You're invited! The Maritime Greenwich Photowalk with Michael Eleftheriades

On Wednesday, 2nd October 2024

LAST FEW PLACES AVAILABLE and the LAST DAY FOR BOOKINGS is September 23rd!

Location: Cutty Sark DLR Station: 10.00 am
Duration: 7 hours

Join Nikon Owner London Group coordinator Michael Eleftheriades on an incredible day to photograph the buildings of Maritime Greenwich and the Old Royal Naval College, described by UNESCO as the “finest and most dramatically sited architectural and landscape ensemble in the British Isles”. The day will include a general tour on arrival and a ‘behind-the-scenes’ tour in the afternoon. Probably the highlight of the day would be capturing the Painted Hall. Designed in the early 18th century, it features more than 3,700 sq. m. of baroque paintings on the walls and ceilings and is so breath-taking, it has been referred to as ‘Britain’s Sistine Chapel’. The final visit will be at Queen’s House, a masterpiece of 17th century classical design. As well as the Great Hall, the highlight would be the stunning Tulip Stairs, the first unsupported spiral staircase built in Britain.

Michael will be on hand throughout the day to offer guidance on using your Nikon camera and lenses.

Agenda:

110.00 Meet at Cutty Sark Station (walk commences at 10.15)
10.30 ORNC General Tour, incl. the Chapel and the Painted Hall
11.30 Free Time
13.00 Lunch at the Old Brewery Pub (*)
15.00 Behind the Scenes Tour
16.00 Queen’s House
17.00 Return to Cutty Sark Station

(*) Lunch is included in the price and you will have a choice of dishes, a dessert and a hot drink.

Registration:

The cost of the day will be £215 for non-subscribers to Nikon Owner, with a special price of £155 if you are a current Nikon Owner Electronic, Standard or Silver subscriber or £95 if you are a Nikon Owner Platinum, Gold or Diamond subscriber.
The price includes your entrance ticket, the two tours and lunch.

You are invited to: Nikon Owner Evening Webinar ‘Remembering Tigers’ by Margot Raggett Photography MBE, hosted by Michael Eleftheriades. Photo by Sarah Skinner.

Date: Friday, 18th October 2024
Start time: 7:00 pm BST
Duration: 2 hours

In what has become an annual feature for Nikon Owner subscribers, we are delighted to welcome Margot, who will be discussing the latest book in the Remembering Wildlife series, ‘Remembering Tigers’.

Wildlife photographer Margot Raggett MBE founded the Remembering Wildlife project in 2015 after seeing a poached elephant in Kenya. She set out to make a multi-photographer book to raise awareness of poaching and funds for the protection of elephants, and such was the success that a series was born. This year in October 2024 she will introduce Remembering Tigers, the 9th book in the series, which has now raised more than £1.15m pounds for conservation. In this talk she’ll present some of her own images from her travels this year, plus talk about the Remembering Wildlife series and some of the projects it has supported, as well as present the images from this year’s book.

You can see more of her work at https://margotraggettphotography.com/

Please note that this event will take place online.

Registration:

The cost of the event will be £15 per person, payable in advance, for current Nikon Owner subscribers; and £55 for non-Nikon Owner subscribers. Please DM us for more details.

Snippet from issue 84, an interview with Jill Furmanovsky Archive who has been a music photographer since 1972.

On the photo Noel Gallagher of Oasis s, with his signature Union Jack guitar, and photo of Jill Furmanovsky's Rainbow Theatre all areas pass.

This is what Jill said about her work as a music photographer:

“Shooting musicians on stage is a meditation; they are doing their thing playing to an audience behind you (if you are in the pit). I feel like I’m in a ‘zone’ when shooting live action, and allow the action seen through the lens to guide my actions, choice of lens, choice of where to stand and camera settings.” - JF

A little bit of Nikon history!

Did you know that the original Nikon F was first released in 1959? That's 65 years ago!

Here's a fragment from issue 70 of Nikon Owner magazine, p. 55 in TONY HURST GALLERY, written by Gray Levett:

The Nikon F High Speed Sapporo Camera

“[...] The original Nikon F, […] swiftly became the universally accepted 35mm SLR camera of choice for professional photographers the world over.

The Nikon F was available in either a chrome or black finish with a wide range of accessories including different finders, numerous focusing screens, motor drives, the F-36 and F-250 (a motor-driven bulk film back for shooting 250 exposures) allowing a maximum shooting speed of 4 frames per second (fps).

What sets the Nikon F even further apart from other cameras of the period is its unique ability to defy obsolescence. It is as though its designers anticipated every subsequent technological advance and provided for its embodiment. Offering complete interchangeability, not only of lenses but also of finder systems, focusing screens and camera backs, the Nikon F was clearly built with progress in mind. And of the many innovations achieved by Nikon, the Nikon F demonstrates the far-sighted ingenuity with which its designers met the challenges of progress.”
