Ventile's first job was to save lives. During the Second World War, British fighter pilots were sent on reconnaissance missions, taking off from merchant ships. But with no way to land back on the ships, ejecting into the sea was treacherous and the outlook was grim: only 20% survived the cold water. The Royal Air Force realised they needed new clothing, and the Shirley Institute in Manchester developed the tightly woven material using extra-long staple cotton which proved a game changer for the pilots: once wearing Ventile, the survival rate jumped to 80%.

This fabric, initially made in the UK but now under the ownership of Switzerland-based Stotz & Co, has since found itself a home in some high-end global brands, keen to harness the power of the natural performance fabric. WSA caught up with Daniel Odermatt, Ventile brand director, to find out how the company not only keeps its relevance over 80 years but is also adapting to demand for eco offerings and embarking on a steep growth trajectory.

The latest issue of WSA is now available now!

How effective are at breaking down synthetic and making them and reusable? We look at the latest developments.

Cooking oils and fruit stones are among new raw materials being harnessed to make auxiliaries; we also examine agricultural waste, including from pineapple and banana, that could be spun into .

Under Armour and Celanese tell us how a multi-year R&D project has resulted in a stretch fibre that can be recycled; and we hear from Polartec how its partially bio-derived nylon product is gaining traction in the cycling and outdoor sectors.

We examine some of the big brands’ sustainability targets and consider how their elite shoes fit into their ethos, while Equip’s Debbie Read tells us about the expansion of Rab’s down recycling programme.

This issue closes with an eye-opening Dialogue from Emma P. (Mason) Zwiebler, the acting CEO of the World Federation of the Sporting Goods Industry. She has referred to inactivity as ‘human’ climate change because of the seriousness of the long-term consequences for people’s health.

14/12/2023

Outsole manufacturer Vibram has become the first footwear brand and sole supplier to join Swiss testing body Bluesign’s 800-strong network of system partners.

This initial pair-up was motivated by the need to assemble “a new, rigorous method of analysis and certification [for verifying] the sustainability level of footwear”, the shoe company’s global sustainability director, Marco Guazzoni, tells WSA. It is hoped that their work together could one day lead to the formulation of industry-applicable guidelines, methodologies and standard, the partners shared.

The latest issue of WSA magazine is out now!

Our main technical articles cover speeding up the biodegradation of synthetics, the growing market for remanufactured or upcycled fabrics, and non-fossil as a raw material for fibres .

Elsewhere, we track clothing group MAS’s interest in cellulosic yarn HeiQ AeoniQ, the hidden worth that clothing waste can have, the return to the apparel market of fibre developer ADVANSA, and the strategy behind Coats new footwear division.

The Global Organic Textile Standard tells us about a project with the European Space Agency to map organic cotton fields using satellites, and we celebrate pioneering work that Vibram Group is carrying out to secure, one day, bluesign certification for footwear .

We hope you enjoy the read!

SPONSORED CONTENT Italian company CIFRA presents the first collection of sports and athleisure garments made through the use of SENSIL® Nylon 6.6 obtained from the biogas of organic waste combined with an elastomer derived from corn.

SENSIL® ByNature, produced by the global Nylon 6.6 leader NILIT, is a next-generation Nylon yarn that uses Biomass Balance (BMB) technology by replacing fossil raw materials with renewable ones. Derived from biogas produced from organic waste, this yarn is a first for the fashion and sportswear industry. Compared to conventional Nylon in this new approach renewable resources are used as raw material at the very early stages of the production process, reducing 1400 kg of CO2 equivalent per ton of conventional Nylon 66. Every step of the process is monitored and the entire system is ISCCplus certified.
