IMPORTANT❗️| This piece of advice could save your life … ❤️

In the early hours of Friday morning, Police received a silent 999 call where the caller used keypad prompts to confirm they needed police assistance and were not able to talk to them.

📱 Through button presses, the person was able to confirm they were physically injured and required assistance.

👮‍♂️ Police were able to track the location of the call to the persons home, where they found the caller was suffering with a medical emergency and they took him to hospital so he could receive the help he required.

📞 If you are in a situation where you are unable to speak to call operators when calling 999, you can press 55 to confirm that your call is genuine and you need police assistance.

Using keypad prompts, Police are able to communicate with you and work at tracking your location so officers can be dispatched to assist you.

Media Release: Monmouthshire County Council urges vigilance over parking scams

Monmouthshire County Council is warning residents and visitors to the county to be aware of parking scams in operation in the area.

The council have received reports of fake QR codes being stuck to parking machines in council-owned car parks across the region.

When scanned, the QR code takes the user to what appears to be a legitimate website. However, the council has learned that the website is a subscription scam – charging a joining fee and signing the user up for a diet plan subscription.

Monmouthshire County Council have also received reports of other such phoney QR codes taking users to other scam websites.

The authority stresses that none of the council-owned parking machines in Monmouthshire utilise QR codes as a means of paying for parking.

We advise residents and visitors to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity via My Monmouthshire or the Monmouthshire County Council Helpdesk on 01633 644644.

Media Release: Fly-tipper prosecuted

Monmouthshire County Council has successfully prosecuted a Newport resident for fly-tipping waste in Magor and operating without an appropriate waste carriers licence.
Mr Barla Price pleaded guilty to the offences and appeared in Newport Magistrates Court on the 12th of February 2025 for sentencing. The magistrates imposed a sentence of 18 weeks in custody, suspended for 12 months, and ordered Mr Price to pay costs of more than £1,700.

Fly-tipping is the illegal deposit of any waste on land. Fly-tipping can be dangerous, polluting land and waterways, costing taxpayers significant amounts to clear away. If you are caught, you can be prosecuted. The maximum penalty for fly-tipping is a £50,000 fine and/or five years imprisonment.

Monmouthshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Equalities and Engagement, County Councillor Angela Sandles, said, “Fly-tipping is a serious crime. It causes considerable eyesores, damages the environment and very substantial clean-up costs.

“We all need to be mindful of our duty of care to ensure we use a registered waste carrier when arranging for excess waste to be removed from our homes; if you don’t, you could be fined or prosecuted. Please remember:
C =heck (for a registered waste carrier)
A =ask (where your waste is going)
R =ecord (vehicle make and registration involved)
E =vidence (request a receipt for your records)”

A list of registered waste carriers can be found on the Natural Resources Wales https://naturalresources.wales/permits-and-permissions/check-for-a-permit-licence-or-exemption/?lang=en. If you have any doubts, call Natural Resources Wales on 0300 065 3000.
