Let me introduce you to: FRONT MATTER.

That stuff at the front of a book that isn't part of the main content. (And the sister of the stuff at the back of the book: Back Matter).

Additional book sections that you might find as part of the front matter in a non-fiction book:

📚 copyright page
📚 dedication
📚 foreword
📚 introduction
📚 author's note
📚 glossary (although more often this is found in back matter)

That's a lot of stuff to potentially include in your book before your reader even gets onto the contents page!!

Remember, you should only include any of the above if you want to and if you feel it adds value to your non-fiction book. Choose wisely.

First draft complete!

For anyone who hasn't been following along with my social media stories, last week I finished the first draft of my non-fiction self-publishing book. And it took me just under 90 days to do it!

Since then, I have been going through the manuscript (MS) doing my first round of edits, and have already sent the MS off to my two beta-readers for initial feedback. The first beta-reader already sent feedback and has proven that beta-reading is SUCH a crucial part of the process - she pointed out some blazingly obvious points that I needed to address!

My next steps:
📚 Finish the book cover
📚 Finish my own edits
📚 Incorporate the beta-reader feedback
📚 Send MS to my editor

This week we're celebrating Omar's 40th... So we're kid-free and logged off for the first time in probably about 18 months! But while he's out getting a sports massage (I've booked him all sorts of treats this week!) I thought I'd share this photo of us from our off-road experience earlier.

Omar doesn't get in the grid much but he is the author ads guy (seriously he spends so long analysing data to get the ads to consistently convert into book sales!) the numbers guy, (if you're a freelancer who we've paid this week you'll have noticed that I am NOT a numbers girl and that's why takes care of this part of the business!) the accounts guy and the guy that pays our authors.

He is also the much more patient (*ahem* soft touch) half of our parenting team and our kids are the luckiest boys to have Omar as their Daddy 😊

You could say there were more than three, but these are the three you need to know about for the sake of self-publishing your book. (Proofreading often gets classed as editing too, but for the sake simplicity, we'll keep them separate).

I've had a few pretty heavy writing days the last couple of weeks and my wordcount has rocketed! (My new record: 5000 words in one day!!)

The beauty of being a coach and writing about a topic that I know like the back of my hand is that I find it's actually harder to SHUT MYSELF UP than to not write.

It's important to remember that at this stage in the writing process, it's really not about quality. It's not really about quantity either, it's just about BRAIN-DUMPING; getting all that knowledge down onto paper.

I already did a kind of preliminary structure session so now I'm literally just picking a chapter title and writing everything I know about that topic. Then, during the first round of editing, I intend to turn it from waffle to actual constructive sentences that people will be able to read and learn from!

I'm aiming for approximately 40,000 words, because although there is a lot to say, who really wants to read more than that amount of words in a book about publishing... 🙄 Short, sweet and effective is my aim with this book - giving you a lot of what you need to hear and none of what you don't.
