This statue immortalizes the character “Grandma” from Giles’ famous comic books.
She is surrounded by other characters from the mind and strip of Britain’s greatest 20th Century newspaper cartoonist.
Grandma stands in Ipswich and looks up at the window where Giles worked for 50 years. He gained national fame drawing for the Daily and Sunday Express. He also drew war cartoons when he was rejected from enlistment after a motorcycle accident left him blind and deaf on one side.
Regarding Grandma, the Daily Express published The Giles Family Tree on the 23rd of November, 1951 and only had this to say:
“Apart from mentioning that there is always a faint sniff in the air of bull’s eyes, embrocation and brandy when grandma is around, the less said about her the better.”
Like any good matriarch, she’s a bit of a social deviant.
