The Dutch ruled temporarily Dutch colonised the island (1638-1710) before the French (1715-1810) and British (1810-1968) officially colonised Mauritius 🇲🇺

Top 5 Monuments in Africa.

1. Nelson Mandela Memorial - Howick, South Africa 🇿🇦
South african artist Marco Cianfanelli has developed a memorial to recognize the 50 year anniversary of peace activist and politician Nelson Mandela’s capture by the apartheid police in 1962. The shape signifies the leader’s 27 years behind bars for his efforts to bring equal rights to the once racially divided nation.

2. Archaeological Sites of Meroë - Meroe, Sudan🇸🇩
A group of about 200 pyramids, a relic of the Meritoc Kingdom that oversaw the area for over 900 years, built between 2,700 and 2,300 years ago. Meroë was the center of the Kush Kingdom (also spelled Cush), which ruled from the eighth century to the fourth century BCE.

3.Djingareyber Mosque –Timbuktu, Mali 🇲🇱
the city’s three greatest mosques — Sankore, Sidi Yahia, and Djingareyber which are now part of the University of Timbuktu. Construction on Djingareyber began when Sultan Mansa Musa returned from his pilgrimage to Mecca in 1327. Although the mosque is made of mud, straw, and wood, the structure has withstood hardships over 800 years.

The sacred Ark of the Covenant is believed to be housed here. As the most powerful state between Persia and the Byzantine Empire, the Kingdom of Aksum, which ruled from the first to the eighth century, was the center of ancient Ethiopia. Also, one of the greatest kingdoms on Earth alongside Babylon, Persia, Rome, and China, according to the Persian prophet Mani. Located about 100 miles southwest of the Red Sea, on the Tigray Plateau in northern Ethiopia, the area’s ruins, including many monolithic obelisks, are proof of the Aksumite wealth.
5. El Jem Amphitheatre, Tunisian 🇹🇳
Amphitheater in the village of El Jem is familiar was built in 238 CE during Imperial Rome. The freestanding structure of stone blocks without any foundation, measuring 485 feet across one axis and 400 across the other is seemingly modeled after Rome’s Colosseum. With a capacity of 35,000, El Jem Amphitheatre is believed to be the third-largest amphitheater ever built, after the Colosseum and one in Capua, Italy.

Happy Independence Day DRC Congo 🇨🇩 🎉🎉
Patrice Lumumba, the Congolese independence leader and first democratically elected Prime Minister, was executed on 17th January, 1961. He had been beated and tortured in a culmination of two assassination plots by the Belgian government and the CIA, ordered directly by President Dwight Eisenhower to 'eliminate' the charismatic leader, with the cooperation of British intelligence and Katangan authorities.

Just months before his deposition in a coup, Lumumba had delivered a powerful speech declaring the independence of the Republic of Congo and speaking eloquently about the struggle against racism and colonization, "an indispensable struggle to put an end to the humiliating slavery which was imposed on us by force."

The written text of this speech, delivered on 30th June 1960 in the presence of the Belgian King Baudouin, has been held in the archives of the Société Générale de Belgique. Ludo de Witte, author of The Assassination of Lumumba, returns to the events of the day in an article originally published in French in Le Vif/L'Express.

Few speeches have marked our history as much as that given by the Congolese Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba on 30 June 1960, the day that Congo achieved its independence. This speech could be considered the birth certificate of modern Congo, a country that was then emerging from eighty years of colonialism and which looked with confidence to its future. In Africa this speech is considered one of the key moments in propelling the continent onto the international stage. In the West, many have seen it as a call to arms opening up Belgian-Congolese hostilities, plunging this former Belgian colony into chaos. A chaos marked by the fall of the Lumumba government in 1960 and, the following year, by the assassination of the man considered in Congo to be the country’s first ‘national hero’.
