It was such a great experience to overnight in the Plqn du Lac hut, on the Backdrop and UpGuides workshop. After a long day in the skin track, we had a communal meal of spaghetti (cooked by our Italian guest of course) and red wine (carried by the youngest splitboarder). is the way forward!

Leaving the city of Van tomorrow, after a week of splitboarding the surrounding mountains. It’s been a cultural voyage of food and friendship. A big thanks goes out to for his tireless efforts, in making us as welcome and as comfortable as he possibly could. The snows been mixed, but we’ve made some great turns and some of us even summited Mount Suphan, and we all leave with a new found love of Turkeys far east.

Travelling with the Backdrop Crew isn’t just about splitboardng, it’s about the people we meet on the way. Buying bread yesterday turned into an hour long cultural experience, tea was drunk to much laughter, and all without a shared language. The Kurds of Turkey’s far east are some of the most welcoming people we’ve met, their food (especially the bread) is delicious, and their hospitality is second to none.

Hard-packed, icy snow going up at least makes for great training conditions in our splitboarding workshop in the valley! Tips for walking and traveling in these conditions, more avi rescue training, and being somewhere just away from the lifts but pretty wild, herds of Chamois clambering around us and dramatic scenery. Hats off to
for sharing their mountain love and skills.

A long and tough day on the mountain today, with a kick arse fall line descent. It was a hot and long assent with many a lesson learnt. With every fall, kit malfunction and route choice we learn not just about adversity but also how we react to it. Big thanks to Fred for keeping a cool head and making/explaining the dos and don’ts of all things split.

Little inbounds tour, out of New boots held up well even if I did need a 2nd fitting this morning. The and liner and boots are finally a marriage made in heaven (well a boot oven with a load of foam pads, but you get my drift).

Be it a bizarre taste, or an abrasive language, with travel there’s always an assault on your senses. It can often feel like a slap around the face, but on occasion it feels like a lovers embrace and the beginning of a new obsession.

Ignoring the Demons

I FEEL ALONE, BUT I’M NOT.

A deep inner dialogue distracts my mind, so much so that I'm alone on the mountain.

Fatigue claws my mind inward, as I take each step as it comes. Just ten more, ten more steps until my next rest. Ten soon becomes twenty, thirty, a hundred and before I realise I'm no longer alone.

Hugs and smiles greets me at the summit, as we all marvel at our surroundings.

Connected, regrouped we're a crew again, but on the slog to the top, it was me that took each step, me and my inner demons telling me to stop.

ROADS - KACKAR MOUNTAINS OF TURKEY

Weak headlights sweep through an almost impenetrable darkness, glimpses of a snowmelt river in spate merge into rock face, as we speed through a never-ending valley.

It’s impossible to tell how far down the river is, as the longest and scariest unprotected switchback slides me sideways into a half shut door.

How is it the driver fails to see the fear in my eyes, or the colour drain from my face as the sickness rises within my gut?

God how I wish I was driving!

THE AIR’S SO COLD IT BURNS MY LUNGS.

I stride through old-growth forest, exhaling steam clouds like a coal-black locomotive from a wild-west shunting yard.

The day is crisp and dry, as are my eyes which drip near-frozen tears onto my cheeks. Yet I don't feel the cold.

I'm dressed for the season, but that's not the reason for my warmth, nor is the internal heat I'm generating with my uphill efforts.

It's the connection I feel to the forest, that keeps my mind from the cold, its as if I belong. The silence of a deep winter forest reassures me. I feel alive and unburdened, happy, passive, content, these are the reasons I leave my bed, in the dark, for a cold morning climb.

Winters almost here!
