πŸ‘‹ Hi! I've resolved to be WAY better at putting my face to my business so it is high time I re-introduced myself.

For anyone who doesn't know me yet, I'm Louise and I'm an experienced digital ads manager specialising in Meta (Facebook and Instagram) and Google. I absolutely LOVE what I do and feel, after a wonderfully squiggly career, I've truly found my calling. Not that I would change a thing in my journey to get here - I've worked in the arts, event management, fundraising and social media and I've gained a unique perspective and amazing experiences from every step of that journey.

πŸ€” The one question I’m asked more than any other by SMEs.

My recommendation often surprises people. Unless you have an extremely limited budget, the answer is usually BOTH. This is how you can take a full-funnel approach to your digital marketing strategy. Even on relatively small budgets, this combination approach can be really powerful.

One of the most common mistakes I come across is to look at Meta, Google - and any other form of digital advertising you are running - as completely separate things that each need their own strategy. This is a fundamental misunderstanding of how people buy. It isn't linear. They often interact with ads in many placements and platforms before they are ready to buy.

Planning your Meta and Google advertising as part of a single strategic plan, taking each stage of your funnel into account, can be really effective. Both bring different things to the table but when you put them together it can be pure magic.

I love running Meta and Google together for clients as it means I can take a full-funnel approach to the decisions I make with them, to help make the most out of their overall digital ads budget.

Cheers to all the Working Mums who survived half term. Especially if you have little ones - well done for making it through! Mine are a lot older now (youngest is 9) and they can be ignored when I need to work but it is still a challenge filled with guilt-filled stresses and strains. And as for those early years - phew! There is a very good reason I waited to set up my business until they were all over 5. It is hard, hard work.

So, if you have just crawled through the week, congratulations. You did it. Only summer to get through next, ladies. 😳

Whether you are looking for leads or selling products, if there are gaps in your customer journey, expect to lose people down them! πŸ•³

One of the most common mistakes businesses make when they start on their digital advertising journey is not taking the whole customer journey into account - and then blaming the ads when they don't get the results they've expected.

It's taken me an age to get around to posting this but thought it was time to share that I've officially graduated from the Kaity Griffin Profitable Promotion Google Ads Course and am now a signed-up member of Kaity's awesome Mastermind group. 🀩

I absolutely loved this course and can't recommend it highly enough. I'm really enjoying branching out into Google Ads and I'm working with an amazing skincare client, getting some great results! πŸ˜ƒ It's a different ballgame to Meta ads but there are lots of similarities and I love being able to offer both services to clients now. Going freelance is a big step. I set up my business in October 2019 then took the plunge and gave up my PAYE job in December. Nice timing, eh?! 😏 Along came lockdowns, turning what was already a lonely journey into one of total isolation, punctuated with home-schooling hideousness. It wasn't easy but I relied on friends who were already freelancing for support and advice.

As time went by, advice from good friends in other industries wasn't enough. After up-skilling in Facebook and Instagram advertising, I joined the Digitial Tribe, an incredible group of experts in my field run by the awesome Emma Van Heusen - it is not only a vital professional network but it has also given me back that feeling of being part of a team.

Being in the Digital Tribe has opened my eyes up to other connections I could forge to make my freelance journey less lonely. I have always shied away from networking, especially locally - who wants to bump into business contacts in the supermarket when you're harassed with kids hanging off you? - but I had some great advice from Tamsin Acheson - Leadership Development & Coaching, the brilliant business coach in the Tribe: be clear on why you are networking. It doesn't have to be in order to get more work. Just reaching out for advice and support from other people in a similar situation is a valid reason. And that really took the pressure off. So I've joined Haywards Heath Business Association and whilst I've not quite made it to booking into one of their meet-ups yet - I feel they have my back already and it is the right next step for me and my little business.

I'm now in my 3rd year of business and each of these steps to make freelancing less lonely has been gradual - partly because of lockdowns but also because feeling comfortable in your own skin as a freelancer takes time. For any new freelancers working out in the void, my advice would be to go at your own pace but to start making connections when you are ready. It's not such a lonely world out there after all. πŸ₯°

I've been busy upskilling and I'm excited to now be able to offer ads management on TikTok, as well as on Facebook and Instagram.

