The latest issue of Inside Denim is available on our website now! Launching this issue, our new Roundtable feature brings together experts from across the supply chain to give their views on the big topics. First up: stretch fibres.

Consultant Malin Ekengren is our Guest Comment: what impacts will new fashions have on fabrics and washes? How does she view the latest fibre blends and what styles can we expect in our wardrobes in coming seasons?

Suitable for the coarser or more textured denim designs, there are several companies processing agricultural waste into textiles fibres, discovering rich pickings in bananas, as well as pineapple leaves and straw.

Picking up on the progress being made by the Denim Deal companies, we hear how the learnings can potentially be deployed as a global blueprint for recycled cotton content, and we map the progress have made on these blends.

Gap's head of sustainability, Daniel Fibiger, tells us why investing in water-reducing technology is so important for the brand, and Hiut Denim co-founder David Hieatt explains how a fresh funding structure makes sense for the Welsh jeansmaker .

We also compile the most interesting products found on trip to Shanghai, delve into a Transformers Foundation-backed White Paper on , map ’s latest offerings, and follow The Vintage Showroom's Doug Gunn through his working day.

26/03/2024

Italian mill Candiani has worked with Austrian fibre producer Lenzing to recycle geotextiles that have been used to insulate glaciers, and turn them into denim jackets.

Geotextiles, which are used to protect physical features such as soil or stop ice melting, are generally made from synthetic nonwovens, but there is a fear that this allows microplastics to seep into the environment.

A pilot scheme on the Stubai Glacier in Austria tested Lenzing’s fibre in a nonwoven as ice insulation. Following its success, the scheme was widened to all Austrian glaciers used by tourists.
The lifespan of geotextiles is usually around two years, after which the nonwovens are disposed of. However, Lenzing worked with Marchi & Fildi, Candiani Denim and Blue of a Kind to produce the Glacier Jacket.

Candiani received the waste yarn, used it as a weft, and combined it with a cotton warp to weave a white denim fabric. This fabric was then sent to the manufacturer, which transformed it into a garment.
The jacket will be showcased during April at the Candiani Micro-factory in Milan.

Turkish company Baytech, the maker of pumice alternative Hand Made Stone (HMS), has released a new product that will help students and denim enthusiasts customise their jeans.

Working best on unwashed and coarser denim, the HMS Designer Pen works by abrading the fabric, allowing users to add whiskers and fades, artificially speeding up the ageing process and adding character.

A new European directive that bans greenwashing and requires proof of sustainability claims has added impetus to a research project on ozone, said one of the organisers, Dalia Benefatto.

The founder of consultancy Devalia has said companies will now need to prove any claims they make, and the project to map out the potential risks, or otherwise, of using ozone to treat denim fabrics will provide them with data to substantiate their claims.

Inside Denim stopped by Texworld Denim (Feb 5 to 7) in Paris to chat with exhibitors and see the new collections. The show, part of Texworld Evolution Paris, hosted 70 denim exhibitors including Atlas Denim, Foisan Textile and Mekotex.

GrĂŠgory Lamaud, an artistic director of the show, explained why he had selected these denim highlights:

1. Discovery Denim, China: Lightly washed raw denims with a coarser, even brutal, twill. “We liked the contrast between the very classic Japanese kimono-inspired piece, usually in a rather light material, and the more raw denim.”

2. Pioneer Denim, Bangladesh: “The same quality denim throughout the shirt with different washes. Patchwork that highlights the different industrial washing techniques. Hybrid product from very raw to very faded, contrasting the soft fabric with coarse.”

3. NZ Denim, Bangladesh. “Real hand denim, quite thick, very soft, in a slightly jacquard spirit (a little textured). Very washed with dyes in a more natural spirit. We're moving away from raw, we're more into ‘big’ denim.”

As part of our plan to bring news from all the big fabric shows, Sophie is also at PV in Paris today and will report back on the most interesting discoveries.

ARMEDANGELS’ impact and innovation director, Katya Kruk, tells Inside Denim that close collaboration with mill Calik Denim was essential to achieve a denim fabric made from fully recycled cotton: 80% pre-consumer and 20% post-consumer cotton waste.

The German brand is embarking on several initiatives, including a scheme to translate its carbon emissions data into more accessible and easily digestible information for shoppers, in partnership with fashion life-cycle assessment platform Carbonfact. Resulting insights are expected to help shape product development in other categories, beyond jeanswear.

14/12/2023

CleanKore appointed BluWin to validate the comparative savings associated with denim fabric manufacturing and subsequent modified garment washing at laundries using traditional vs CleanKore fabrics. The testing showed incredible savings of: up to 60% water, 57% steam, 47% chemicals, 51% time and 58% greenhouse gas emissions.

Michael Morrell, President/CEO at Freedom Denim Americas, said: “We’re always trying to push the envelope of sustainability, however, never at the cost of impacting the aesthetics. After conducting numerous CleanKore trials and now being in stores at Mens Wearhouse, the quality and look of the garment have never been impacted and in many cases looks better. Now that there’s mathematical data that has been verified to support the savings, it's a great story to share with the industry and we’re excited to play a role in this analysis.”

For sustainable solutions to truly be scalable, they can not negatively impact the cost. Mr Ranjan Mahtani, Chairman, Epic Group and CleanKore partner said, “CleanKore technology offers a fantastic value proposition of significant sustainability benefits to our associates and the environment, without increasing cost.”

Our guest comment is from Sarif Patwary, Ph.D., senior sustainability analyst at Kontoor Brands, who tells us a mindset shift is needed in the industry – a sentiment echoed by Alexander Bock, who gives us the inside track on bluconnection’s new facility in Singapore.

Our Jean Genie, Wojciech Beyger, tells us how an in-depth knowledge of both chemicals and machinery is vital in the laundries – but that he is most proud of the personal connections he has made through work and the trainees he has taught and developed.

With the upcoming Sustainability Talks Istanbul, Halit Gümüşer from Kipas gives us an overview of the innovation that will be presented this year, as well as some of the exciting initiatives the mill has been spearheading.

We hear from Japanese biotechnology firm Spiber Inc. about its progress to blend its ‘brewed’ fibres into denim and take a look at ARMEDANGELS 100% jeans. Jeffrey Thimm explains how organic cotton is being mapped using satellites with the help of the European Space Agency, and Tilmann Wröbel gives us a glimpse of a potential future with a visit to a Kaihara Corporation mill in Japan.
