From the archives: In May 2021 the International Olympic Committee warned that hosting the Games would be challenging and that the Tokyo Olympics – already postponed one year – might be cancelled. For athletes who had spent years preparing the disruption was a shock. And as lockdowns saw gyms, pools and sports centres close, new ways to train were needed.

Our 6 part home series on sportspeople whose lives – and living rooms – were upended by the pandemic

1. Maddie Hinch, hockey player
2. David Liti, weightlifter
3. Maria Angelica Bernal, tennis player
4. McKenzie Coan, swimmer
5. Felipe da Sousa Gomes, sprinter
6. Alexandra Ndolo, fencer

The democratic process has taken place and it's a landslide victory for change! And, indeed, this week we've seen change take place on an unprecedented scale. There's been a change in fonts. A change in text size. A change in paper stock. And, in a move that can only be described as revolutionary, a change to the almanac section.

Admittedly democracy at Delayed Gratification is more straightforward than it is at Westminster. What happened was that our art director Christian Tate proposed some changes and we nodded our heads approvingly. And while the head of state no doubt has strong opinions on magazine layout, we didn't have to travel to the palace to get formal approval for our redesign from the King (although an invitation would have been nice).

Christian Tate, who has masterminded the visual side of Delayed Gratification since the very beginning, tweaks the design of the magazine every year – but this time the redesign has been substantial. Over on our blog he answered some questions about what's been changed and why he did it.

Recipe for a DG infographic... Set out to research every current holder of a world cup title, in every sport there is. Start off at a decent clip with the big hitters then get bogged down finding authoritative sources for ringette, bandy and floorball. Begin design, complete it over a few hours. Job done! Then, a sinking feeling - we've left out korfball! Take a few minutes muttering darkly to yourself. Have a restorative cup of tea. Redesign the infographic, including korfball. Marvel at the little-remarked dominance of Sweden in sports that involve hitting things. Release infographic into the world, hopefully stimulating lots of stats geekery among DG readers

There are few news stories more divisive in the UK than that of Shamima Begum, who left London at the age of 15 to join the Islamic State. Last week she lost an appeal against the British government's decision to strip her of her citizenship, and so she remains effectively stateless, living in a Syrian refugee camp.

It's been five years since Begum, the last surviving Bethnal Green schoolgirl, was found in the al-Hawl camp by Times journalist Anthony Loyd. The reporter spoke to us a few months after his unexpected discovery and, in a passionate interview, expressed his view that a "huge populist swell of rage" had led to the then-home secretary Sajid Javid making the "hasty and opportunistic" decision to strip citizenship from an "indoctrinated young woman" who "left the UK as a child".

17/02/2024

Yesterday's news that Alexei Navalny had lost his life came as a shock, but hardly a surprise. Sooner or later, opponents of Vladimir Putin tend to end up dead – and Navalny was some opponent. Smart, brave, popular and irrepressible, the lawyer and anti-corruption activist – who was locked away in a penal colony north of the Arctic Circle on bogus terrorism charges designed to silence him – was the dictator's fiercest foe.

The first time the regime tried to murder Putin's arch-nemesis, it failed. In August 2020 Navalny was the target of a state-sponsored assassination attempt. Exposed to a substance similar to Novichok, he was flown to Germany for treatment. Yet only five months after being poisoned he was on a flight from Berlin to Russia, laughing at his favourite episodes of Rick & Morty while press photographers captured the calm audacity of a man who knew that these might be his very final hours of freedom. For incredible footage from his final flight, watch the 2022 documentary Navalny, which also includes an extraordinary scene in which he prank-calls a Russian spy into a confession.

In issue 42 of Delayed Gratification our associate editor James Montague spoke to Russian anti-corruption activist Vladimir Ashurkov about why Navalny got on that plane to Moscow – and why, despite everything the Kremlin could throw at him, he would not be silenced. We've just put the fascinating interview on our blog for the first time – and it's well worth a read this weekend.