I love learning - I'm a bit of an addict to signing up for courses! - and I've really enjoyed transferring my ads knowledge to a new platform. TikTok isn't the right place for every business to be but if you already have a presence and you are connecting well with your people there, maybe it's time to think about experimenting with some paid posts.

πŸ€” Ever been served an ad on Facebook and Instagram and wondered why on earth you were considered to be in the target audience? Well, that ad was likely an example of poor targeting. That business is wasting its money by serving the ad to the wrong people. Many accounts, big and small, make this mistake regularly.

Meta has so many detailed targeting options and, whilst it's definitely true that broad audiences are working best at the moment, clever use of the targeting options available to you can ensure your ads are seen by the right people, so you aren't wasting your cash.

Stepping out of your comfort zone.

Something we do a lot when we're young but we're far less good at when we're older (especially women who step back their careers to have kids, like me!)

That's why I'm really proud of myself this year. The last few months have been a bit of a whirlwind. New brand, new skills, new clients. Not comfortable in the least. Slightly terrifying at times actually! But SO exciting.

We may not find stepping out of our comfort zone easy as we get older but the fresh enthusiasm it brings is rejuvenating. Comfort zones may be comfortable but they are also a little dull. And life is too short for dull. May we never rest in them for too long.

Approaching Meta ads manager for the first time can be a little daunting. No, actually, let's be honest, it can be really baffling and stressful! It also takes hours to even begin to familiarise yourself with how it works, let alone work out how to get the most out of your Facebook and Instagram ads. That takes literally hundreds of hours.

I've been working my socks off since October, fitting the course around my clients (and kids!) but it has been worth every ounce of time and effort. It's safe to say that decent organic (unpaid) reach for businesses on Facebook is really hard to achieve these days. You probably already know that Facebook and Instagram advertising is a brilliantly targeted tool to get your brand in front of your target audience. But does that mean that you should give up on organic? Throw in the towel and focus purely on ads?

I know how disheartening it is to spend ages perfecting your posts only to check the insights and find they have been seen by a tiny percentage of your followers so I can see why you might think organic social media isn't working for you. But don't give up just yet!

You may not get many organic sales from your posts but social media is all about playing the long game. Potential customers rarely become customers after seeing one post. Social media nurtures them over weeks and months to bring them into the fold - whether that be through ads or organic posts. Facebook is your shop window. You need to keep showing up and updating the products in your window. Otherwise, your potential customer might become someone else's customer. πŸ˜•

Even if you aren't pulling in big numbers of views and clicks, you are showing up and giving yourself the best opportunity of being first in that potential customer's mind. You are building your brand. And if someone looks you up on social, your profile page will look just lovely! Which matters. 😍

Not only that but when you do come to run ads, your organic posts are the seed with which you will build out your audience. Anyone who has interacted with your posts becomes part of your warm audience, from which you can build out lookalike audiences to reach more of your people. These warm in-app audiences are more important than ever these days, in light of recent changes to iOS.

So no, don't ditch organic! They are more important than the number of likes they receive, believe me.

When I set up as a freelancer two and a half years ago, I was pretty scared of being me. Having always worked for others until going it alone, putting my name out there was scary and I opted to hide behind a brand, so I called myself Be Mighty Social Media - and I have to admit, I loved hiding while I got my confidence up.

But I've felt for a while now that it's time to be me. Because I know my stuff, I'm great at what I do and my little business is going from strength to strength. Time to stop hiding!

With Facebook Ads, you really do have the power to make sure that your content is shown to your ideal customer and that your budget is spent only on those who are likely to engage and buy from you!

Facebook targeting is genuinely awesome at finding your people. All you have to do is make sure you're giving it the right information and it will get to work!

Choosing the correct targeting options can be tricky but when you get it right it pays dividends.

But make sure you keep it simple! Facebook loves a broad audience so don't over-complicate things!
