Always felt this was one of the best covers the original version of WCW Magazine ever did. For the era in which it was published, it was tantamount to a work of art. The wrestler cut outs look tremendous.

It also presented relative WCW newcomer Big Van Vader, as he was still called, as an invincible force.

The cover story was consistent with the outcome of the World title match at The Great American Bash 1992 in which Vader would shockingly defeat and succeed Sting as champion in a bout with an amazingly clean ending.

Uncle Howdy and his disciples showed up at the end of Raw last night and supposedly clobbered or possibly offed Chad Gable and staff at the Gorilla Position.

No expense was spared in this chilling horror film-inspired production that left much of the crowd mesmerised.

Nevertheless, I’m having a hard time working out how this act can mesh with everyone else in WWE without inflicting serious damage upon the regulars, which was a conundrum WWE never managed to crack with Bray Wyatt/The Fiend.

As you might already know, the Power Slam Yearbook 1995 Part One is available from: https://powerslammagazine.com

The second in the Power Slam Yearbook series, the PSY1995P0 includes Issues 7-12 of Power Slam in their entirety, along with a new four-page introduction in which I revisit and ruminate on the decisions and developments and resultant climate in pro wrestling in the January-June 1995 period when Issues 7-12 were first published, and reflect on the features, columns and interviews that first saw the light of day in those six issues of PS. Ernie Santilli also contributes a two-page feature in which he charts his journey from pro wrestling fan to pro wrestling writer, and the creation of the heat-seeking Stately Wayne Manor persona.

The Power Slam Yearbook 1994 is also available, which includes the first six issues of the magazine, originally published between July and December 1994, and a new two-page introduction in which I delve into the thoughts and fears many in and around wrestling had concerning the Vince McMahon steroid trial and Hulk Hogan’s arrival in WCW. It’s hard to believe both occurred nearly 30 years ago.

We have not scrimped on the quality of these Yearbooks: the paper and print quality is topnotch, and the new material is as thought-provoking as anything that was published in PS. I do realise I am marking my own homework here . . .

Check out monster heel Bull’s match against singles up-and-comer Manami Toyota from All Japan Women. Toyota has to work for every bit of offence here against the mighty Bull: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lp4DfRQJjMU

Here are my notes, scrawled on a scabby piece of paper, that I used to make my selections for The 10 Best U.S.-Style All-Rounders article that was published in Issue 226 of Power Slam in 2013.

Ray Stevens and Lou Thesz did not make the list.

I loved the classic photo of Harley Race and The Destroyer. The Jerry Lawler fist-drop pic is a belter as well.

In response to questions from Jon Alba at Fightful about the return to WWE of Vince McMahon a year ago against the unanimous wishes of the Board and the “degree of knowledge of the current accusations against [McMahon]" and how it might affect the company’s relationships with partners, Paul Levesque said: “Look, we just had an amazing week . . . A 10-year, $5 billion Netflix deal, Rock joining our Board. We just sold out the Royal Rumble: put 48,000 people into Tropicana Field. I choose to focus on the positive. And, yes, there’s a negative . . . Erm, but I want to focus on that and just keep it to that.”

Levesque should have had a statement prepared for this line of questioning that would have acknowledged the severity and magnitude of public interest internationally in the accusations against McMahon, without delving into the specifics of what Janel Grant has accused him of. They call it firefighting. Instead, Levesque fled from the interrogation. This was head-in-the-sand stuff. He might as well have said: “I’m choosing to pretend this didn’t happen” or “No comment.”

The kerning process alone on each Power Slam cover took 30-40 minutes.

The spacing between letters needed to be spot-on before any cover left my computer.

Typesetting used to be a well-paid profession, you know.
