🇱🇹 Introducing THE SLEEP OF BIRDS! 🇱🇹

“So it was that a happy historical coincidence came to be: s*x came into my life after the fall of the Soviet Empire…"

Last but by no means least in our series of five is two charged and psychologically intriguing short stories that experiment entertainingly within a contemporary gothic mode. In one, a doctor relates his dark fascination with a patient as things fall apart; in the other a s*xual awakening has tragic and transgressive consequences; both, in lucid prose, speak emblematically of shifts or breakdowns of social orders more broadly.

About the Author - Tomas Vaiseta...
(b. 1984) is a Lithuanian writer, historian and associate professor at the Faculty of History of Vilnius University. His debut collection of short stories ‘Paukščių miegas’ (The Sleep of Birds, 2014) and his novel ‘Orfėjas, kelionė pirmyn ir atgal’ (Orpheus: A Journey There and Back, 2016) were included in the top five books for adults in the Book of the Year selection in Lithuania. His latest novel, ‘Ch.’, was nominated for European Union Prize for Literature 2022 and was awarded the Jurga Ivanauskaitė Literary Prize 2022. It was also included in The List of Top Twelve Most Creative Books of 2021 in Lithuania. Vaiseta has written three historical monographs: ‘Nuobodulio visuomenė’ (Society of Boredom, 2014), ‘Vasarnamis’ (Summerhouse, 2018) and together with historian Valdemaras Klumbys - ‘Mažasis o: seksualumo kultūra sovietų Lietuvoje’ (The Little O: Culture of Sexuality in Soviet Lithuania, 2022). He lives in Vilnius.

About the Translator - Jeremy Hill...
is a translator, editor and writer. He has translated several novels and works of non-fiction (e.g. The Philosophy of Music; Neringa: An Architectural Guide) from Lithuanian into English and edited others. His translation in this book of short stories by Tomas Vaiseta follows his translation of the novel Orpheus: A Journey There and Back by the same author.

🇱🇹 Introducing TAXI DRIVER! 🇱🇹

“Rasma hated her dreams; they made her sick — she rested best when she fell into complete silence and darkness."

Fourth in our series is TAXI DRIVER, which follows Rasma - the driver of the title, who has a mysterious past, a mysterious present, an uncertain future, and a complex relationship with a 'double' - through a series of encounters personal and professional - some troubling, some comic, some profound - as she struggles with her sense of identity and belonging while trying to make ends meet.

About the Author - Jurga Tumasonytė...
is a prose author and interviewer. Her debut short prose book, ‘Dirbtinė muselė’ (Little Artificial Fly), received the Kazimieras Barėnas Literary Award. ‘Undinės’ (Mermaids), her second collection of short stories, was nominated as one of the best books of the year and won the Jurga Ivanauskaitė Literary Award as well as being listed in the Top 12 most creative books of 2019. She was awarded the Antanas Vaičiulaitis Literary Award for the short story Karalystė Kingdom and her debut novel, ‘Remontas’ (Renovation), was published in 2020. Her second novel, ‘Naujagimiai’ (Newborns), was published in 2023.

About the Translator - Sasha Wilde...
(they/them) is a Lithuanian sound and performance artist, vocalist, writer and a literary translator working and living in London. They have a BA in Tibetan, and an MA in Psychosocial studies. Sasha is currently writing a memoir on being accused of witchcraft and satanism as a teenager. 🇱🇹 Introducing: juvenilia! 🇱🇹

“That spring, as if by agreement, we got it into our heads that something should finally happen, something should change.”

The third title in our series is a selection taken from the memoirs of a youth spent growing up in a small town - its fascinations with fads, fashions, slang and bands; its successful/disastrous explorations of personal style and taste; what's cool, what's not cool; all pitched at the question and at times painful process of working out who we are in the world.

