MC Spotlight 002: MC GQ (@emceegq)
Often cited as every MC’s favourite MC, it’s perhaps no surprise that MC GQ is an undisputed legend within his field.
With his origins in sound system culture stemming from his uncle’s Manhattan setup in the early 1980’s, GQ soon had his own system, ‘Squadron HI-FI’, and began experimenting on the microphone, before eventually gravitating towards the then fledging ‘breakbeat’ sound.
‘AWOL’, with whom GQ had a residency with for many years, would be the event that would see him break through, as seen in slide four with one of his residency shows with Randall, 1992.
Since then, he’s featured on records by the likes of Grooverider,L-Side, Mickey Finn, Danny Byrd, Tek 9 and more, whilst consistently supporting a range of selectors down the years.
GQ’s respect and understanding for the music that he rides is what sets him apart, letting the music breathe and complimenting it win tandem.
“I think there's a beginning, a middle and an end in tunes. The beginning is where you intro, then you blend in with the music in the middle and roll it nicely at the end. At the end of the day, you always have to remember your place."
Do you say thank you when you get the Lynx Africa gift set???

Roni Size and Reprazent in New York, 1997:
In 1997, the year Roni Size / Reprazent's 'New Forms' was released, dance music was in the charts as much as the clubs. Crossover acts like The Prodigy, The Chemical Brothers and Leftfield took their cues from the rave scene, but were accessible enough for rock-oriented crowds and drive-time audiences. Drum & bass, however, was more mysterious.
'New Forms' was an album that marked a drastic shift, winning the Mercury Prize that year.
Motiv blesses us with a brand new tune for that Friday Summer feeling.😎
