Henry grew-up in St Ann’s, Nottingham, in the 1960s. At the time St Ann’s was an overcrowded area with poorly maintained and cramped council housing. The decision was made to rehouse the residents in new estates like Bilborough, demolish St Ann’s and rebuild. For Henry, this exodus to a new, unexplored land represented a stark change, and this episode explores his reflections on old St Ann’s, the new Bilborough estate, outside toilets, and doilies on coffins.

Huge thanks to TV, film, comedy and poetry legend Henry Normal for sharing these thoughts on his childhood with us. He was incredibly generous with his time, and it’s very greatly appreciated.

Ernest Harwood Greenhalgh was born in Mansfield in 1849 and went on to have a distinguished footballing career with the recently formed Notts County as well as playing for England. His family owned a successful business and it’s likely many current Mansfieldians would have relatives who’d worked for the Greenhalghs.

The Greenhalghs owned Field Mill, which would later become home to Mansfield Town FC, meaning the family’s history is intertwined with those of two traditional Nottinghamshire footballing powers.

Mary lived in Bulwell from her birth in 1878 through to her peculiar death in 1950. None of the locations key to her life and death are present in modern-day Bulwell, which seems to add to the enigma around her.

This episode features the Mason’s Arms, Bulwell, Hucknall, The Old Buildings, The Buildings, The Moon Hotel, Musters Road, 11 Rufford Walk, 8 Brookside, Colston Road, and Austin Street.

If you have an interesting tale or relative hidden in your family tree and would like us to investigate, please let us know by emailing [email protected].

We're Back!

Beeston's Pearson family are little-known outside of local history circles but as recently as the 1930s were highly influential in the area. Successful in business and very well connected, it seems the Pearsons sought to improve the lives of everyone around them.

This episode mentions, amongst other things:

- Boy's Brigade
- The Sherwood Foresters
- The Beeston Foundry Company
- The High Sheriff of Nottingham

A great story about Willie Wragg former Nottingham Forest player. What a varied life he led!

Athlete Willie Wragg is virtually unheard of nowadays but played a key role when Nottingham Forest won their first FA Cup in the Victorian era. A soccer journeyman, he went on to become a stage entertainer working alongside Charlie Chaplin and Stan Laurel in Fred Karno’s army.

Thank you to Diane Pearson for sharing her Grandfathers story with us.

An Escape from a WW2 prison camp and 200 mile journey - on foot - through a mountain range to safety sounds like something from a far fetched adventure story but it all happened to a young soldier called Stewart from St Ann's in 1943.

This is the signage that inspired Episode 1 of our podcast. It’s on Goose Gate in Hockley, and it reads The Wireless Stores. It’s unusual to have any old shop sign on display in Nottingham, and this one is hidden in plain sight. The episode is about wireless enthusiast Frank from Sneinton and his wranglers with the law.
