This year I will be doing a full Christmas music Organ recital - a first for me, as I haven’t really been learning the organ for very long I don’t have the “back catalogue” of music in my rep. Feminine Interpretation… WHAT? This clip was sent to me today from an audience member from St Ia’s @jeffrey_kernow it was from a lady audience member and she made a comment saying “It May seem a strange thing to say… but I got you, I got the way you played, it was feminine it was complex… thank you, I’ve never heard it like that before, but then again I’ve never heard a female play the organ before” It did make me smile a little, not because I’m a female organist particularly but because it opens up the idea of feminine interpretation of works.. is this something you have ever thought about before? We often discuss particular well known Organists interpretation of works maybe Reger on Bach or Mark Rochesters 1991 Gramaphone review of Piet Lee’s Franck recordings etc … there are loads of them, we know this, BUT what does feminine interpretation look like? I don’t believe it is because I’m female specifically, - is it a rewording of the commonly used sensitive description etc? Or is there something else? This was the clip - I was playing a William Herschel Voluntary.
