CrowdStrike — and its customers, and their customers — learned the hard way the ancient IT proverb: “Never push updates on a Friday.” And it’s how we all learned that our systems are deeply not resilient.

The CrowdStrike outage caused havoc last week. Here we look at what happened, what needs to be done next and the lessons to learn.

When AI comes up in a conversation about cybersecurity threats aided by artificial intelligence, it is tempting to ask, ‘Can we fight AI with AI?’ The 2024 RSA Conference certainly lauded the transformative impact of AI on cybersecurity. And, there are indeed many ways AI-driven threat detection can help spot viruses and malware, says Ev Kontsevoy.

However, AI is not the cure for cyberattacks. It may treat the symptoms, but it won’t treat the root cause. Here's why 👇

AI is not the cure for cyberattacks. It may treat the symptoms, but it won’t treat the root cause, argues Ev Kontsevoy in this opinion piece.

Printed circuit boards (PCBs) are the unsung hero of electrical and electronic systems and they’re everywhere. In simplistic terms, a PCB provides the physical connectivity that pings power and data signals between many of the components in your devices, acting very much like the track between two train stations.

The complex multi-layer construction of traditional PCBs means that they’re too complicated to recycle at scale, but a team at the University of Washington has developed a recyclable alternative, the vPCB.

Lee Grant reports on this story, here:

A team at the University of Washington has created vitrimer printed circuit boards (vPCBs) that make reusing components far easier

For Andrew Kay, Director of Systems Engineering APJ (Asia-Pacific and Japan) at Illumio, certain key principles hold true. To paraphrase our interview: trust no one, be transparent, and beware of data held in the cloud. Also, think like a submarine commander.

“If the boat springs a leak, a compartment or segment may flood, but the rest of the ship stays dry, secure, and afloat.” The submarine in question is your business, and the water attempting to flood in the ransomware attacker. You get the picture, we’re sure.

So why listen to what Andrew has to say? First, he has 20 years’ experience working with organisations across APAC to strengthen their cyber resilience. Second, as Director Systems Engineering APJ at Illumio, he designs and implements solutions that prevent attackers’ lateral movement, protect high-value assets and achieve compliance.

Here’s what he has to say about the latest developments in cybersecurity – and his suggestions on how to keep your data safe from attack. 👇

Lenovo has just pressed a huge, green and metaphorical button in Budapest. Thanks to 5,072 solar panels sitting atop two huge factories, its research facility can now be entirely powered by renewable energy.

To mark the occasion, Lenovo invited Tim Danton and 14 other European journalists to visit the facility. Here’s his behind-the-scenes tour, including some photos of the rooftop taken at no small risk. Those steps were slippery…
