Contrastes Records... For the Elite Audience

Contrastes Records' goals go beyond simply creating a novel project in the world of classical guitar. Contrastes Records works towards redefining the aesthetical aspect pertaining to the receptive interpretation of guitar music. The performers and composers who work with our label, beyond possessing polished technique, have a vision of music and of the

guitar, and of their place in their cultural function today. Contrastes Records is not an elitist label, it is simply a label for an elite audience. The work of Contrastes Records is based on continuity, and on the continued development of the artists that we take on from the beginning. From this point of view, Contrastes Records it is not influenced by current fashions, or by a passing parade that comes and goes in the world of classical guitar or in contemporary composition. In addition, the importance we give to marketing and design allows for our CD's to stand out from the myriad of other albums on a record store shelf. Contrastes Records sublimates and searches to establish connections between sound images and visual metaphors that are out of the ordinary. Our design concept doesn't pander to the established tastes of the established market of classical guitar recordings. On the contrary, we are more interested in stimulating the market to evolve and to reinvent itself. Our designs accentuate emotions by means of images and musicological texts, where the aesthetic experience and the existential real-life experience meet. We fine-tune all aspects of our albums by tailoring each CD in a meticulous fashion. In order to do this, we work with highly qualified musicologists, photographers and graphic artists. Our records are distributed by Naxos International Inc and Universal Music.

One of the lasting musical achievements of Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887-1959) was his liberation of the guitar from its traditional stylistic boundaries. Whether done consciously or not, his guitar music recorded here, the Douze Études and his five Préludes, marks a turning point in the repertoire and future horizons of the instrument. It was probably little more than the happy conjunction of many disparate elements and influences, rather than a conscious attempt to change the path of history.

Villa-Lobos was born in Rio de Janeiro into a large, middle-class family. His father was an amateur musician and it was through him that Heitor began his musical activities, initially as a cellist. Family circumstances, including the premature death of his father, as much as his fascination with Rio’s popular music scene, led him to become involved performing in theatres and restaurants as a cellist and guitarist. He had taught himself guitar by the time this activity began in his teens. It was this experience that directed him towards the incorporation of urban popular styles into his later compositions for the concert hall and gave him a familiarity with the guitar that would give him incomparable guidance in forging his later compositions.

As a composer, Villa-Lobos was initially self-taught, drawing on diverse experiences from two distinct musical worlds, much more strongly separated by socio-economic class than is the case today. Villa-Lobos is also alleged to have travelled to vatious rural and uncultivated regions of Brazil during the decade before World War I and to have begun his activity of gathering indigenous and folk music in the areas he visited. As his personality as a composer began to take shape, he was assimilating music from the European classical tradition alongside indigenous musical sounds and the emerging urban popular music that superimposed elements from countless imported traditions upon music of European salons.

Queridos amigos,

ANDREA NOSARI
SHAULA

Writing music today is a difficult choice. Choosing the musical language that most belongs to us. Knowing if it is better to rely on past traditions or break all styles that recall harmonic and rhythmic concepts used for centuries.

I, in my music, consider it necessary to continue the speech of the composers who preceded us. I think it is important not to forget that the voice, il canto, is the first musical instrument that nature has given us, so it is not my will to eliminate this primordial form of expression. The traditional harmony is based on scales of seven sounds moving in the ‘900 on scales of twelve sounds.

Shaula wants to be an album that does not break the link with the past, but wants to continue a musical discourse that summarizes all the main features of the music. Singing, with simple melodies that are easy to listen to. Rhythm, with periods and formulas linked to recognizable patterns. The shape, with constructions linked to the traditional tripartite solution. Instinct and improvisation, with the birth of rhythmic and melodic elements linked to pure instinct. The idea comes from a simple playing your instrument, being carried away by an emotional component that is then developed giving itself formal and harmonic rules.

Every scale used in Shaula is six sounds. Hexaphonal scales that give rise to harmonic modules sometimes tonal, sometimes modal and sometimes rich in dissonances. The whole principle is elaborated in function of the musical emotional moment.

Pre to.. .. to End are two parentheses that want to open the album and close it. An introduction and an epilogue of improvised modules that summarize the harmonic aspects of all the songs.

VERA DANILINA
First prize 2022 "Michele Pittaluga" Guitar Competition, Alessandria (Italy)

Beyond dexterity, beyond virtuosity

With this debut recording, Vera Danilina impresses her seal on the world of the guitar with a decisive certainty that is thoroughly remarkable. It is not just that her fingers move with extraordinary precision and that her technique is faultless, but she also leaves no doubt that she is thoroughly commanding in every aspect of what she does. The repertoire she has chosen to record moves across the history of guitar music from the mid-eighteenth century until almost yesterday, woven together by dazzling virtuosity combined with the poise of a mature interpreter.

Contrastes Records is dedicated to offering fine recordings specialising in classical guitar music. Our recordings are primarily defined by the musical vision of the artists we decide to work with. What really interests us, beyond the artist's technique and command of classical guitar repertoire, is a world that is capable of breeding an interpreter and the artist's personal vision of music as a phenomenon.

DEMAIN DES L’AUBE (Bach, Berio & Bellini)
Thibaut Garcia, guitar
Contrastes records CR6201407

“Thibaut, who won last year’s First Prize in Seville (2013), is a real musical virtuoso; not in the superficial technical sense, but in the sense of integrity and care. He approaches pieces that are stylistically and structurally very diverse and heterogeneous”.
