Examine your surroundings, what do your everyday occurrences reveal?

In the lead up to the November 3, 2020 elections in the United States, Teju Cole photographed his kitchen counter every day over the course of five weeks. Leaving the arrangement and presentation entirely to chance, what emerges is a surprising portrait at a time of social, cultural, and political upheaval.

We’re getting VERY excited for the release of Rosalind Fox Solomon’s ‘A Woman I Once Knew’ this Fall!

Over five decades, Rosalind Fox Solomon studied the evolution of her ageing body. ‘A Woman I Once Knew’ brings these self-portraits together alongside extended texts by Solomon, to form a unique work of autobiography, which points to the boundless possibilities of taking the self as subject.

Today we're thinking about two books that present groundbreaking visual narratives of the material and physical realities of contemporary commerce at sea: Laleh Khalili’s ‘The Corporeal Life of Seafaring’ and Allan Sekula’s ‘Fish Story’. Sekula’s landmark work explores the ocean as a key space of globalisation, and Khalili’s vital new essay traces the embodied lives of seafaring labourers, so often forgotten in enterprises of capital accumulation and the hierarchies that shape them.

🔗 ‘The Corporeal Life of Seafaring’ is available to order via: bit.ly/3VjwRDp. The Ebook version is available on Apple Books and Kindle Store.

Over two decades Gregory Halpern has been photographing in and around his hometown of Buffalo, New York. His lyrical new work, 'King, Queen, Knave' is a testament to the endless complexity of a place once familiar and unknown.

Releasing in October, 'King, Queen, Knave' confronts the complexities of his birthplace and contemporary America at large, seeing beauty intertwined with ugliness and redemption with dispute.

Unveiling the innovative and diverse work of Black women photographers active in the UK during the 1980s and 1990s, ‘Shining Lights: Black Women Photographers in 1980s–90s Britain’, edited by Joy Gregory and associate editor Taous Dahmani, provides a richly illustrated overview of a significant and overlooked chapter of photographic history.

Praise for ‘Shining Lights’:

✨ ‘[Displaying] the best of photography by Black female photographers [this book] gives voice to the work of an underrepresented community.’ The Guardian

✨ ‘‘Shining Lights’ is an impressive paean to those pioneering women who came before and created a myriad of magical images against a backdrop of social and political turbulence.’ DAZED

✨ ‘‘Shining Lights’ defies erasure. A Google search for many of these names yields limited results, telling us just how important this archive is for future generations.’ Aesthetica

‘With the photographs I tried to make them as truthful as I could and hopefully that element overcomes any exploitative element … I think there was a warmth to them.’ Richard Billingham

Earlier this year we released a new edition of Richard Billingham’s critically acclaimed 1996 book ‘Ray’s a Laugh’. Formed of starkly intimate images of Billingham’s often chaotic parental home under the effects of alcoholism and poverty, this new edition restores Billingham’s original vision for his deeply personal work for the first time.

The publication of this edition is accompanied by ‘Ray’s a Laugh: A Reader’, edited by Liz Jobey, which brings together critical commentary, interviews, and conversations mapping the work’s enduring legacy from the 1990s to today.

‘Gathered Leaves’ is a unique and ambitious book object comprising mini facsimile editions of four of Alec Soth’s most iconic publications – ‘Sleeping by the Mississippi’, ‘Niagara’, ‘Broken Manual’, and ‘Songbook’ – alongside an essay by Aaron Schuman spread across twenty-nine large-format postcards.

Playful and intriguing, this publication reflects Soth’s place as a master of the book form, and highlights resonances between the methods, subjects, and loci that have shaped his practice, making for an unmissable collector’s item celebrating a defining American photographer.

When you look at these two images from Paul Graham's new book, you might initially question whether they are photographs or paintings, as the blossoms appear delicately blurred with the effect of smeared strokes. In fact, Graham uses a digital camera set to an ultra-resolution mode that uses multiple micro-shifted exposures. In corrupting these images by the process of their creation, Graham plays with the flaws of his tools, leaving us with a meditation on the degradation bound to beauty.