About the Author - Virginija Kulvinskaitė-Cibarauskė...
is a writer, literary critic and scholar, and editor of the review section of the Lithuanian culture magazine ‘Literatūra ir menas’ (Literature and Art). She has been publishing literary reviews since 2010. In 2017, she was awarded a PhD in Philology. She writes fiction – poetry and prose – under the name Virginija Kulvinskaitė. Her first publications of poetry appeared in 2007 and she is now the author of two books: the poetry collection ‘Antrininkė’ (The Double, 2017) and the novel ‘kai aš buvau malalietka’ (when i was a malalietka, 2019, appearing here in extracts as Juvenilia). Her work has been translated into English, German, Russian, Latvian, and Ukrainian.

About the Translator - Julija Gulbinovič...
translates between English, Lithuanian and Croatian, and from Arabic. She has translated Mate Matišić, Dubravka Ugrešić and the Serbian classic Miloš Crnjanski into Lithuanian, and Lithuanian EU Prize for Literature laureate winner, Daina Opolskaitė, into Croatian. In 2017-2018, she was part of the British Council and the Lithuanian Culture Institute’s literary translation mentorship programme and honed her translation skills at the UEA Summer School. She came to literary translation from studies of Lithuanian Philology and Croatian Language at Vilnius University, followed by an MA in Human Geography at Queen Mary University of London. She is also a poet.

🇱🇹 Introducing BODIES! 🇱🇹

“He asks what she thinks. She says it's hard to imagine the same thing he imagines. No matter how close you are, it is impossible to get into someone else's head.”

Another wonderfully varied selection of shorter stories this time featuring the tribulations of a successful filmmaker, a young couple who visit a nudist beach while on holiday and gain a new perspective, a woman who has lost her husband and an insurance salesman who finds himself obsessed with the voice of a client on the phone. All highly recommended!

About the Author - Akvilė Kavaliauskaitė...
is a journalist and prose writer. She was born in 1988 in Ukmergė (Lithuania) and graduated from the Vilnius University Institute of Journalism in 2011. In 2013, she became one of the creators of a popular TV social documentary, Lithuanians Around The World. Her debut novel Two Lives In One Summer (‘Du gyvenimai per vieną vasarą’) was published by Alma Littera in 2015. In 2020 she published a collection of short stories called Bodies (‘Kūnai’) with Balto Leidybos Namai which won the Lithuanian Book of the Year Award.

About the Translator - Erika Lastovskytė...
translates from Lithuanian and Italian and holds an MA in English Studies from Vilnius University. Her translations of short stories have appeared in The Happy Hypocrite, The Baltic Riveter, and the Lithuanian Photography Annual. She is a creator, developer and manager of various cultural programmes and has worked on projects such as the Summer Literary Seminars International in Lithuania (2011–2014) and the Baltic Women Writers’ Tour in the UK (2017). She is the winner of the prestigious Emerging Translator Mentorships Programme organised by the National Centre for Writing, and individual and educational grants from the Lithuanian Council for Culture.

🇱🇹Introducing DEATH & OTHER STORIES!🇱🇹

“...it suddenly rushed out onto the road, as if chased, and leapt straight into my arms. That is how I ended up taking it home...”

The first in our new series, DEATH & OTHER STORIES is an enthralling selection in which, among many other things besides, we encounter death as a supernatural beast-presence trapped inside a box, only to escape and cause mayhem in a local village; a darkly comic fable concerning a father and his son set in a world where children take on the forms of different animals as part of their 'formal education'; and a series of micro fiction 'stations', or vignettes, recounting different scenes, characters, or dreams on an implied narrative journey. The gorgeous cover design plays creatively with a number of these elements all at once, inside and out (to see more of the latter of which, you'll just have to buy it!)

About the Author - Vidas Morkūnas...
(b. 1962) is a published Lithuanian author of prose and poetry, also a literary translator. In 1992 he graduated from the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre (screenwriting). He has penned three books of short stories, one of poetry and published about 50 translations (from English, Polish, Russian, German). He is a member of the Lithuanian Writers Union and of the Lithuanian Association of Literary Translators. Morkūnas has also won several literary awards, his latest book ‘Pakeleivingų stotys’ (Wayfarers Stations) was shortlisted for the Book of the Year award and won the Institute of Lithuanian Literature and Folklore award for most creative book (2019). About the Translator - Kotryna Garanašvili...
is a writer, translator and interpreter working with English, Lithuanian, French, German, Russian, and Georgian. She is currently a PhD Candidate and Associate Tutor at the University of East Anglia and a member of the BCLT Research Group. Her research is funded by CHASE Arts and Humanities Research Council. She is the winner of the Emerging Translator Mentorship at the National Centre for Writing and has been awarded traineeships at the EU Council and the European Parliament.

