📚On the 30th of October, Studio GRRR (AKA Glen and Rebecca Robinson) will be giving a talk about their work and creative process for the Norwich Book Festival.

🩵In this illustrated talk, Glen and Rebecca will connect their past and present lives to show how art practice collides with commisioned work from a nine year collaboration with us here at Strangers Press. Using examples from twenty years of collaborative practice, twenty-eight years of marriage and thirty-two years of companionship, Studio GRRR will uncover the stories behind their creative partnership and life.

🩵Glen and Rebecca will show how they create vibrant book cover designs which capture the spirit of stories from Japan, Korea, Switzerland, Taiwan and Lithuania, demonstrating how the text influences and inspires the artwork and interacts unexpectedly through human experiences with crop circles, cemeteries, beloved cats, thirty year old street art in Amsterdam and family keepsakes.

This event is a MUST for anyone interested in design and literature, and for the many fans of the beautiful Strangers Press covers (trust us, we get a lot of comments about how amazing the chapbook covers are).

The event will invite you to take a step beyond the stories to meet the translators behind their journey into English.

🩵Daniel Joseph brings us a lively and hilarious translation of Machida Kou’s 'The God of the Word', a witty and wry retelling of the Kojiki (Record of Ancient Matters) completed in 712 CE.

🩵Jesse Kirkwood will talk about his translation of Takiguchi Yusho’s 'Kamachi' & 'Pictures of Her', two stories that consider the slipperiness of memory, partnerships, loss, and the stories men and women tell each other.

🩵Yuki Tejima has translated Wataya Risa’s 'Then Why Ask Me To Come', about a man at a lockdown BBQ about to be confronted over something he thought would remain a secret…

🩵The conversation will be chaired by poet and editor Erica Hesketh.

KANATA is published by Strangers Press in partnership with the University of East Anglia, the Norwich University of the Arts, the National Centre for Writing and GRRR Design, generously funded by the Yanai Initiative.

We are based in Norwich, UK, UNESCO City of Literature, and are dedicated to publishing the finest literature in translation in collaboration with the British Centre for Literary Translation, University of East Anglia, and Writers' Centre Norwich.

We take our name from The Strangers of the 16th century: a group of economic migrants from the Spanish Netherlands invited to help boost the nation's textile industry. Our logo references a Flemish gable -- in connection with their legacy -- and suggests transition from one state to another.
