As always, Hinterland Issue 12 features four wonderful pieces of flash nonfiction by Adrian Tissier, Candice Kelsey, Michelle Spinei and Sam Gordon Webb. Each is a beautifully succinct piece brimming with character. We asked the authors about their piece:

Adrian: I love the way birds can connect us with the spirit of landscape and the seasons. My writing tries to express that immersive experience of connection.

Candice: This hybrid piece is an exploration at the intersection of chance, fate, and free will. In the shape of a dramatis personae, brief bios of each participant weave together the threads of one violent event. Hopefully, readers will wonder who is to blame.

Sam: Inspired by a friendship built during the darkest days of my life, their untimely death prompted this piece.

Our second headliner is by Joe Moran, who's piece is titled Noli Timere - "Do not be afraid" in Latin. We asked Joe about it:

"It's inspired by a dear friend of mine who died in the middle of the second Covid lockdown; it’s about navigating grief at a distance."

Munizha Ahmad-Cooke's piece, The Right Thing, features in Issue 12:

"It’s about my decision to end my marriage because of my husband’s alcoholism, despite the love I had always felt for him. Writing about addiction tends to focus on and come from the addict far more than the people around them, who need to seek their own recovery. I had been wanting to write something about living with a loved one’s addiction for some years but knew I had to find calm first.

"Written inspiration came from Deborah Levy’s The Cost of Living, mentioned in the piece, and Emily Pine’s essay ‘Notes on Intemperance’. The pain and tenderness of Pine’s simple sentence ‘It is hard to love an addict’ was a resonant cue for me."

Our latest issue - up for preorder now - is headlined by the fantastic Jarred McGinnis, one of The Guardian's picks for 10 best emerging writers. We asked him about his piece, the evocatively titled 'In Billions of Years the Sun will Swallow the Earth':

"It's about the strange entanglement of time that comes with being a parent, and me wanting to capture that in a form, writing, that is necessarily linear."

What is Hinterland?

Hinterland is a new magazine dedicated to publishing the best creative nonfiction writing.

Hinterland offers an answer to the question ‘what is creative non-fiction?’ by showcasing the best new writing across the fields of memoir, essay, travel and food writing, reportage, psychoscape, biography, flash non-fiction and more. Our pages bring together work by established, award-winning authors alongside new writers, many of whom we are thrilled to publish for the first time and whose work, we promise, will merit your full attention. Often, the pieces you’ll find in Hinterland will straddle the boundaries between strands and be difficult to classify: we see this as a strength. Hinterland intends to challenge, move, entertain and, above all, be a fantastic read.

You can find out more about what’s in the latest issue here, and order a copy or subscribe here.