KŪNAI: new chapbooks from Strangers Press!

We're super pleased to be able to announce our latest series!

KŪNAI means ‘bodies’ in Lithuanian and is our first ‘mini series’ of five chapbooks all available for preorder now at the special launch price of £22.50.

What's going on in Lithuania, you wonder? Well, judging from this little list, it's bursting with literary talent you'll be excited to discover, that's what, and it's high time the rest of us knew all about it.

True to the series title, these stories display a wide panorama of ‘bodies’; political, social, physical; they deal with corporeality, like collages made of details, symbols and impressions. Above all, though, they’re great short reads; like little shots of espresso for the mind - each their own experience, in series, but all building together into one beautifully designed set that’s sure to give you that Strangers Press literary buzz of cultural curiosity...

Our VERZET series was a bit like taking a short visit home, for us: our name, Strangers Press, comes from The Strangers of the 16th century - a group of migrants from the then Spanish Netherlands who enriched the culture and technology of the East Anglian region and whose architectural style even informs our own logo. We like to think this set is a kind of symbolic re-tracing of that journey.

VERZET showcases the work of eight exciting, new - to the English language - writers from the Netherlands.

🌀Anyone else feeling a little unsteady this week...?!🌀

'Unsteady Earth' by Marie-Jeanne Urech, translated by Andrea Reece

His father still warm in the grave, Bartholomé de Ménibus leaves his traditional farming village in a bucolic valley and sets out to discover what lies behind the only mountain he has ever known: endless other mountains. Behind each, fantastical Swiftian worlds inhabited by Quixotic characters all convinced that their lifestyle is the only way to face the future. Dairy cows with portholes sewn into their rumps offer consumers 'a window on the product'; elderly folk are abandoned by the roadside as their families drive on through traffic jams to holiday destinations; pigs are farmed in 125-storey skyscrapers. In this quirky, satirical novel, sparkling with surreal humour and inventiveness, Marie-Jeanne Urech adopts the codes of epic medieval quests and epistolary tales of the past as she skips lightly but purposefully towards the essential question: What kind of Earth are we leaving for future generations?

Get cosy with 'Elvezia's House', a touching tale in which a Moroccan boy is left in the care of Elvezia, an elderly Swiss widow who lives in an alpine village in the Ticino mountains. Through his tender childhood and teenage years, the boy grapples with the various challenges of puberty and racism while supported by the loving relationship of his adoptive mother, Elvezia, Helvetia – Switzerland.

But when her neighbours don’t return from their trip abroad, the cars vanish from the roads and the birds stop singing outside, every aspect of her life is thrown into question...

Against the backdrop of the changing seasons, Rut Plouda deftly interweaves descriptions of the daily routine on her remote Alpine farm with the pain of her disabled son’s early death but also the redemptive joy of his short life. In this deeply moving and personal story, Plouda watches from the window as, despite everything, nature continues to renew. Like running the farm, her grief gradually becomes an everyday reality and life, like the coming and going of the swallows and the turning of the acer leaves, goes on.

Now you are familiar with a little history of ‘The Strangers’ of Norwich, you might find it interesting to learn that our logo references a Flemish gable, in connection with the Strangers’ legacy – its design suggesting transition from one state to another. We’re particularly interested in the idea of translation as a form of cultural exchange – that cultures might learn things about each other, in multiple ways, through the process.

You’ll find a few other namesakes in our hometown including the fantastic Strangers Coffee, with one of their cafe’s fittingly situated next to this wonderful gate into Strangers Court. The perfect spot for reading a book (or three?) with a a damn good cup of coffee ☕️📚

🥩'The Tourist Butcher' is a grimly comic tale about a serial killer who prepares his victims for a culinary dish, while 'Memories in Tin Foil' follows the nightmares and existential crises of a psychology student who receives a slice of human brain as a gift from a biologist roommate.

