Recent journey highlights include choro guitar music from ‘20s Brazil, an emotive estrada performance from the '50s Soviet Union, Japanese enka music from the ‘70s, and afrobeat rhythms from ‘90s Nigeria. That's quite an adventure!

The Turner Contemporary gallery has announced a new exhibition that will bring the work of an award-winning contemporary artist to Margate. ‘Feeling Her Way’ is a multi-disciplinary installation by British Afro-Caribbean artist Sonia Boyce, who was awarded the Golden Lion for Best National Participation for the project at the Venice Biennale in 2022.

‘Feeling Her Way’ centres on the vocal experimentation of five Black female musicians: jazz singer Jacqui Dankworth, neo-soul artist Poppy Ajudha, experimental vocalist Sofia Jernberg, folk-pop singer-songwriter Tanita Tikaram, and composer Errollyn Wallen. Through improvisational sessions at Abbey Road Studios Studios in London and Atlantis Studios in Stockholm, the group were encouraged to explore the potential of collaboration as a route to innovation.

An experimental interpretation of London on the cusp of the ’80s will screen at the BFI this week. ‘Codex’ is a 1979 film by director Stuart Pound, who took influence from the avant-garde music of the era.

The most remarkable quality of the film is its innovative editing, modelled on the repetitive and minimalist sounds of artists like Steve Reich and Philip Glass (whose music accompanies the film) and executed with musical and technical virtuosity.

An experimental film influenced by the avant-garde music of artists like Steve Reich will screen at the BFI Southbank in August.

We were touched to be a part of this powerful new film from The&Partnership and Pets at Home’s Vets4Pets, directed by Tom Green of Stink Films. A Danish arts collective caught our attention this week after we stumbled across footage from one of their fascinating subaquatic concerts. Between Music, who have been dubbed “the world’s first underwater band” by publications like New Scientist, premiered their ‘AquaSonic’ show in the Netherlands in 2016 after over a decade of preparation involving professors, divers and physicists.

‘AquaSonic’ sees five musicians and singers submerged in glass water tanks to perform a uniquely eerie and almost alien brand of music on specially-designed instruments. These include an underwater organ (or hydraulophone), a crystallophone, a rotacorda as well as percussion and violin.

Nestled in a Whitechapel back alley behind a terrace of Victorian house fronts is one of London’s best-kept secrets: a mid-19th century music hall that is one of the last of its kind still standing.

Wilton Music Hall, today known as the “oldest Grand Music Hall in the world” is home to around 300 performances from over 80 productions per year. Read more about it in our latest blog post - goldsteinmusic.com/wiltons-music-hall-london-goldstein/
