Heathrow Airport recorded its busiest February for passenger numbers as demand for air travel exceeded pre-pandemic levels.

The west London airport said 5.8 million people travelled through its terminals last month.

It stated it achieved its highest February total even before the extra day due to this year being a leap year.

The airport recorded 5.2 million passengers during the same month last year, and 5.5 million in February 2019, before the coronavirus pandemic.

Sarah Everard’s family have said she was kidnapped and murdered by Wayne Couzens because he was armed with police powers he should never have had, after an official report revealed new and damning failures by police who missed his prolific sexual offending dating back almost 20 years.
The failures laid out in the report by Lady Elish Angiolini are worse than previously thought, and she concludes Couzens should never have been a police officer.

The former Post Office chairman has shocked MPs by claiming that the company's current chief executive Nick Read is under investigation.

Henry Staunton made the allegation at a hearing to discuss compensation payments to sub-postmasters at the centre of the Horizon scandal.

Alan Bates, the inspiration behind the ITV drama, told MPs the government needed to "get on and pay people".

The Post Office has been contacted for comment.

MPs were questioning a number of key figures about the pace of financial redress for thousands of sub-postmasters.

The MPs had been told by witnesses earlier in the day that an internal investigation was under way into Mr Staunton over his alleged behaviour while he chaired the company.

However, Mr Staunton alleged that there was actually an investigation into Mr Read.

He also claimed that within an 80-page document - a page of which he showed to MPs, with many lines redacted - it was said that Mr Read wanted to resign from the Post Office because he was unhappy with his pay.

Rishi Sunak has been urged to break his silence over a mounting Islamophobia row as senior Conservatives criticised the “dangerous” rhetoric of the party’s former deputy chair.

Lee Anderson, the MP for Ashfield, lost the Conservative party whip on Saturday after refusing to apologise for saying Islamists had “got control of” Sadiq Khan. Anderson claimed on GB News that the London mayor had “given our capital city away to his mates”.

The government has outlined further details of how it would redirect funding from the scrapped northern legs of the HS2 rail line.

Around £4.7bn from cancelling the high-speed routes is due to be handed to councils outside big cities in the Midlands and northern England.

Councils would be responsible for allocating funds to specific projects, in line with government guidance.

King Charles says Ukraine faces 'indescribable aggression'

He has spoken of the "indescribable aggression" that has faced Ukrainians since what he calls the "unprovoked attack on their land".

The unusually direct message seems to be a rallying call to keep up international assistance for Ukraine.

The King welcomed the continuing support from the UK and its allies.

At a time when there have been some doubts over financial and military aid for Ukraine, particularly from some politicians in the United States, King Charles commended the international support for Ukraine at a time of "great suffering and need".

King Charles spoke of the military training being provided in the UK for Ukrainian soldiers and praised the efforts of the country's President Zelensky.

As the war enters a third year, the King made no secret of his sympathies, hailing the "determination and strength of the Ukrainian people".

"Despite the tremendous hardship and pain inflicted upon them, Ukrainians continue to show the heroism with which the world associates them so closely. Theirs is true valour, in the face of indescribable aggression," said the King's statement.

The war in Ukraine has been close to the King's heart. In the early stages of the conflict he made a surprise visit to meet Ukrainian refugees who had fled across the border into Romania.

He has visited the Ukrainian community in the UK and on a state visit to France last year, the King told the Senate of the importance of a Ukrainian victory against Russia's "horrifying" invasion, so that "our cherished freedoms will prevail".

It's unusual for the King to speak so unambiguously about an international conflict and his comments reflect the strength of his feeling.

This latest personal intervention on Ukraine comes as the King is receiving treatment for cancer. He has stepped back from public events, but is continuing to work in his role as head of state.

The King's statement, which would have been made in consultation with ministers, follows the announcement by the UK of further sanctions against Russia.

Lee Anderson: MP suspended from Tory party over comments about London mayor

Former Tory deputy chairman Lee Anderson has been suspended from the party after "refusing to apologise" for comments aimed at Sadiq Khan.

The Conservative Ashfield MP told GB News on Friday "Islamists" had "got control" of the mayor of London.

Responding on Saturday, Mr Khan described the remarks as "pouring fuel on the fire of anti-Muslim hatred".

Losing the Conservative whip essentially expels Mr Anderson from his party in Parliament.

Just over an hour after Mr Khan's criticism, a spokesperson for the Tory party's chief whip Simon Hart said: "Following his refusal to apologise for comments made yesterday, the chief whip has suspended the Conservative whip from Lee Anderson MP."

Speaking on GB News Mr Anderson said: "I don't actually believe that the Islamists have got control of our country, but what I do believe is they've got control of Khan and they've got control of London… He's actually given our capital city away to his mates."

Pressure then mounted on Rishi Sunak to take action over the comments from the Ashfield MP after Mr Khan criticised a "deafening silence" from the prime minister and his Cabinet.
