Teaser:
THE AUTUMNAL weather was awful; clouds rushing across the dark, overcast sky, swirling winds and torrential rain lashing the windows. At best described as tacky and long past its heyday, the hotel suite was equally depressing and, in a word, tired. Not that their surroundings mattered to the three men sitting around the small conference table littered with abandoned coffee cups and remnants of a sandwich lunch.
They had been there most of the day. The youngest of the three was the first to break what was becoming an embarrassingly protracted and uncomfortable silence.
“Let me be sure I’ve understood correctly,” he began. “You are asking if I’m okay with the idea of being shot. Have I got that right?”
Exchanging a look with his associate before answering, one of the other two said, “Yes, that’s the essence of it.”
“And you’ve got someone in mind have you to... you know... do it?”
“Yes, we don’t envisage that being an issue.”
“And I’ll be on my own, will I?”
“Yes and no: there will be others in the vicinity and, if needed, medical assistance won’t be far away.”
“If bloody needed?” the younger man, Callum, said with increasing incredulity. “You’re telling me I’m going to be shot! Of course I’m going to want medical bloody backup.”
“Quite understood. We’ll have to have your blood group… you know… just in case.”
“In case of what, exactly? And whilst we’re on the subject, where is it you have in mind for me to be shot?”
“Do you mean geographic location or specific part of your anatomy?”
“Both?”
The other man intervened. “Ah, well… we’re still working on location but, in answer to the second question,
most likely the lower abdomen – avoiding major organs, of course.” A further silence ensued.
“You’re serious about this, aren’t you?”
“Oh absolutely,” came the reply.
“Bit of an ask, don’t you think?”
“Trust: it ultimately comes down to trust.”
“Trust in who, precisely? The person who’s going to shoot me?”
Turning to his colleague, “Perhaps this might be an opportune moment to take a short break?”