📺’Thank You For Being With Us’ features two newly translated short stories. In one, a father and son, barely on speaking terms, meet for the first time in years in a television studio for a live broadcast to discuss a book the son has written about their failed relationship. In the other, a troubled vo**ur watches from his window as people come and go from a local massage parlour while contemplating his life.

🏘The short stories in ‘Shelter’ address a number of important themes facing Dutch, and indeed European, society today; class, social mobility, multiculturalism, prejudice, loneliness, and urban sprawl, all in a prose style that is simultaneously atmospheric, topical, sympathetic, and frequently wonderfully descriptive.

Elm Hill being the heart of where the Flemish newcomers congregated, living and working in crowded tenements to the rear of the Merchant’s houses - Here we find the books at the appropriately named 'Strangers' Club'.

In 1928 the original building was reconstructed to become the home of the club, which was formed at the time by six local gentlemen with the purpose of entertaining ‘strangers’ visiting the city. They remain the occupants to this day, and have welcomed royalty, ambassadors, politicians, authors and other influential visitors.

'Reconstruction' by Karin Amatmoekrim is translated by Sarah Timmer Harvey. Ranging from the speculative ‘Jacques d’Or’ to the fiercely political ‘The Radical’, this collection is a journey through enjoyably contrasted considerations of what kind of world we are collectively creating.

Could there be a more scenic spot to pick up one of the texts? This bench, situated within the Tudor beauty of Elm Hill, is the perfect reading spot. Elm Hill is the most famous street in Norwich, it was also the heart of where the early ‘Strangers’ congregated.

Have you ever explored Strangers' Hall? One of Norwich’s most historic buildings, this magnificent Tudor house has been home to many of the city’s leading citizens since the 14th century. Accommodating some of the early Flemish newcomers as tenants, it is from this connection that the house was later to become known as Strangers' Hall.

📚 As the collage of houses suggest on its beautifully crafted cover, 'Reconstruction' is a journey of contrasts, all building to create considerations regarding our shared world. The backdrop of Strangers' Hall serves as a musing on the expertly crafted 'Reconstruction'. Surrounded by tattoo parlours, brunch bars and headshops, this fourteenth century building is humorously telling of our societal footprint that we are collectively creating. Strangers' Hall is as beautiful as it is creepy, another similarity to Amatmoekrim’s writing, and Harvey’s translation.

As UEA welcomes it's freshers to Norwich in the coming weeks, we thought we’d explore the city though some of the history behind our namesake, the ‘Strangers’ - the Dutch and Flemish refugees who settled in Norwich in the 14th Century. We’ll also be sharing some of the stories from our Dutch Chapbook series VERZET amongst the historic sights from our fine city.

For #KoreanMarch we will be spotlighting YEOYU - New Voices from Korea. Our YEOYU series is a selection of eight short stories translated from Korean. Released in 2019, It was a collaboration with publisher-activist and translation trailblazer #DeborahSmith, and features writers such as #HanKang and #BaeSuah, among others originally less familiar to an English-speaking audience. 〰️ 여유, YEOYU, means something like 'scope' and/or 'relaxed' in English; scope to be yourself, to follow your own interests. In some ways it means the opposite of being constrained by convention, more to be unbounded in such a way. In a sense, it means to be oneself but with enough 'left over' -- for others, maybe. The name is intended to capture the diverse range of themes and styles the series, and Korean literature far more widely, has to offer the curious reader and also to say something figurative and fun about the act and process of translation. 〰️ Stay tuned for more information about our exciting NEW series, IYAGI, edited with Anton Hur... Our Story

Translation imprint of the UEA Publishing Project. We believe in literary translation as a powerful vehicle for enriching cultural exchange.

We are based in Norwich, UK, UNESCO City of Literature, and are dedicated to publishing the finest literature in translation in collaboration with the British Centre for Literary Translation, University of East Anglia, and Writers' Centre Norwich.

We take our name from The Strangers of the 16th century: a group of economic migrants from the Spanish Netherlands invited to help boost the nation's textile industry. Our logo references a Flemish gable -- in connection with their legacy -- and suggests transition from one state to another.
