The George Lloyd Society

Lloyd played the cornet when serving as a Bandsman in the Royal Marines, giving him invaluable practical experience as an executant within a group of players.
His scoring for the brass section in his large-scale works is invariably idiomatic, impressively wrought and indicates a keen understanding of all the instruments’ range, character and versatility.

‘I just write what I have to write’. The artistic credo of George Lloyd conveys the directness and emotional honesty of his music. His music is distinctive and written with integrity. There is a remarkable consistency to his output, most of which was created spontaneously and without the incentive of a commission.

A wonderful review of our *July 2024* release, Robert Saxton- Scenes from the Epic of Gilgamesh from Guy Richards at Gramophone Magazine.

"Hard on the heels of the release of Kenneth Woods and the English Symphony Orchestra’s fifth instalment (devoted to Steve Elcock – 7/24) in their terrific ‘21st Century Symphony Project’ series comes the sixth, devoted to Robert Saxton. Once more it is full of captivating music-making, two remarkable and compelling compositions, magnificently played, but it may also be – as we move past the halfway point of the project – the most challenging issue thus far…

The larger piece, the five-movement Scenes from The Epic of Gilgamesh (2022) is another matter. This is the composition written for Woods and prompts the question: ‘What is a symphony?’ At one level, this is a closely argued suite derived from the great Mesopotamian text, around which Saxton had long wanted to compose a work. The musical language is broadly tonal and appealingly descriptive, its succession of vigorous sections and threnodies, and a finale worthy of Tippett at his best, echoing the trials of King Gilgamesh with his friend Enkidu. It is a haunting work, proving (were it needed) that musical impact or relevance need not come from extremes of sonority, harmony or style. The ESO respond with a fabulous interpretation, informed by immaculate ensemble and intonation (with some superb solo and duo playing along the way), one that stayed on loop in my player. Is it a symphony? In its scope, expressive élan and integration, I would say yes. Yet another thoroughly gripping, intriguing album, strongly recommended, as are its five predecessors."

Stanford's grand Te Deum Op. 66, debuted in 1898 at the Leeds Festival. A dominating feature of the Te Deum is its prominent use of the chorus, and the many fulsome sonorities Stanford was able to draw from the magnificent ‘instrument’ of the Leeds voices. © Jeremy Dibble

George Lloyd The Violin & Cello Concertos
Cristina Anghelescu violin
Philharmonia Orchestra

Anthony Ross, cello
Albany Symphony Orchestra conducted by David Alan Miller
The George Lloyd Society

It is significant that, when Lloyd turned his attention to writing concertante works for the violin, he avoided using full orchestral forces. His sensitivity to issues of balance and scrupulousness in scoring in his operas was matched by his determination that the solo instrument in his concertos should not be overwhelmed by thick orchestral textures.

George Lloyd The Piano Concertos
BBC Philharmonic , London Symphony Orchestra
Martin Roscoe , Kathryn Stott
The George Lloyd Society

George Lloyd approached the piano concerto form with imagination and individuality. His idiomatic solo writing offers a series of deeply personal attempts to reconcile time-honoured elements of display with symphonic preoccupations of long-range tonality, rhythmic energy and melodic growth. In sum, Lloyd’s four piano concertos constitute a compelling and distinctive branch of his creative legacy. © Paul Conway

His 25 Finest 1933 – 1951

Jazz pianist, singer and bandleader, Charlie LaVere (1910 -1983) was the catalyst who, with his band the Chicago Loopers, created some of the finest so-called ‘Dixieland jazz’ ever recorded. This is a compendium of seldom-aired tracks that warrants a place in any jazz collection.

Michael Doumas bass, Simon Hermansdorfer bass, Andreas Agler baritone, George Vincent Humphrey tenor.

This work began in the later part of D. F. E. Auber’s creative life. His work at this stage seems to be unusually touched by emotions of the heart, by passion and the expression of a true sensibility. He produced works remarkable enough to keep himself at the front rank of public esteem, a position he had held from the very beginning of his career.

SRCD434 Chamber Music of Kenneth V. Jones
Ensemble V, Vic McLean, piano
London Mozart Players Wind Ensemble, Brass Ensemble

To coincide with the 100th anniversary of his birth in May 2024 Lyrita is releasing a CD containing five premiere recordings, performed by soloists from the London Mozart Players.
Principal cellist of the Mozart Players Sebastian Comberti writes, “My first encounter with Kenneth V. Jones was in 2016 when our family moved to the village of Bishop stone in the Sussex Downs. Over the course of several months, I was able to learn more of Kenneth’s musical life. As soon as he mentioned having once written a string quartet, it was decided to programme the work. Such was the warmth of the reception upon hearing the work that it was decided to explore more of Kenneth’s chamber music output, and thus the idea for this CD was born. It gave me huge pleasure to be able to present to Kenneth the first edit of the current CD, just a few days before his death in December 2020. He was absolutely thrilled.”

SRCD420 George Lloyd
Requiem, Psalm 130
Matthew Owens conductor
Stephen Wallace, counter-tenor Jeffrey Makinson, organ
The Exon Singers
The George Lloyd Society

Lloyd produced the final score of his Requiem a month before his death. It is inscribed ‘to the memory of Diana Princess of Wales’. Compassionate, reassuring and even, at times, joyful, this is a conscious leave-taking on the part of the composer. His compact and cogent setting of Psalm 130 constitutes, arguably, his most fluently effective use of a ca****la choral writing.

A Litany, A Symphonic Mass
Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra , Leader Brendan O’Brien
Brighton Festival Chorus Chorus master Lazlo Heltay
Janice Watson, soprano, Jeremy White, baritone
Guildford Choral Philharmonia Orchestra
The George Lloyd Society

This 2CD set is the 3rd release in the new compilations of the George Lloyd recordings archive featuring A Litany and A Symphonic Mass, and has an approximate playing time of 1 hours 50 mins.

Conceived on a grand scale, Lloyd’s late choral works build fruitfully upon his previous experience in other genres. They share with his operas an innate lyricism, natural affinity with the human voice and feeling for the long line, while their structural balance, intensive working out of motifs and rich orchestral palette owes a significant debt to his prolific symphonic output.
