings combined in sweet harmony to give wing to the pair's tales of married life, friends no longer here, and (in the case of 'Third Eye') fielding awkward romantic overtures at the swimming pool - this one in particular had the audience impressed with its cheekily winking storytelling and vocal acrobatics.

Next up was our second Hull-based Ruth of the evening, Ruth Toynton - a rising singer- songwriter purveying gorgeously jazz-inflected beats and soulful vocal prowess.
Her songs at times make me feel like I'd been transported out of the (admittedly lush) environs of Beckview to some tranquil alien beachscape ('3am') or sun-dappled glade ('Songbird').
Then there was Ruth's most recent single - 'Beautiful Disaster' - which was certainly beautiful but far from a disaster, especially in this most intimate of settings. It fit neatly into her repertoire and also encapsulated all aspects of her mesmerising sound.

Lastly, we had Scarborough's own Deep Sea Daggers, switching things up somewhat with their brand of grungy but anthemic indie rock.

Their smoothly sung verses drew us in all softly-softly, only for their dual-vocal choruses to bodyslam us with violent catchiness. And that guitar tone? Largely shimmering with just the right raw edge, a perfect counterbalance to the driving post-punk rhythm section.

Their more subdued version of 'Everything I Had' - a single which was recorded at this very studio - has particularly shimmied its way into my brain like a some sort of bruised but still beautiful aural squatter.

So, another great evening at Beckview Studios! As ever, it's both incredible and heartening to see a local studio offering top tier recording space to local artists such as those we heard tonight, all of whom richly deserve this sort of exposure and experience. Can only hope they'll be putting on another one - the bar is set high!

What a line up! New show announced for Scarborough Spa next year.

Peter Hook & The Light
The Wedding Present
The Farm

Saturday 10 May 2025

Scarborough Spa are delighted to announce a brand new event, "Interzone". Featuring a host of bands, including The Wedding Present, Spear of Destiny, The Farm and headlined by Peter Hook and the Light.

---

English rock group Peter Hook and the Light formed by bassist and vocalist Peter Hook, formerly of the influential post-punk bands Joy Division and New Order, will be headlining the Grand Hall stage next May.

Back in May 2010, the band revisited Joy Division's seminal album "Unknown Pleasures" for a commemorative charity concert and since then, have performed live the repertoire of Hooky's bands, New Order and Joy Division. Hooky's dedication to his back catalogue has seen him move through "Closer", "Still", "Movement", "Power Corruption & Lies", "Low Life", "Brotherhood", "Technique" and "Republic to arrive at this point and having toured extensively with the band, The Light have come to amass around 600 shows in the decade since their first concert. Among the many highlights as Hooky reintroduced his early repertoire to a host of new audiences across festivals and concerts, including appearances at Benicassim, Kendall Calling, Primavera Sound and more as well as sold out gigs at many of the best venues across the world.

Leeds Pop Rockers, The Wedding Present, closely linked to the C86 scene, have charted a total of eighteen singles in the top 40 of the UK singles charts, including a historic run of twelve singles – one for each month – in 1992, which tied Elvis Presley's record for most top 40 hits in a single year.

From Liverpool, The Farm, are a British rock band formed back in 1989. Their first song to reach the top part of the UK singles chart was "Groovy Train". In late November that year, they released their most memorable song, "All Together Now" which instantly became a hit and peaked at number three in the charts in December 1990. It was on the crest of this wave that their album Spartacus reached No. 1 in the UK the following year. It's a recent return for the band who last year supported Cast on their August headline show at the Scarborough Spa.

British post-punk band, Spear of Destiny, were formed in London, England back in 1982 by lead vocalist, guitarist and principal songwriter Kirk Brandon.

Brought to you by JS Promotions, Interzone will see four brilliant bands rock the Grand Hall stage on Saturday 10th May 2025. Tickets on sale Wednesday 10th July at 10am.
