Market digests hotly debated Xylem-Evoqua combo

Xylem’s $7.5 billion acquisition of Evoqua has been one of the primary talking points at the American Water Summit this week, as market participants try to make sense of its impact on the industry.

The deal creates a new water powerhouse with $7.1 billion in revenues and $1.2 billion in adjusted EBITDA, and will boost Xylem’s industrial market exposure by more than a third.

Nearly $650 million was raised through equity and equity-like capital instruments into stand-alone water technology companies in 2022.

The record volume of capital inflows aligned with the rush to support solutions which contribute to solving the net zero challenge. Could climate adaptation be the next big theme for water technology investment?

While the single biggest chunk of cash was pumped into an atmospheric water generation company, Source Water, cash is also increasingly being deployed into companies which use satellite technology to optimise water use on the ground.

The differential in performance across the universe of thematic water funds was jaw-dropping last year. Will it lead to a shake-out in 2023?

There was a great disparity among the US$ funds, as some of the ETFs – and a couple of the actively managed strategies – ended the year alarmingly behind the pack.

Perception was everything last year for the EMEA region, as investor sentiment and reality clashed, leaving some names in the red. For those with the ability to invest in Saudi Arabian signatures, it was nothing short of a banner year:

- ACWA Power finished 2022 with a share price of SAR 152.00 at an annual change of 80.95%

- Alkhorayef Water & Power Technologies' share price was SAR 139.40 at an annual change of 36.13% as of Dec. 31st 2022

- Kemira's share price was €14.33 7.50% with an annual change of 7.50%

Weekly news: Israel may need to boost its desal capacity by 650%

The Middle East country will have to increase its desalination capacity from 500 million m3/year at present to 3.75 billion m3/year by 2065 if the population continues to grow at the current rate, according to a new paper published in Nature Portfolio's Clean Water journal.

That would require the construction of 30 additional desalination plants and an extra 11TWh of power generation capacity, all of which could have serious consequences for land availability and greenhouse gas emissions.

"I think we are now on the verge of a fourth age of American water. This is the age in which climate change takes over from the federal government as the main driver of investment in water infrastructure" - says GWI publisher Christopher Gasson.

"At a moment of change like this, it is necessary to be particularly attentive. That is why I want to ensure that we have all the right people in the room to rethink water in Los Angeles on 24-26 January."

For the first time in Israel – Mekorot will carry desalinated seawater from the Mediterranean to the Kinneret.

This is one of the largest infrastructure projects built in recent years, at an estimated investment of NIS 1 billion, with the objective of maintaining the Kinneret’s water level even in years when natural precipitation is below average.

Who will pay the cost of PFAS treatment in Europe – and how much will it be?

The EU wants to get serious on PFAS. With estimates of the cost of treatment ranging from €17bn up to €170bn, the question of who pays is becoming a political and legal minefield.

What will we get out of the UN conference?

"The fundamental problem is that water is not a good place for money [...] Asking institutions to lend more money to those who won’t pay it back, to give money to those who will waste it, and to support sanitation assets that people don’t value, is not going to solve the problem."

The world’s top 50 private water operators | GWI Magazine reveals the major changes at the top of the league table for private water operators serving more than 1.3 billion people.

Veolia regains the top spot after absorbing a chunk of Suez’s global portfolio earlier this year. Acciona and Aqualia move up, but the biggest risers were local players such as BRK Ambiental exploiting the fact that markets like Brazil are largely closed to international companies.

Weekly news: Severn Trent kicked off the interim results season for the UK water companies this week. While revenues over the period rose by 10.8% to £1,061.8 million, PBIT crept up by just 2.4% to £261.7 million, impacted by higher energy costs.

By contrast, United Utilities was unable to avoid a 22% drop in operating profit to £258.5 million, on revenues which were down marginally at £919.3 million. Read more here: https://buff.ly/3AJNJrT

"Back in August 2021 in this column, I predicted that by the end of this year, 70% of water utilities in high-income countries which serve populations of more than 300,000 would have set target dates for achieving net zero carbon emissions [...] it looks unlikely that the figure will be more than 22% by the end of this year [...] My hope is that COP28 in Dubai will see the global focus return to climate change mitigation rather than adaptation."

"The UN doesn’t get to set water’s agenda. It is set by economics and the environment [...] These are the real game-changers in water. We can look at them and despair, or we can look at them and see opportunities which didn’t exist in the pre-2022 world. Discussions about these opportunities will happen in New York in March next year, whether or not they are on the official agenda."

" The GWI Americas Water Index should be trading at a 20% premium to the rest of the market, not a 6% discount. What has gone wrong? As I see it, it is a problem of agility. Water utilities have been too slow to respond to the changing economic environment, and are also too slow to take advantage of the opportunities it offers. The resulting weakness is impacting the whole supply chain." Read Christopher Gasson's insight column here: https://buff.ly/3U7lPNJ
